Reinstalling the Transmission and Working on Shifting | Farmall 856 Restoration Episode 8
It's time to mate the transmission back up to the rear end of the tractor, and finish the gears and seals in the front of the bell housing. Afterwards, I install new detent plates in the transmission covers to help tighten up the shifting.

As my dad used to say, "No need to start a job, unless you're going to do it right." Your attention to detail is remarkable. Thanks Pete!

And to instruct us, the viewers, on how the various parts interact and their function. It's one thing to do something. It's another to explain it well enough so that others see the logic and function of those assemblies being restored/repaired.
Your a natural educator . Wonderful to watch you make it right . I love your farm videos but this restoration is amazing . Thank you Pete for taking us along .God Bless

My neighbor is an aviation repair instructor. He says half the class is playing with their phones and wonder why they got a poor grade. That concerns me. It's airplanes.
Between you and your Pop, no restoration roadblock stands a chance! Dynamic Duo!
Pete - Kudos to your dad for his work to restore the shifting fork! Your dad has a lot to teach all of us.

Pete's dad did a great job on the shifter fork repair. The welding and finish machining looked great.
Thanks Pete. This was very, very, interesting! I'm amazed at the engineering that went into designing this, at that time in in our history. To me it's remarkable!!
I am really enjoying this restoration series. I marvel at the intricacies of this tractor.
Good afternoon, Pete. You amaze me by having all your parts in order- My father would be proud of me watching your restoration, Farmall 856, instead of the "crap" on TV
I am impressed with the massive size of that tractor. The 856 is well made.
🥓🍳☕️ & watching Pete put the puzzle back together 😎
I was just going to say, you can cut that rubber band off. If someone's as good at the mechanical part of restoring a tractor and you want to put that much into you might as well. You'll end up with a highly sought after tractor when you're finished especially if people know the tractor. You'll be able to enjoy that tractor for many years to come plus the satisfaction of knowing what you've got. You've already came a long way with that tractor. The right guy got that tractor.
I'm gonna pass out when you first operate this dream machine.

Really enjoy your great attitude and methodology to working in this 856. Thank for sharing this experience with us
I really enjoy just how amazing you are at ease doing this stuff! You have my attention throughout these videos! Can’t wait till it all is new and shiny! Love the videos doing this and all the farm stuff! Have a great week!
Once again you have made winter so much more enjoyable spending time with your rebuilding. Although it’s just for a short period of time , it’s been interesting and fun . Your patience with and funny comments with difficult bolts , gears has taught me to be more patient with things on our small ranch . Thank you so much , you’re the best !
I did enjoy the video Pete. I'm subscribed to a couple hundred channels and yours is in the top 5 or 6 so THANK YOU Pete! May God bless you and your family. 👍
I wish i had the ability to tear apart a tractor and put it back together without having parts left over 😂

Pete, I think you NOW have enough blue thread lock for the next YEAR1! That’s the biggest bottle I’ve ever seen… 😂😂😂
I'm glad to see there's some people out there to steal. Want to do the job, right? Thank you, Pete
I was concerned about leaving the rubber band around the bearings, but that took care of itself. Now I am less anxious. About that.

Glad to see you added some new tools to help save your back.
Thank you Pete for another great video. A young man could learn so much from you if he would volunteer his time just to work with you. When I was young I would volunteer my time and help Older people and learn from them. They have a vast amount Knowledge.
Your Father's ability to redo a part is so helpful and you know it is right. Amazing video Pete! Really enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing and all your efforts.😊
A tractor is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna have to do more of. Lol. Love your videos Pete!
Good morning Pete. Gonna be a great day !!!!!👍
Another great morning watching your "new" tractor heading towards the finish line.
I like how Pete talks to the parts he's fitting together. It kind of makes sense to me.
My anticipation is heighten, as we're getting closer to the final stages. i like the use of the rubber band to hold the pin bearings, such a useful tip. i can not wait to hear her purr. Pete this 856 is going to love you back in bunches.
Always a pleasure to watch you work. You do things precisely how I would if I had your skills. Every installment is outstanding -- among the best instructional videos on You Tube!
I'm still amazed that you remember what pieces go where when you put these back together. And then it all works!
When you are finished, you will have a great tractor and your viewers will have the education and entertainment for long to come. Thanks. Have a great day!
Always a pleasure, Pete. I'll bet the old gent you bought it from would enjoy climbing aboard to see/feel the difference you're making to his ol' pride and joy.
Love the old tractors. Especially farmalls I love my cub
I am NEVER disappointed when I stop by here during your restoration projects.
Thanks Dads Machine Shop!
first time commenter..i make my tractors look new and let a local mechanic do the nuts and bolts repairs.. to each his own level of ability.. you are very interesting to view.. thanks for another enjoyable video..at least you didn`t draw blood on this one..
What l like about your tractor restorations is you get them working like new and then you work with them. No trailer queens on your farm. 👍
You can also use rubber bands for needle bearings for transfer cases as well if you or anyone you know is going to be working on one !
We haven't seen your dad in ages. And how are the piggers doing?
Your theory on restorations is right inline with mine!!! You're so soothing to watch and listen to and the machinery is the right color!!
It's amazing the engineering on these old tractors. Done with sliderules not computers. Thanks Pete! Keep Smilin!!!!
It's so great you still have your dad.!!❤ Hope he's around for many more years.
I realize why I enjoy watching you work and put the parts back together; it’s your demeanor. You are calm, not frustrated because you really seem to want to know & find the solution to a problem. You would be a fantastic instructor! Thanks
Good morning Pete great video I like the part where you had your father repair that part for your tractor. I’m going to work with my grandson when I do my Ford to end in the spring and I’m gonna be passing a lot of my knowledge I hope to him so not only is he going to get the tractor but he’ll get some of the knowledge I have and hope he help because hell, I’m 80 years old. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be around but I want him to learn as much she can while I’m still here. Thanks again.
Pete, Awesome as always..... Aloha...................
@6:56.."the click of my internal torque wrench".... HAHAHA!! sounds like your internal Torque wrench could use some lubricant!!😂

That internal torque wrench works great, or you could use the German torque wrench that says “That’s goodeneuf”. For me though I just stop whenever I hear gas flowing through a very small diameter orifice. I think it is air escaping from the threads of the bolt.
It amazes me how the replacement parts for the old tractors are available. Could you share with us what some of these parts cost? It would be interesting. Thank you

Pete, You rock man. My wife and I enjoy you so much. It was great meeting you at the show last year.
Great video, Pete. Making progress. 👍👍👍👍
It's always great watching you install new parts and how well it all fits together. Nice job Pete and thanks
Nice editing, Pete. Thanks for sharing. -EZ
Great video on how to inspect parts and being thorough. Show that every little bit of slop adds up to big issues.
👍a load leveler is a great investment. Saves time and energy. The short chains with hooks are handy for other purposes also.
Pete, I have to admit to a little "hero" worship. I wish I had the knowledge and talent that you have to do the things you do!
Very nice job and no one rushing you!!
Tractors coming along real good what a great video😊😊😊
Thanks Pete 🙂. Got to spend another enjoyable morning drinking coffee with you. 22 degrees here this morning. Good time spent inside.
Very nice Pete - if you keep doing tractor rebuild videos you're going to need a new building to store them all in!
Great video again💪💪💪
Thanks Pete. With your tutelage I believe I have finally mastered using a Ball-peen hammer. On what exactly is another discussion according to my wife.
I had an Uncle who service AC tractors and others for 45 yrs. That transmission you just finished is complicated beyond my memory skills.
Hey Pete I appreciate every second of your videos thank you for everything you do!
Great work Pete
Kid's clothes rags are always around the shop reminding you of ten years ago.
Impressive levels of specific information and knowledge my friend, love ur show, it's like a constant seminar for me and my machines, thank you bro
Another great job Pete you amaze me at the intelligence of your work
Thank you for another shop class...
I have really enjoyed watching you rebuilding the tractor. I have never been a guy who enjoyed mechanic work, but admired folks like you who have the love and ability doing this rebuilds. Just this morning I took my brother to pick up his dump truck and met the mechanic who does his repairs. Miles is a heavy equipment Mechanic and I asked him what piece of he enjoyed working on the most. Miles said he enjoyed working on Caterpiller D10’S. I guess every mechanic has his favorite machine or brand of machine he likes to work on. Growing up on a dairy farm we had a International Farmall H and a Ford 8N, now you know how old I might be. I can’t wait to see you finish the rebuild and see the tractor running like a kitty full of cream. I love ever minute watching you work!
I admire the way you work Pete. Great job explaining everything.
Good morning Pete!
I like the idea of new gauges that look original, but there are lots of them out there that are cheap Chinese knock offs that don't always work well or for long.. That is where some tractor forums can be good help, by reading comments of people who have been down that road.

I’m Always excited to hear what you have to say about the farm. I hope to hear that the cows in the calfs coming soon with along with the pigs.

Thanks for the great video Pete.
Great video as always and good morning!
Good day to all.
Enjoyed your video Pete have a great day.
You have to remember to apply the factor of age with the double wrench torque wrench internal gauge. Younger = over tight, older = under tight. Just something I am experiencing with age.
I knew you weren't going to leave that rubber band. lol. Always good content!!
You're a most enjoyable teacher and sharer of all that you've learned or picked up along the way.
We enjoyed it to no end. The muffler dad joke worked today on city folk..... A++ Thanks Pete.
