Regular Show's DARKEST Storyline | The Saga of Drunk Benson

Ойын-сауық

SUBSCRIBE: / @roundtablevids
Regular Show has always been adored for being a mature Cartoon Network series that isn't afraid to make some pretty blunt stand-ins for adult situations and substances. However, they run a little deeper than one-off jokes! Benson Dunwoody has a completely secret arc that highlights his dark addiction and battle against alcoholism...through chicken wings. Yes, we're serious. His anger at Mordecai and Rigby has been remedied with throwing his life down a bottle. From drowning his sorrows in the sauce to finding love with Pam, here's the big moments in a big part of Benson's character development in Regular Show!

That's not even remotely true. Benson is a nice guy deep down, until you offend him. Benson believes that if you're going to do a job, you do it efficiently and you do it right. Mordecai and Rigby almost never hold up to this standard. This is when Benson loses it and lashes out. There are plenty of instances where Benson starts out as peaceful but Mordecai and Rigby make his patience run dry. Like the time Benson got sandwiches for everyone on the house, and the two thought it would be funny to order the 84 dollar sandwich. The time Benson wanted to get donuts for everyone. Benson giving them plenty of chances to impress and make him proud. He puts genuine hope in Mordecai and Rigby, hope that he can teach them more responsibility

And watching this without knowing anything on Benson as a character (because as a kid if a character was naggy, I disliked them. It was the same deal with squidward lol.) and as an adult too, I see why a lotta people love this guy now. Great video.

A lot of people forget that drunk Benson first appeared in a season 2 episode. Over the top, where they are at McHooligans (the only thing referencing an actual bar) and it was the only episode were drinks were actual drinks. Alcohol was never mentioned but again it was obvious.

Considering that Regular Show is basically a continuation of 2 in the AMPM and the show was originally rejected by adult swim but picked up by cartoon network, I'd say that it's pretty clear that virtually everything in the show was overtly intoxicant related for the adult audience and just a moment of enjoyment and fun for the younger audience.

I think the biggest thing no one talks about with Benson is how much his responsibilities make him miserable. Like there's the episode where Maellard demotes him and puts a demon lady as the boss of the park and he becomes just sort of chill like Mordecai and Rigby. He probably is using hot 'sauce' as a way to cope with the stress.

Regular Show is exactly what every single "adult show" wishes it was. They don't lean into being super extra edgy, or making sly "were so mature dropping f bombs all the time" jokes, instead they just straight up take these more mature situations at face value (or at least the most obvious that they could've done for a CN show) and throw them right there into your face and you either understand it or don't.

But during watching the show, I always thought he drank because he had bipolar (or just anger issues) and didn't know it. Him getting drunk was my favorite part of the show though, it just shows and tells us that Benson is just some down to Earth guy. Rather than some do who's always uptight. Man- can't believe I slept on this show when I was a teen...

Just a point to your "dangerous rhetoric" thing that you touched on, I know it's after it's blown up and not a lot of people will see this but you're exactly right. Myself, and most other addicts/alcoholics I know drink and use because it's exactly the person they want to be when they're sober (for the most part). Funny, confident, able to brush off comments and not get angry over every little thing. Hell, even a great leader. I don't think it's dangerous to say that, if anything I think it's necessary to realize you're doing it for that reason. The important part is recognizing and working to make yourself the person you wanna be without it.

While all these cartoon conspiracy videos do add a mysterious and dark twist that is exciting and seems like a leap into the dark for a kid’s show, as an adult it really just seems like the creators were making a show that can make social commentary based on real life while also making it viewable for kids. After all, most of us have had a raging dry drunk boss or two. Sometimes they relapse or other times just smash shit and scream in their office.

Also I think the show was so good was cause we could relate to it for the most part. I was probably 17-19 when the show came out, so Mordecai and Rigby(especially Mordecai) were characters I could relate to. Mordecai with his relationship problems and Rigby with his problems with not being seen as a reliable responsible adult due to actin out because of living in his younger brothers shadow. Because being the first born really is basically a test for your parents. And siblings after that are brought up different than how you were brought up. Long story short is the reason the show was/is so good. Is because it grew up with you.
