    There's a reason Putin didn't invade Ukraine and a reason Hamas didn't invade Israel until after Trump was out of the White House. Think about why.

  • @Radiofortheroad

    @Radiofortheroad

    7 күн бұрын

    As someone who covered that region pretty extensively for years I think what we on this side of the pond are missing is that the Trump administration was seen as unpredictable and, at times, more conciliatory towards Russia. This might have made Putin cautious about making bold moves like a full-scale invasion until there was a change over. However, the actual invasion started in with Crimea, so I think this pre-dates the Trump administration. But, in all fairness to the Trump administration, they were known for a strong support of Israel, moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and brokering the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab countries. This strong support might have deterred Hamas from initiating large-scale attacks. I think on the Russian side he is taking too much credit but on Israel and Hamas, not enough. The aftermath of the Trump administration saw a continuation of regional shifts in the ME region, and Hamas likely saw a strategic opening or felt emboldened by regional changes and internal pressures. I think that is the most likely scenario.

    OTOH, there is much that doesn't make sense about the European systems. In fact, our system is in large part modified to avoid the worst in the European systems. There's a reason our head of government doesn't have a seat in the legislature like the UK system. There's a reason why our Senate can stop a bill from becoming law whereas their House of Lords can only delay it for a year. BTW, practically speaking, the UK has only two candidates for Prime Minister, it will either be a Tory or a Labor Party member even though they, like we, have several political parties.

  • @Radiofortheroad

    @Radiofortheroad

    @@Anon54387 I covered both elements for years directly and I see where the EU's ordinary legislative procedure generally involves the European Commission proposing legislation, followed by joint adoption by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union (representing member states). This promotes consensus-building between different institutions and interests. The US system has a more complex process, with bills originating in either the House or Senate, followed by committee review, floor debate, and reconciliation between the two chambers. This can sometimes lead to gridlock and delays.The EU legislative process aims to create a harmonized legal framework across all member states, ensuring consistency and avoiding conflicting regulations. Here in the states, our system allows for greater diversity in state-level laws, which can sometimes create challenges for interstate commerce and regulation. I always tell people that the modern America is less unified than the EU member nations. Each of the 50 states wants to act like their own little country. It is a fatal flaw of our system here.
