Summary
In this conversation, Benjamin Griffin and Rabbi Joe Charnes discuss the importance of deep scripture study and interfaith dialogue. Rabbi Joe finds meaning in the Book of Mormon and the New Testament. They emphasize the need to savor and truly understand the words of scripture. They also discuss the concept of beholding, which signifies paying attention to something significant. They explore the idea that the land having no obstructions to preach is a metaphor for breaking down the barriers around our hearts that prevent us from truly internalizing and living the teachings of scripture.

I have read the Book of Mormon every day for over 38 years only missing 65 days. I’ve probably spent more time in Alma chapter 30 than any other chapter as it’s been incredibly insightful for our day and instructive regarding not only what our adversary teaches but how to counteract those teachings. I truly appreciate Rabbi Joe’s insight into this today. After all these years, I can still learn something from someone who sees it from another perspective. Thank you!

We were Kosher until 6 years ago. At some point earlier, I don’t remember the year. I started to trust in Jesus’ redemption. But, no church I visited taught doctrine close to what I knew to be true. Until I started going to the LDS church. I still feel like they might be downgrading some parts and even if we don’t follow every Law, knowing them to judge morality by is a good idea. But based on doctrine, it is the Most True Church I have attended. I became a member in February. This church is so important to me I can’t imagine not being part of it.

It was instructive to observe Rabbi Joe provide an example of respecting the beliefs of others by respectfully addressing The Book of Mormon text, which is not a text of his own religious tradition. This is a first order example. And besides, it was good instruction too. Thank you Rabbi Joe!

Thank you Rabbi Joe it is always a great pleasure to listen to you and to know the depth of your light on the Scriptures. And your approach to the Book of Mormon is enriching. I teach World Religions and the Gospel of Jesus Christ in my institute class here in France and I will be so happy if you can intervene when I teach about The Jewish religion. So listening will enrich my class by sharing your interventions with my students. Thank you for your wisdom, your humility and your respect for our religion and faith in Jesus Christ.

Two verses from the New Testament came in mind, when I was listening to you, and I want to share them: "If you love Me (Christ) feed My lambs and shepherd My sheep! (John 21:15-16) also "Ye that gathereth not with Me (Christ) scattereth abroad". (Matthew 12:30) ~ I think that if we act on these two verses, it will make us better people. Love one another, be kind and patient, and be gatherers with Christ. Thank you so much for your insights Rabbi Joe!

This lesson was a gift. Toda raba Rabbi Joe. I'm not sure I shared this before, but the last few years I've been praying to God to open a way for me to find a rabbi to study Torah with. I've felt a strong prompting to deepen my understanding of the Gospel through Hebrew eyes. Everything I've learnt to date of Judaic thought has been nothing short of enriching. It dawned on me after watching your video last week, that I didn't need to go to synagogue to find a rabbi any longer - God has brought a rabbi to me! To us! And a rabbi who is willing to study our scripture with us! Now that is truly something remarkable and a very wonderful blessing that I do not take lightly. Bless the Lord, for His loving kindness, for bringing us all together in this forum. May G!d bless you too rabbi Joe, for your love-filled service. Shalom 🕊️

The story of Korihor has haunted me and challenged me for years. Recently I realized that what is so bad about him isn't so much his arguments but the *attitude* behind them. So, Korihor as an attitude: this is very useful. Antagonism, or, in other words, "the spirit of contention."

It is interesting that Korihor lays out Social Darwinism, and Alma debunks it on religious grounds. Yet Social Darwinism wasn't something being dealt with im Joseph Smith Jr.'s day. The Book Of Mormon was Copyrighted and published before Charles Darwin ever set foot on the H.M.S. Beagle to start his journey of discovery that would lead to his books Origin Of A Species 1857 and The Descent Of Man 1871, that would eventually lead to Social Darwinism in the late 1880s to early 1890s, which has been a major problem in our day and age ever since. Now if Joseph Smith Jr.'s made up the whole thing using sources around him, why and how did Joseph Smith Jr. include a theory created decades after his death, that was completely unknown in his time? Two possible explanations, either he had help from someone from the future and likely others from the past, meaning everything he wrote is true, or he had help from the one who knows the end from the beginning, namely God the Father, meaning everything he wrote is true.

Wow! He said there were 8 powerful themes he identified in Alma 30-31....and we only got into ONE of them! How much are we missing as listeners by moving through the Book of Mormon, perhaps, too quickly? I know time is precious, but I (for one) would have been riveted if this video had gone on for 60-90 minutes.
