Despite the increase of multiculturalism in western lands Muslims along with other minority communities face many challenges and sometimes even discrimination.
There are also those within the faith that have become isolationist in a pluralistic society and even those who spread hatred and hate-speech towards the other.
How can we go about building diverse religious groups in our communities to create a better more peaceful future and what should be the role of faith institutions and faith leaders in building these bridges.
In this intellectually insightful lecture delivered at Harvard University Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi tackles the subject of 'Religious Freedom and its Implications' addressing the problems of interfaith dialogue in America.
The lecture is followed by an open Q&A session.
Recorded 1st May 2014

the verses the sheikh recited: "" He is Allah , other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. He is Allah , other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. He is Allah , the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.""

SubhanAllah, truly an empowering & inspirational presentation Shaykh, a perfect depiction of the Prophetic method of caring for our community and participating with people of other faiths to create a better society for everyone. Even before the Prophet (saw) became Ar-Rasool (The Messenger) for 40 years he was known amongst his people as Al-Amin (The most-trustworthy) - with his perfect manners and forever smiling face he sincerely cared for his people and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with his pagan society in creating a better world for everyone, whether it be re-building the Kabah with them in pre-Islam Arabia or standing up for the rights of the oppressed in the alliance of Hilf al-Fudhul. Whilst many of our faith leaders preach isolationism and non-integration with other faiths (and some preaching hate), I commend you for reviving the Prophetic character of integrating with the community that you live in and having interfaith dialogues promoting a positive image of Muslims & Islam and starting initiatives like feeding the poor and sheltering the children and women in your community. I am humbly inspired to follow in your footsteps to create a better world for everyone by acting locally but impacting globally, inshaAllah - may Allah guide my path, ameen. Jazak Allahu Khayr for this inspirational talk.

I disagree with him on certain points but great respect for who he is and great admiration for his knowledge, demeanor, and balanced approach. The topic should have been appropriately titled "Abrahamic Religious Freedom" because you know.......there are a billion+ people who practice various factions of Sanathana Dharma a.k.a. Hinduism.......AND there are probably a billion+ who are truly a-religious a.k.a atheists.

We wouldn't have a problem with seperation of church and state if we all abided by Sharia... The problem lies in the fact that in order to keep peace within a nation, state, city... one must allow the non-religious to execute their views into society based on their desires. So in a way if we are to separate church and state then the non-religious groups are to conform to Sharia without exception. That is supposing we establish a new non- contemptible law. For now however, give to ceasar what is ceasar's and to God what is of God. If a politician realizes his campaign might be jeopardized due to his way of life, then it is best to drop out than to go against the will of God. Too bad we don't all believe in the same system... if we did we would most definitely be more productive. Yet we spend more time trying to figure out right from wrong and trying to keel peace among each other that we lose focus on the real matters of life.

@M Amini you obviously come from a particular persuasion (probs Sufi) so you have to scrap the barrel to try to still put the brother down despite his great work, maybe you should read his credentials and that of ibn tayymiaya as well his piety listen to what shaykh hamza says about ibn tayymiaya so let us layman not get involved in insulting the pious and scholars ... And let's all get on I am not salami or Sufi but le me tell you people like you would much rather call person who insults the sahabi or a non Muslim the to sit with someone you consider a wahabi. We all need to put our petty differences a side and become brothers and sisters then we can be a strong ummah and focus on giving this beautiful message of Islam to our fellow humans on the this planet. That is what we will be questioned on the Day of Judgement not is you were a Sufi or salami but what you did!

He isn't singing a song... he is reciting verses from the Quran, in the manner it is pronounced. Idk where your getting your facts from but it seems like you don't know much about Islam and only listen to what the media is telling you. The top half is what he recited and the bottom half is the translation. Remember, "Allah" means god in arabic and is also used by the christian arabs to refer to the most high. What he recited seems relevant and befitting for an interfaith panel. If you think the translation is made up, i urge you to go pick up any Quran from anywhere and take a look for yourself before you speak so arrogantly. Surah 59, Verse: 22-24 Bismillaah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem Hu wallahu ladhila illaha illa hu alim al ghaib wa shahadati Hu ar rahman ar rahim Huwallahu ladhila illaha illa hu al malik ul quddus as salaam ul mutmin ul muhaiymin al aziz ul jabbar ut mutakabbir Subhanallah hi amma yusrikun Hu wallahu al khaliq ul bari ul mussawir La hul asma ul husna yusabuhu lahuma fi semaawaati wal ard wa huwal aziz al hakim In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful Allah is He, other than Whom there is no other god; Who knows both what is hidden and what can be witnessed; He is the Most Compassionate and Merciful. Allah is He, other than Whom there is no other god; the Sovereign, the One, the Source of Peace, the Guardian of Faith, the Preserver of Security, the Exalted, the Compelling, the Supreme. Glory be to God, beyond any associations. He is Allah, the Creator, the Evolver, the Bestower of Form. To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names: Whatever exists in heaven and earth declares His Praise and Glory. And He is Exalted in Power, the Wise.

sandra hmiel As far as I understood your question, its important to understand that a translation of the Quran is in tern an interpretation of its meanings and so in Islamic cosmology, a translation not even regarded as Quran by definition. The point is that the linguistic depth of the Quran cannot be exhausted, due to the nature of language itself as well as the depth of knowledge that cant be explained by a simple translation, but must be accomodated with commentary. However, the translation must be such that its not entirely literal, but conveys something of that meaning across. A good book to explain the basics of Islam is "Vision of Islam by Sachiko Murata and William Chiddick"
