▬ ABOUT US ▬
We are Rich & Kathie, a retired couple building our dream home: A SUPER ENERGY EFFICIENT OFF GRID earth sheltered home in the Adirondacks!
The house will be covered with about 30" of soil which helps to maintain an internal temperature between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit in winter & summer respectively. This means that in the winter we will only need minimal heat that we plan to provide with a small wood burning stove and we shouldn't need any air conditioning in the summer at all!
With inflation right now, the energy efficiency of this house is a HUGE Plus! But, it also means that we have a super tight budget that is getting tighter by the day. For this reason we DIY everything we reasonably can and find creative ways to save money such as repurposing.
Please subscribe and join us to see how we manage the challenges of staying in budget and exactly how energy efficient this house actually is when it is done!
We appreciate all your support :-)

Kathy saved the day with her jigsaw. Woohoo! Making things work for you is homesteading at its finest. It turned out great. Nice teamwork, my friends. Your property and the surrounding area look beautiful with all the snow.

You missed the real excitement, back in the 60s and 70s when I was growing up around there, quite often a military jet of some kind would break the sound barrier. Not near the ground, but the surrounding mountains would echo the boom for a couple seconds. For a boy, very exciting!

Looks fantastic! Love the hidden storage too. For cutting the leftover branches from the loggers, you can build a “crib” to allow you to safely cut many branches in one pass. I’ve read that the smaller branches have a tremendous amount of heat value.

When we lived in WV there were times when the house shook. I kept asking around what was going on. I found out that they were reclaiming an old strip mine not far away and we were feeling the blasts to close some of the open pits.

That’s crazy!!! And since mines are underground I get it was even worse than what we were experiencing!

I always tell people to wash the vent screen often. Place it inside the kitchen sink with hot water mixed with Dawn Ultra Detergent. Overnight soak. Then rinse it off and run it through 2 cycles minimum in dishwasher. Once grease gunk starts to form it builds up fast and hard to remove. Eventually becoming a fire hazard. Best to be proactive and get it off early
