Relax Is The One Word To Heal Chronic Pain- TMS- Dr. Sarno

If I could choose one word to describe what it takes to heal from chronic pain, it would be to relax. This word encompasses both the mind and the body. When we relax, we turn on the healing state in the brain and nervous system, as well as in the body. Learning how to relax in the face of pain is the answer to chronic pain.

    Man, you save my life. I had a relapse from TMS, and needed a Magic Burton to be healed again. I was trying to find my represse fellings, shifting my attention, and nothing seemed to work, until i Saw this vídeo. Forcing relaxation is the cure to chronic pain. You are an angel

    Yes, without relaxing we don’t activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the primary system for healing

    Thats so true. Chonic pain is just a manifestation of Extreme anxiety and fear. To relax One have to shift their attention from anxiety and fear of pain. Fear of pain generates more pain and anxiety.

    This is an extremely important and well explained video. The pain is stressful so the last thing you feel like doing is relaxing, because it feels impossible, but you need to lie down, chill, breathe and face the pain head on. Observe the pain instead of resisting the pain, which is just adding more stress! Observe it by putting your attention there, feel it, stay with it, it won’t be comfortable but the point is, the longer you stay with it, the more comfortable you get, the more it heals, and eventually, like every sensation, passes. This is the path!

    @@thepainpt I just got it yesterday, finally, after reading all the books, and trying to understand this for months in constant pain and total desperation. It’s my second day without opioids and I’m observing the sensation constantly and remaining as equanimous as I can and I know it’s going to pass! Very exciting! Thanks for all your work helping others with this!!

    Mindfulness/awareness/present moment awareness is extremely important in chronic pain. Otherwise it can create major psychological damage as the ego creates so much resistance in each moment. The chronic pain is a strong spiritual teacher or like a personal trainer for our awareness practice. Relaxing into the pain is a form of surrender in the moment

    Thank you! Relaxing...hmm that makes sense. I'm so tired of trying to do various stretches, yoga poses and exercises to little lasting benefit, when what I want to do most is corpse pose and totally relax...

    It’s like asmr and healing from pain all in one. This channel is stellar. I’m so grateful to have found you as you are aligned with my whole process. It’s so cool that a physical therapist chose to go the alternative way and look at things from more of a metaphysical thing rather than just physical. You seem to genuinely care about your clients vs just handing out flash cards of exercises to keep them hooked. Ive gone to so many PT’s and most of them just wanted the business. So thankyou for existing.

    Thanks so much, but do you mean that we need to avoid doing things that aggravate the pain in 1st place or we should avoid correcting the pain by all the therapy, because if the goal is to forget the pain then both the things would make us keep reminding that pain is present..?

    World is one family yes absolutely anything that triggers the fight or flight response. It could be a real thing or something imaginary like a movie. It’s all the same to the brain.

    We should not call TMS chonic pain, it should be called chronic anxiety. It scared a lot to think you suffer from chronic pain, whicj is bad for recovering. I healed from extreme chronic pain, once i realize it is just a manifestation of anxiety. Burning sensacions all Over my body, all this due to TMS from anxiety

    If you have ruled out any medical explanation for it then you have to not worry about it anymore Or be afraid of it or concerned but it. It’s likely a stress danger response from the brain that you are trying to break down to indicate that is no longer a threat or danger to you

    I have a question: I’ve had leg pain (deep aching) since I was about 3, and I have had it periodically throughout my life, and now I get it almost every day, but at different times. Sometimes I don’t have it. I also am plagued with a horrible spine (bulging and herniated discs, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, degeneration, etc.), a plethora of autoimmune illnesses, toxin sensitivity, and have had mold poisoning, among other things. At the end of the day, or after working and being on my feet, my lower back is on fire and I can’t walk. I’m now 65, and am trying desperately to rid my body of this almost constant pain. It comes and goes, but it has affected every aspect of my life. How do I relax into this when I don’t know when it’s coming on? Why do I still have “growing pains” at age 65, when I’m only 4’ 9”, and 105 lbs.? Thank you. Ps. I’m under-treated for pain because of this ridiculous “opioid crisis” that scared doctors into cutting back and being on guard about what they prescribe. Everyone wants to do injections, which I can’t take because the steroids make me crazy, and they don’t help. They also want to do surgery, which won’t help either. I’m stuck.

    Hi there: Sounds like there is a lot happening and the symptoms, especially the leg pain is really long lasting- since age 3! Since it's been 62 years since the pain started, there's no way it could be structural as the tissues heal. Likely to be ingrained brain and nervous system pain. And the other sensitivities give clues to that as well. So...#1 Stop being afraid of any of these symptoms they are no dangerous, even if they feel that way. #2 Learn to openly feel and relax into them- check out my somatic tracking videos and practice that each day. #3- read more about TMS-DR.Sarno. Dr. Schubiner books- need to get the brain off believing you are damaged or broken. #4 may be see a TMS trained practitioner or MD for a diagnosis of TMS- I work with many people or go to ppdassociation.org/directory-disclaimer Good luck!!!!

    Healing Chronic Pain- The Pain PT Thank you. My doctor says the leg pain is caused by a structural problem with my spine that is curved the wrong way. Not sure what that means. My question is: why would a 3 year-old have pain that was so severe, it woke me up at nights for years? It continued into my teens, mostly when I didn’t get enough sleep. How could that be ingrained when it doesn’t occur every day and starts randomly? I do meditation every day to out any negative feelings and working with it, physical therapy, specialty chiropractic, yet it persists. I think my lower back pain has something to do with a past life where I dreamed I was in a field war and I was cut in half with a saber. I haven’t told you everything, but I also became very ill with breast implants for 15 years, and they messed up every system in my body, causing a many autoimmune illnesses, infection after infection, etc. I just am skeptical because of what I’ve tried so far. No reflection on you! I’m planning to go to a therapist and a spiritual teacher, but I’m not ruling this method out. When I meditate to rid myself of past problems and ancestral issues, sometimes I cry. I never realized how much resentment I have toward the medical system for the lies, the ignorance, etc. Much respect!

    @@Tinyteacher1111 Yes there may lots to unwind in the brain, nervous system, and body. It starts with a belief that what you are feeling is ok. That you are safe. From that mental perspective you can let the body and nervous system naturally unwind this tension in the body- which for you has been stored in there for years!     @@mindovermovement6401 Hi, I’m back! Thank you for giving me some insight. I write the longest, dang comments! I’m sorry! I did have Scarlet Fever when I was 6 weeks old. From what I’ve learned, that turns into a rheumatoid factor. I’m wondering if the stealth infection streptococcus is to blame for my chronic step throat issues that I had at least 3 or 4 times a year. .I don’t think I was ever feeling great while I grew up. I always had a “tire of pain” around my torso. (Could have been the mattress! ) I also wonder what made me so tiny? When I turned 18, I thought, “OMG! This is as tall as I’ll get!” and started to cry. Then I figured at least I have all my body parts, even if they are small! Lol! My sisters are small, but I’m the runt of the litter. As for the leg thing… it went away while I was raising my kids but came back after a hospital contracted bacterial infection in my chest wall. I had to report it to the city, the hospital, and the CDC. It was pseudomonas aerigunosa, even though I was on two antibiotics. But, get this, my leg pain hasn’t been bad lately at all! Just my lower back, for which I would love to find a chiropractor around my new house with a traction table that pulls you apart! It’s the only time I ever got relief! I forgot I had written this until I saw the comments. I’m going to check into these things. I would LOVE to find a past life regression therapist! This is strange, and probably beside the point, but when I was little, I had a dream that I was lying on a table, and some beings with no faves were hovering over me saying, “Convert.!, Convert!”. It was so vivid, but I was so young, I had to ask my mom what convert meant! I hope I converted to something good! Thanks for listening, and I am going to check this stuff out! My son is living with me right now and has for over a year because he tried to commit suicide by slicing his arms. When he got out of the hospital, since I’m retired, but was on disability after having to retire from my teaching career due to health issues, he came here for me to “babysit”. I noticed he was really strange and couldn’t think. He has had a lot of brain traumas, and was having neurological and psychological issues. It scared me to death! I realized he had mold toxicity from his dad’s house. He’s still sick here, but I think God gave me all these things so I could recognize them in him!

    Smile More Live More would have to look at your whole history to put the pieces together. There are lots of people walking around with disc protrusions but no pain. So would depend on a good biopsychosocial assessment

    @@bernynavidad889 yes dear brother. It's great that our lives crossed paths here and we could exchange some good wishes with each other. I'm slightly aware of tms wiki but will surely be exploring more now. Thanks for your kind suggestion. I also did one meditation course by an organisation called art of living. It was a silence course wherein we go deep in meditation and are in silence for three days. You can check out Google if that's available in your location. For me personally it really helped to make me more calm and relaxed and allowed me to be okay inspite of the pain. And i think that's when the healing (both physical and psychological) begins. They also taught one breathing exercise during the basic course which also I felt to be deeply relaxing. Also listening to guided meditations for relaxation or yoga nidra helps tremendously. I also feel that chanting also effects me possitivly ( Krishna Das - he's an American and his voice has the power to deeply touch hearts of most listener's.) You can try chanting too. The pain sort of melts away when I'm chanting or meditating. Maybe the pain is a blessing in disguise! Really thankful to you for your encouragement and well wishes. It's sort of a guided relaxation to be done lying down. My experience with dealing with fight or flight has been a bit inconsistent but I surely get glimpses of deep internal peace Sometimes by doing the relaxation techniques and listening to spiritual knowledge I have been able to experience absolute stillness of the mind, but as soon as I try to cling on to it, it fades away. But this seven minutes audio has been my anchor really. Whenever I feel lost, I listen to it and get off my fight or flight response. I really hope it helps you somewhat. Listening to spiritual knowledge has also given me mind blowing results. I was 110 kilograms and now I'm 75 kilograms because of the contentment I felt with spirituality led me to leave my dependence of happiness from food and over indulgence. But I'm struggling to keep that feeling intact, more often than not I slip again to my over indulgence patterns and agrevate my pain. I somehow feel it's all connected, maybe I'm being foolish in believing so but letting go makes me so light and pain-free.. Don't worry at all about three days silence, it will be the most beautiful thing ever experienced. Anyways in the basic course only the breathing technique is taught, it's in the advance course wherein we have to be in silence.     You keep saying relax the areas with pain, yet dr. Sarno says the complete opposite when he says fight through your pain and do all your usual activities that may have even caused the pain.

    Thanks Basil for commenting. Yes agree do everything and all usual activities and work though it. When we stop worrying about the pain and trying to fix it, we automatically relax the mind and body. Can't tell you how many people go on vacation and feel better, then come home and pain comes back.

    @@dr.premlatadangi3676 try Unlearn Your Pain, books from Sarno are great bc he really pioneered all of this & coined TMS but some info is a little outdated, books from Dr. Stracks, Curable app is great, Dan Buglio on youtube, Nicole Sachs podcast & she also has a book. Alan Gordon has a great podcast "Tell Me About Your Pain". Fantastic interviews with experts in TMS on "Like Mind Like Body", associated with Curable. Dr. Dan Ratner is really good too,here on KZread. They all are TMS specialists & great resources. Also there is a great TMS wiki by Alan Gordon & a ppd website for professionals. Good luck!
