I find it so interesting that not only so many kids are into Aretha and soul music these days, but they are fantastic at singing it.

Yes, although this was not an Aretha sing (although she might have also sung it). It was originally sung and made famous by Leslie Gore in 1963.

... considering many forms of old song tended to speak of deep emotiokns, love deeper than skin, pain and loneliness, raw human feelings. It makes some sense that these would happen. I have observed with some heartbreak many youngling carry intense pain loneliness and hurt deep inside. From lgbt kids to just straight kids struggling to confirm to many different standards and ideals driving them mad with grief and the pain of insecurities and yes even trauma. 8 month's after my father unalived himself. My sisters Male BFF. dissapeared from his home found days later. He Unalived himself by hanging. Talking to his mom many years later. His twin brother somehow survived the grief even though he struggled. His other siblings made their life somewhere else with partners they needed to leave the pain of home. Her husband and her separated cuz the pain was too much and mother had clinically unstable. It Destroyed his home...

I’m sure he already is. This show is completely set up, with the contestants found by producers. They’re not just off the street. Other former “contestants” have made videos on here about it.

my mom was a professional singer, and I am a fairly ruthless critic, I can hear a little bit of pItchiness from his nervousness but other than that totally 10/10.

Putting aside the fact that these shows are semi-scripted dramas, full of ups and downs, suspense, triumphs and tragedies to get us to tune in, Reid deserves some sort of special recognition from all of us, which he got from Howie. For a 14-year old to choose that song, among the thousands of choices he had for his first audition on this program, takes guts. It was written for a 17-year old, Lesley Gore, who specialized in emoting teenage angst, and I remember listening to it on WABC, WMCA in New York. I sang a parody of it around the house, most of which I'll spare you: "You don't own me. You own my cousin Murgatroyd but you don't own me..." For Reid to pull off the performance, not as "good for a 14-year old" but as well as a professional who has been singing the song for twenty years, perfecting the phrasing, the emotional catches in the delivery, the little embellishments and to do it on pitch was astounding. And, of course, in true Susan Boyle style, they have him dressed in a floppy sweater with all the style of a flannel pajama top. Despite that, it was so well done.

The "You Don't Own Me" arrangement that Reid sang wasn't original or just randomly chosen. It's the arrangement that Kyla Jade sang on The Voice 4 years ago (you can find it on KZread). Nearly identical except for the ending because Reid only had 3 minutes and had to shorten it. Since Reid's brother Kiley Tate Wilson (15 years old) was a contestant on The Voice a year or two ago, I'm pretty sure that they had studied all the past The Voice performances and chose this one that was suited for Reid's voice. Don't get me wrong, I thought that Reid's performance was absolutely stunning. I'm just giving credit where credit is due. This situation reminds me of when Adam Lambert sang "Ring Of Fire" on Country Music night on American Idol several years ago. His arrangement was adapted to the Phrygian scale that gave it the very unusual middle eastern sounds with sitars. Many people praised Adam for his unusual arrangement... and Simon Cowell - who really is music illiterate - panned Adam's performance and said the arrangement was "self-indulgent rubbish". BUT what nobody said either in his defense or his praise, I immediately recognized that this was the arrangement that Dilana sang on a singing competition show called Rock Star Supernova a year or two earlier. It was the same type of non-recognition for the artist who originated the arrangement just like the arrangement of YDKM that Reid sang.

Such a passionate performance from a young singer, Bravo!

As much as I didn't like "wailing Whitters" compared to her aunts, I too closed my eyes and cupped my ears as I used to do in EMI audition studio in the basement at Manchester Square. This young man has a talent that transcends his heros as, even though his voice is still quite high and might not lower much further, he has the power of a man!! good luck to him, I'd have signed him on the spot. Stage presence?? He doesn't need any more! His charm is in the appearance of vulnerability (I'm sure he isn't so) and he'll never need to flap his hands and leap about with a voice as flexible and (I'll say it) divine as this example. I hope he goes as far as his dreams and if it all proves too much, I hope he has the guts to get out and leave it all behind without too many regrets! Good luck Kiddo! All Right?

Australia had a similar talent back in 2011 in Jack Vidgeon who went on to win The Voice Australia. Unfortunately Jack was not supported much after by the industry and some people close to him I gather, went off to NY alone at age 16, discovered his sexuality and basically lost his singing career. I have seen him more recently on social media showing his fashion style. Jack at age 14 was a phenomenal talent also. His covers of Adele songs in particular, were brilliant
