Relaxing Wood Turning Video!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Satisfying Relaxing Woodturning Video!
In this video I will be woodturning a piece of Ovangkol, which is in the Rosewood family! It is a lovely wood to turn and it finishes really nicely! I used Yorkshire Grit to help with the sanding process.. then I applied a Carnauba Wax finish. It has left a very nice sheen, and it glistens in the light! The lathe I was using was the Record Power Coronet Herald, with the SC3 chuck. I used the remounting jaws on the chuck at the end to turn away the tenon.

Beautiful bowl, nice video. I love the grain of the Ovangkol and the shape of the bowl, too. Yesterday I turned my very first wooden bowl (yay). I used some cherry and beeswax to finish (the carnauba wax did not arrive yet). It did't really give it a shine though. So next time carnauba wax it is. :-D Thank you for uploading these videos, you are a huge inspiration! Regards, Paul

Thanks Paul... comments like this, is the reason I want to keep uploading haha! I thrilled you get something out of them! I would like to try a bees wax finish. because a lot of people say it's good. it probably depends on the wood your turning? I hope the carnauba wax turns out well! let me know how it goes!

Beautiful grain in the wood and a nicely turned bowl. Do not use the indexing lock for locking the spindle, to change a chuck, faceplate or in time you break it.

I once had an Ovengkol blank and wasn't able to hollow it out as it was rock hard. In the end I broke the epoxy rim for pushing too hard. Seems as if the RP tool aren't that bad.

Sean, I absolutely hate to be negative but your technique concerns me. When using a scrapper the rear of the handle must always be elevated. Also, The scrapper must always be used slightly above center or right at center, never below. Furthermore, you're using a spindle gouge on the inside and outside of the bowl and that is usually not a good idea. They're designed to cut side grain and not end grain. Remember in a bowl you're cutting both. You need to use a deep fluted bowl gouge for safer cutting options when transiting from side to end grain. Keep turning and making beautiful things.

Hi Ronald, Thank you for your advice. This video was for Record Power. And I only wanted to used the tools they sent me. (I didn't have a bowl gouge from them). Since showing them the video... they have kindly sent me one of their bowl gouges, for the videos. Thanks or scraper help! I'm always keen on learning more things! see you in the next video!

I didn’t find it relaxing you used the wrong tools to do the job and you didn’t use them correctly, you were lucky not to get a catch and yes it was a nice piece of wood but why did you turn the foot away when you sit it on the table it will look like part of the table. You need to leave a foot on your bowl it doesn’t have to be very big and will lift the bowl so that you can see the whole shape. Please give it a go and you will see that I’m right I’ve been doing this for many years and do teach wood turning, but on a plus side a very good effort I hope this doesn’t put you off we’ve all been there and keep making shavings.
