Regular Car Reviews: 2006 Mazda RX-8

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

So many Mazdas of all shapes and sizes,
We did the Miata Which is why this franchise is.
The RX-8 was an improved RX-7,
which had been discontinued since 2011.
It came in all colors It came in all shades,
turd brown, magenta And gunmetal gray.
Naturally aspirated with side exhaust ports,
the engine was the 210 horsepower sort.
They said it was sleek.
They said it was classy.
But it was really just built
on an MX-5 chassis.
Its style was developed through design competitions,
in America and Europe,
in the Mazda tradition.
And also Japan,
let us not forget them.
Like America's forgotten about Robin Wright Penn.
The car was designed by Ikuo Maeda.
A man who loved cars,
and maybe paella.
The 50:50 front-rear
weight distribution
makes this the official car of Hitman: Absolution.
Your friends all will marvel,
while drinking their Coors,
when you open the freestyle suicide doors.
They provide easy access
to seats in the back.
Since drunkenly banging
takes all of one's tact.
A symbol of money culture made manifest:
That's how to describe the RX-8 best.
For this is what Mazda intended to purvey
to make you feel King of all you survey.
But this is a shadow?
A trick of the mind?
A king of the road?
Why, you are no such kind!
This car attracts bros.
This car attracts schmoozers.
This car attracts winners,
bambizzlers
and losers.
This car seats much lower than old Honda Fits.
But it feels like you're sagging like elderly tits.
Headlights don't go up,
nor do they go down.
They do not make noises.
They don't make a sound.
As a coupe it's not high,
nor is it too low,
but we cannot fit rollbars
for track day,
my bro.

    Ah, the RX-8. The displacement of an inline-4, the power of a V6, the fuel consumption of big block V8.

    Technically it's got the displacement of a V6 too (3.9L). It's just rated at 1.3L mostly for insurance purposes. Mazda only measures the displacement 1 of the 3 chambers per rotor.

Personally I don't think this would be good becaue after about 80K miles, the tips of the rotors in the engine don't seal properly because of wear and getting in there and replace the seals can be expensive.

    Arcaynex Don't buy one unless you're ready to pour a quart of oil into the engine every month religiously and drive it like a maniac on a fairly regular basis in order to use the high RPM's to clean out the carbon from the inside of the engine to prevent carbon lock. And be ready to swap out the four distributor caps, spark plugs, and wires as soon as you get it, as those have a penchant for going out early and unlike a piston engine, a rotary engine misfiring results in fairly quick self-destruction. If you can handle keeping an eye on the maintenance though, then it's a great car. I love mine, and get a lot of compliments and questions about it.

As low as those seats are it's common for passengers' knees to lean over near the gear shift and get in the way. 2. The sun visors have holes but in thick plastic so a slight angle blocks all light. It's great for when the sun is below traffic lights so you can use the bottom rim to block the sun while still seeing the traffic lights above it.

    so much missinformation in this video. "repairing a wankel is not as simple as changing piston rings" yes, it is exactly that simple, and probably even simpler, because of how simple it is to dissasemble and reassemble a rotary engine. oh, and it doesnt blow up "the oil dipstick is right next to the exhaust" no it is at EXACTLY the opposite side of the exhaust "if you shut it when its cold, it will flood" yes, it could happen in the early days of the rx8, but after a fast update of the cpu by the dealer, it is not an issue anymore "it is an improved RX7" no it is not, it is a totally different car in terms of setup and behaviour. rx7 was much closer to the term of a "supercar", while the rx8 is a comfortable sports car.

    You can use less than 91 octane in an RX-8, the engine's ecu just changes the tune for the lower octane, like how a Civic Si of the same era would, it says so in the owner's manual and in the product update. I wish this review would have focused more on how great the driving experience of this car is, how it tachs up so high and is built to take that, and the great weight distribution with the FM-R layout. And how it's more practical than most of the cars it goes up against (Mustang GT, 350Z, S2000) or any kind of upside at all would've been nice. Yes, it gets bad gas mileage, yes, it burns oil, that's it. Mazda extended warranties to cover the damage done with engine replacements and mailed out 'product updates' that explain the maintenance that comes with owning an RX-8/rotary car. I know someone who's daily driven an RX-8 since turning 16 and she's had no issues. It's a car that requires attention and care, and any car enthusiast that's actually a car enthusiast will stay on top of maintenance and care.

    Low octane fuel isn't good for many engines, I don't know about the RX-8 engine, but the Golf 4 16v engines for an example NEED 98 octane fuel to run properly, 95 octane and the engine won't run smoothly, 91 octane and a few kilometers... engine damage. Also, low octane fuel usually has lower quality, while high octane fuel is filtered, which is good for the injection system.

  • @raychristensen606

    @raychristensen606

    9 жыл бұрын

    xXYannuschXx The owners manual and a product update both state that 91+ octane is recommended, but an RX-8 can run on an octane as low as 87. The ECU will tune the engine down slightly to avoid misfire and other issues with lower octane. Obviously premium is preferred, but it can and will run on at least 87.

    I own a 2010 RX-8, which is a series 2. The one reviewed here is a Series 1. They did fix the dipstick in the Series 2, it now sits pretty close to the engine cover so it's no problem at all to get to. The prescribed guideline is to check oil every two fill-ups, but in mine depending on how you use it you can push it to three or four (note: don't just go straight to four until you know how much oil you're burning). The S2 has different gearing for more off-the-line performance. There are anecdotes that the Renesis had some design tweaks to improve reliability in S2 as well. Overall I think the Series 2 is a superior car both in performance and reliability, but unfortunately almost everyone who ever was gonna get one already had Series 1, so most of the S1 stigmas stick.

    There is a hungarian Wankel (+RX8) guru, and he said, that this is not a good solution, so PLEASE DON'T DO THIS! If You would like to turn off when the engine is cold, You should put a switch, which can shut down the petrolpump - and within a few seconds, when the RPM rises - 'cause of the lack of the fuel (and excess of air), You can turn the engine off. Then switch back on the petrolpump, and you can start the engine with no problem. With this method You can avoid piling up unburnt fuel (fuel flooding).

It was named on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 2004, 2005, and 2006. It also took home 1st place on Car and Driver's "Four of a Kind" comparison test. 2010 RX-8 placed 3rd out of 7 on Car and Driver's The Best-Handling Car in America for Less Than $100,000. It was also awarded the Editors' Choice Award by Grassroots Motorsports in 2003. yeah seems like a terribly bad car that everyone thinks is shit.

    From what i learned about reading about rx8 (i planned to buy one) the rotor seals are actually really easy to replace ... they are not all that expensive either and if you operate the car correctly you can enjoy all that 200hp 1.3l goodness for a long time before that becomes a problem and than again who worries about something you have to do every 80k miles ? its not like piston engines are the most reliable thing around and the insurance part is a very big deal in countries like ireland where insurance companies have been raising the insurance costs around 20-30% each 1-2 years because of some stupid ass reasons they took out of their ass my parents for their 180hp volvo now pay 1200euro per year for third party fire and theft (not full insurance) while last year both of them paid 500euro .... its a joke and some companies even classify the rx8 and rx7 as 2.6 liters because they say its a different style of engine so their capacity should be calculated differently which again makes insuring a rotary engine expensive in most cases in europe .... welcome to the land of high insurance and the free healthcare with 1-5year waiting list aka europe

    Apex seals are NOT easy to replace at all. Yes, rotary engines are simple with very few moving parts but you have to remove and disassemble the rotor housing of the rotor on question, clean all components, replace components and reassemble the entire thing within the engine bay for even a basic repair. This entire process could take several hours even to an experienced technician. Source: Apprentice mechanic with Mazda, we have maybe one RX-8 a fortnight come in on a towtruck for repairs.

    Rotary engines are actually pretty good. They have impressive performance for such tiny displacements. I hope I do not sound like a fan boy here, but they are generally good engines. They can run different fuels too.

  • @jasonl5523

    @jasonl5523

    9 жыл бұрын

    That "tiny" displacement is a misnomer. If you count ignition events instead of single swept volume you get about 3.6 liters. That helps explain the mileage. Kind of like 2 strokes used to be raced against 4 strokes at "half" displacement ie 125cc vs 250cc. If you count ignition events it's a different story. People ignore that for some reason.

    You do realize the 1.3l thing is all marketing BS, right? They measure ONE combustion chamber. That would be like measuring one cylinder on a v8 and calling it a 0.7 liter. Rotaries are more like 3.5-4.0L

  • @GrandDesignsSims

    @GrandDesignsSims

    9 жыл бұрын

    Jeremey Allen You do realise that 1, displacement doesnt work the same with different engine types, its a rough refference for engine size and 2. if you measure by the air displaced on a single rotation of the "crank", the RX8's engine displaces 1.3 Liters of air. Same thing happens with say a 1.3 liter piston engine, One full rotation of the crank and the engine will displace 1.3 liters worth of air. Simple mathematics and physics. Now going by the actual total air inside of the chambers at all times is actually 2.6 liters. Thats where the whole, its not a 1.3 liter, its a 2.6 liter thing comes in. This is where the true argument comes in. Do you measure an engines size based off its air displacement or its total chamber volume. Then we have you guys who thing that because it has 3 sides to the rotor and that rotor takes three rotations of the crank to make a full rotation. So therefor it must be atleast a 3.9 liter and so its a 3.9 liter that produces very little HP and torque and so it must be a shit engine. Ignoring the argument between 1.3 and 2.6, the rotary engine is a small engine. Its smaller than a 2.6L piston engine, But its larger than a 1.3L. Its more around the size of a 1.6L. Which isnt a large difference. And for the performance of the engine, Being the size of a 1.6L with physical displacement of a 2.6L comes with perks like being very light for its size, Being very efficient at constant RPM (As seen in Mazda's range extender motors) and reeving very freely. If you really want to argue, Take a look at the RX500, a 500cc rotary with 200HP. Rev limit at 15k. Then we can go on to talk about the 1.6L rotary that Mazda has been working on for years. While retaining the same size and being lighter than the 1.3, the new engine is to be a 1.6L on paper. Displacement you can say its a 3.2 but in reality it moves the same amount of air as a 1.6L piston engine, At the same size of a piston engine, while being lighter than said piston engine. Oh and this "They measure ONE combustion chamber. That would be like measuring one cylinder on a v8 and calling it a 0.7 liter." Complete bullshit. They measured both combustion chambers. One on each rotor, Ignoring the intake chambers which is where the true argument comes in. Do you include the intake chambers. The real facts are, the RX8 engine is of a similar size as the 1.6L engine in a Honda Jazz (Fit) sport that produces 250HP (Type s engine). The problem with fuel economy is partly due to the lack of support in the development of the engine and partly due tot he nature of the engine lacking the ability to produce clean burns. A lot of fuel with the addition of oil makes burns inefficient and so more fuel and high reving is required to get good performance.

    That is correct, the manual had much more hp than the auto. The way it mated with the rotary engine made a big difference, apparently. And supposedly, those rotary engines got "seasoned" with mileage and gained hp. Problem is, very few lasted that long without blowing up. Mine blew at 32K. They were so bad that Mazda extended the power train warranty, just for RX-8 owners to 60K, and I believe even higher later after I got rid of mine. Mazda knew they were full of issues. They claimed it was the first generation RENESIS engine (which my '05 had), and gave you a free gen II if yours blew up (which I received), but I didn't stick it out with the second one because I didn't trust it. I later heard the gen II wasn't much better. Such a shame because the concept of a rotary engine is great and the car was fun as hell when it worked.

    Why buy a very ugly car with absolutely no torque and very unreliable car?

  • @inudude15

    @inudude15

    10 жыл бұрын

    sargeslapnuts Because it's a damn good drive. Torque isn't the only way to go fast, it's just the best method of leaving a stoplight and/or converting rubber into smoke. The RX-8 is poised, balanced, sharp in the bends and that torqueless rotary screams to some serious rpm's so coming out of a corner in low gears it can really gather its skirts. And for that matter, it really isn't ugly, nor is it really that unreliable. On the beauty front, it's not a bad looking car, it just shares the 350Z's fate of being basic looking. It's just sort of the average sports coupe shape. If anything it's magnified by the fact that, at least in my opinion, all three generations of RX-7 especially the FD were all better looking cars. As for the reliability, they did warranty that engine for ten years and 100K if I'm not mistaken. And really, they do seem to be more reliable than the 7's that came before; RX-8's are getting up in the years now and you still see them. A clean FD on the street? That is sadly a rarity. It's not for everyone, it's not really a good car to buy used, and it will always be in the shadow of the almighty FD RX-7 that came before it and showed the world the rotary sports car at its peak. But the RX-8 is not a bad car, it is a good driver's car, it is fairly practical with its quasi-four door layout, and it is probably the most reliable production rotary to see production. For my money, I'd rather have an S2000 for a driver's car or a WRX/STi if I needed four doors, but to write the RX-8 off as ugly, torqueless, and blanket unreliable is just not doing it justice.

    I liked the RX-7, but, how could they get the RX-8 so wrong. It seems most cars these days, focus on looks, instead of substance. I'd pretty much choose an RX-6 over this one.

    Sooooo many emission rules have been put in place for manufactures between the production of the rx-7 to the rx-8 it made it very difficult for Mazda with the rotary, they kinda had to focus on things like looks over substance. That being said they did do a great job keeping the horse power up with the new rules without the use of turbo's compared to the rx-7 witch basically relies on its turbo’s to make any sort of power.

    +boyum *Mazda was forced to discontinue the RX brand due to lack of sales... not emissions regulations, the RX-8 continued to meet the world's strictest emissions regulations (California's CARB standards) right up until production ended in 2012 when fewer than 1,000 cars were sold.*

    I had a RX8, it flooded so much I kept extra spark plugs and could change them on the go. It was fun to drive when it wasn’t flooded….All is needed is an LS
