Religions and babies - Hans Rosling

Hans Rosling had a question: Do some religions have a higher birth rate than others -- and how does this affect global population growth? Speaking at the TEDxSummit in Doha, Qatar, he graphs data over time and across religions. With his trademark humor and sharp insight, Hans reaches a surprising conclusion on world fertility rates.

Whats great about this is it takes religion out of the discussion and makes it easier to look at it as a worldwide problem not an Islamic or Christian problem

He makes good and factual points, but we have to remember he's saying that we'll hit a 10 billion ceiling only if poverty is resolved and women's education/ access to family planning is increased + he says he leaves out increases to life expectancy. The first two factors are ever slow going and life expectancy is growing abeit slowly as well.

They can laugh all they want but religion and sexuality don't necessarily have to be in conflict.

The change of population proportion of different religions in the same country has been ignored. One whole country has been assumed to have a single religion which has led to generalization and hence the conclusion that religions and babies are not correlated.

My one criticism is that this video didn't take into account secularisation (not that I blame it because it is somewhat difficult to measure). If what you're discussing is the societal impact of religion, then many Western European countries are, in effect, over 50% non-religious. For example, in the UK a The Tearfund Survey in 2007 found that only 7% of the population considered themselves as practising Christians. 10% attend church weekly and two-thirds had not gone to church in the past year. And the UK is far from the most secular country in Europe.
