Regulator Pressure on Air Compressors

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Why is it important to regulate the pressure on your air nailer? In this video I take a look at how to regulate the pressure from your air compressor to the air gun so the nail is set properly. Different guns need different pressure. Brad nailers, air staplers, and framing nailers have varied pressure needs and this video shows you how to adjust the pressure for different tools.

    Hi Dave...this is Dave! Glad this helped you out. Here's another tip. I used to drain all the air in my compressor and use the air/drain vent on the bottom to make sure it was clear. The other day I used the compressor and when putting it away I heard sloshing in the tank! Wait, it's supposed to be empty! Now I partially fill the tank with air again, tip the tank so the bottom vent is pointing straight down and blow it out a second time and a third if I don't think it's totally empty. Much better draining this way. Go forth and make stuff! Thanks for the comment as well.

    Nice video, Thanks! I'm a DIY inventor/hobbyist and am learning as I go..I have been leaving air in my compressor almost on purpose thinking it was ready for action then! Also I have a separate tank that I have left air in so will follow your advice now to prevent moisture and rust! I'm a little disappointed that my Dental Clinic/Lab compressure *(8Bar) only has a tank pressure reading and no regulator so will look to add one... Luckily my plasma cutter has one of it's own for the air intake, along with a moisture trap. I noticed what looked like some bubbling of moisture at the output connector of the compressor the other day so mybe this hs built up....There is a bleed/fluid release valve as well as the pull ring so will open that once the pressure is released. Thanks again for the info!

    Excellent information. What you pulled was the (PRV) pressure relief valve. That works by releasing excess pressure if the pressure switch becomes faulty and the compressor will not shut off at the set pressure or at the tanks maximum capacity. It's best to drain the air tank from the drain valve that's located underneath the tank, that way the water build up is drained out aswell.

  • @CleanSlateFarm

    @CleanSlateFarm

    Thanks I saw that in other videos so I'm glad to have that clarified. Should you do that water release if you're stopping work for the day, every time? Always release pressure and water content? I am guessing it's best practice so always drain all the pressure when you're done working.

  • @Thetrucky69

    @Thetrucky69

    CKH. No worries mate. Yes it is VERY VERY IMPORTANT to drain the compressor air tank during and after EVERY use from the drain valve underneath the air tank because water that is not drained from the air tank causes serious corrosion over time to the lower part of the air tank and any rust holes that can appear in the tank structure can cause the air tank to EXPLODE! Compressed air vessels are VERY dangerous if the air tank strength is compromised in any way due to rust etc.

    @@clavicusyes every time and actually my air compressors manual says to drain the water condensation after every four hours of use. So if you use it all day you may need to drain the tank a few times. If you live where it's hot and humid like myself (FL) you will have to drain often; you don't want water coming out your line into your tool (it CAN happen!) So keep a keen eye always. I have worked at an auto body shop with large compressors. Now only use a small +tiny+😂 compressor at home with the heat and humidity I find myself having to drain the condensation OFTEN!! TOO MUCH FOR MY LIKING BUT it is what it is! One sweet day I hope to afford a larger one simply because I have many air tools that require a larger unit to run as in my sanding D. A I need a much larger tank it requires a CFMS of at LEAST 10 at 90 psi my tiny one is a max at 4 :/ so I do have a need for the larger just can't afford 😭

But I noticed the hose that comes out the left side of the head unit that runs into the tank gets quite hot, almost to hot to touch after only a couple minutes of running. Is that normal? Great video but it is very important to know that some nailers require you never turn on a compressor with a preloaded brad or nail gun because it can fire on start. Check you manual to see if you can only load it with the compressor on. Also, the required pressure changes depending on the material you are using.

    The Brad Nailers that come with the Porter Cable compressor have a setting on the gun to adjust the nail set depth. So, if you had those, you could throw your sharpie away and just use the recommended air pressure setting and just adjust the nail set depth using the dial on the gun.

    Tire pressure is usually about 35 pounds PSI give or take. As long as the tank pressure is higher you'll be fine but about 60 or 70 would work. Basically the pressure in the tank and the pressure in the tire are trying to balance. You control that by stopping the air flow at the desired pressure. Hope that helps.

  • @CleanSlateFarm

    @CleanSlateFarm

    2 жыл бұрын

    The way compressors are designed is to fill the tank to a set pressure, stop running, and start to fill the tank again. There would be no point, even if you could let it run. There is still enough pressure in the tank to power the tool until the tank pressure is met. There are compressors that have a larger volume of air for larger jobs. If you need that much pressure get a larger tank. thanks for watching and commenting.

  • @CleanSlateFarm

    @CleanSlateFarm

    Without sounding snooty...any pressure over the tire pressure. Otherwise you will be filling the compressor with the air in the tire. Nature hates imbalance and what ever has the higher pressure will try to fill the lower pressure. Kinda like a weather system. Wind is caused by high pressure systems flowing to low pressure systems..more or less. Try 70 or 80 pounds but it really doesn't matter. Thanks for watching and commenting

    Yes, totally correct. If you are going into pine, a softwood, the pressure would be less. White oak, a dense hardwood, may need more ooomph. (Did I just say oooomph?) If the first nail doesn't seat properly just add more pressure. You can always use a nail set to seat the little bugger.

    Excellent video and / but you did not mention the valve low in the tank for release of moisture AFTER releasing the air pressure from the tank. This is important and all compressors tanks have these valves to make sure that moisture does NOT erode the interior of the tank

    You don't have to hold the plug on the side to let the air out that's only for purging air. There is a screw valve on the bottom of the tank that you can unscrew and let all the air out.

    Hi there, I have a 2 gallon Husky air compressor and when I turn the dial to increase the tank pressure, the needle doesn't move. I also just got a mastercraft brad nailer and there doesn't seem to be enough pressure to get the driver to return to start position. Is the 2 gallon air compressor too weak? Thanks

  • @CleanSlateFarm

    It should increase. Are you turning it the right direction? If the tank isn't pressurizing then there may be a faulty part. Ask at the store where you purchased or check the Husky website. Thanks

    Not bad overall, but there is no absolute set pressure as it depends on the length of the nail/brad/staple and more important the type material you're nailing. Hardwoods will take more pressure than white or yellow pine, and even pine can be different depending on moisture content or if it is pressure treated wood. Best thing is LOOK on the tool, but NEVER exceed 100 psi on any nail gun

    You're right. White oak is super hard and will take a bit more pressure to nail. Pine is soft and will vary. This video was meant to get most people off in the right direction. Thanks for the comment

    New air compressor user here. Is the tank pressure adjustable? Or is it default?

  • @CleanSlateFarm

    @CleanSlateFarm

    Great question. You probably can on some compressors but with a warning. Tanks are engineered to hold a certain amount of pressure. There are cut in adjustments and cut out adjustments. Cut out pressure is when the motor shuts off and regulates how much the pressure builds up. Probably not a good idea to exceed the manufacturers setting. The compressor will most likely have a pressure valve somewhere that will pop if pressure exceeds the limit of the tank...but I wouldn't want to be near a tank that has too much air and may blow. It's probably a low likelihood of happening but who wants a tombstone saying, "Let's see what happens when I exceed the pressure on this tank." If you need more tank pressure get a more robust compressor. Cut in pressue is the lower end of the scale and regulates when the motor turns on to replenish the tank. That would be okay to safely regulate. Happy pneumatics and thanks for watching.

    Is the outlet regulator supposed to keep hissing and releasing pressure til the tank equalizes? I have an old Craftsman compressor that does that. Is the regulator bad or is that just how the old ones worked?

  • @CleanSlateFarm

    If it's when you are releasing air when done I would think yes. There is a release pin on mine that when I pull it the tank hisses until equalized.

    Clean Slate Farm Thanks for the reply but I think you are misunderstanding me so I'll give you a more detailed description. I'll start with the tank completely charged up and the outlet regulator screwed all the way in. It's max is 100 psi. Now, if I turn the outlet regulator out til the needle reads say, 80 psi, the regulator will keep hissing and releasing air til the tank pressure drops to 80 psi. I am aware of the "pin" you mentioned. That thing is the safety release valve. It's there in case the motor doesn't stop running at the right time. It will pop open if the tank pressure exceeds it's normal maximun pressure by a certain set margin. I don't know what that margin is but I understand the principle. Anyway, I hope that is enough information for you to work from. Thanks again for the reply. Be well.

    Clean Slate Farm I don't know. It's an old Craftsman from the 80s. I think the regulator is bad. Fortunately I got a new compressor yesterday. It's a 4 gallon dual tank 125 psi oil lubed central pnuematic from Harbor Freight. It's the type you typically see framers and roofers using. I have the same 1/4" crown stapler you have. I was having problems with the old craftsman driving 1.5" staples. Those need 90 psi to drive properly and the old craftsman doesn't come back on til it drops to 80. The new one comes back on at 95. It's very important that 1/4" crown staples be driven in all the way because you can't finish them off with a hammer. They just bend. It's quite aggrevating. Thanks again for the replys. I think I'll check out the rest of your channel.

    Why do I need a regulator? I don't. Cut off wheels, impact guns, air drills, die grinders, air ratchets and orbital sanders need max pressure and high CFM. Regulators restrict flow. So do the quick connect fittings. I need to redo my who system, and I don't think I need a regulator, planning to remove it. Of course, I could never use my tools with a pancake compressor. Maybe that's the difference? Tools that don't need volume need a regulator? Don't staplers have a valve / regulator on the tool?

    Drain the air from tank, with the tank drain plug, on the bottom of compressor, to remove the water, not the way he did it.

  • @philipbohi983

    @philipbohi983

    This is correct. The thing he pulled in the video is a pressure release valve. When you’re done working and ready to store the compressor: you can release most of the pressure the way he did, or what I do is snap on a little air blower (unplug or turn off the motor too so it doesn’t start compressing again) and use it to clean my area and tools with the compressed air in the tank. When the pressure gets weak, remove the hose, tip the tank so the drain valve is at the lowest point, and crack it open. Water will shoot out and make a mess, so do this over a towel or outside. The water will probably be a little rusty too if the tank is more than a year old. The last step I do is shoot a little WD40 through that drain valve and into the tank. Close the drain and store. Also, put 3-4 drops of tool oil into all your air guns, and store them with oil lubricating the o-rings inside the guns. If it’s been more than a couple months since I’ve used my guns, I will fire a few fasteners through ALL of them the next time I charge the tank (to keep everything moving in the guns). There’s a 6” 2x4 block of scrap wood in the gun bag dedicated to “maintenance shooting”.

    @seananon4893

    WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG do not EVER put the amount of air in a tire, that’s written on the side wall. On a regular daily driver, you ALWAYS open your drivers side door, and on a label should be your VIN # and the amount of PSI to put in the tires that came with the vehical. BUT, for most trucks and suvs, that’s too much, and you want less than what they say otherwise you will have a very rough ride. The markings on the side of your tire, are max tire pressures. Now if your in a Jeep, off-roading, you usually let all but 5 - 10 psi out of your tires, so you can get better traction, but always air back up when you get on the road, or you will destroy your tires, and or probably roll over. Long story short, this man just gave you really bad advice. But pretty good basics on the tank regulator.
