Refurbished MacBook Pro - BETTER Than I Expected!

Ғылым және технология

In this short video I take a quick look at a 16" MacBook Pro M2 Max from Apple's Certified Refurbished store. Should you pay full retail, or does it make sense to buy refurbished?

I always buy refurbished and have NEVER been disappointed. My theory is that a refurb has had a personal touch to it, an engineer or tech has looked at it and verified that it works and looks good, probably with more detail than the ones rolling off the assembly line.

My last MacBook Pro was refurbished. I got a solid 10 years out of it, plus a couple of years limping along at the end, until the graphics card died. Apple certified refurbished is the way to go. Just remember to back it up externally (good idea with any computer) and start slowly saving up for its replacement (again, a good idea for most things you own).

I bought an old MacBook Air from Backmarket and am quite happy with it. It came looking almost new and the battery was at 90%. They even give you a 1 year warranty. Impressive for a 2015 Macbook Air. I hope to get about 3 years out of it and I paid $176 incl tax.

Costco had a sale for a week or two and were selling the Max Studio for $1,500 and the Ultra Studio for $3,200. So 20-25 percent off. My understanding is that they are discounting the Mini now. Costco has not been known for big Mac discounts in the past but they may be a good place to get Macs now. They also offer 90-day return and 2 years warranty.

I tend to either buy Apple Certified Refurbished or directly from Amazon when they have nice discounts. A business colleague recently bought a new Mac directly from Apple and it was DOA. He returned it and bought one of their refurbs and all was well. Go figure.

Still very happy with my n-2 version apple refurbished iPad Pro, at about 30% off depending on how you determine that. Any downsides I experience is not bc of it being refurbished - came out as-new from the box.

I have looked at what models of refurbished M1/M2 Macs are for sale and it seems that most of them have base level minimum sized SSDs. I suppose that this shows that most people buy the smallest SSDs and so those are the models that are available in returns. This is very disappointing. This is because with M2s at least 256 Gb SSDs are much slower than 512 Gb models. I suffered from this issue when I bought a half price customer return iPhone SE 2020 for £229 from the Tesco outlet eBay store last year. Every single iPhone SE 2020 was the 64 Gb base model and so I was forced to buy the 64 Gb base model to avoid paying twice as much for the 128 Gb model that I would have preferred to own. The good thing about my refurbished iPhone SE 2020 was that it still had 100% battery capacity.

I gave Apple Refurbished a go for a 16” MacBook Pro M1. After opening the box and removing the paper cover the first thing I saw in the front right side of the cover was a stain from a cup, it looked like coffee. I decided to clean it off and proceed. Once the machine was setup I checked the Battery Cycles which was 17. That was fine. I then decided to take a look at the data written to the drive, it was a little over 19GB. without installing any additional software or open any programs I noticed that enormous amounts of data was being written. Within 40 minutes there was over 1 million GB’s of data on the drive. I called Apple Support. They could not figure out the problem and said to just return it. I did notice that there were 4 particular programs writing GB’s per second from each one. I wasn’t too happy about the experience after hearing all the good things about the program but I’ve decided to give it one more try. We shall see what happens.

Refurbished is great. Only done so one time, but I did that because I couldn’t find an intel Mac and I wanted one for gigging, and because at the time, running Windows alongside MacOS on M1 wasn’t ready for prime time. This was in 2021, so I managed to snag the last Intel MacBook Air 2020 with 16 GB RAm and 512 GB SSD. I gig with it to this day, but now that VMWare supports Windows 11 pretty decently, when or if this dies, I won’t cry too much. No, not boot-camping, never done so, don’t intend to do so either. For me, as I also do web-testing and consultancy on-site sometimes, being able to show a client that ‘hey, your website works well with X screen-reader under Windows, but fails hard with VoiceOver with Chrome and Safari on MacOS’ is priceless. It’s a bit slow, yes, but it definitely served my needs even with it’s loud fan. On-stage in Logic though, I don’t hear it anyway so don’t care much. Sorry for the long comment haha.

Great video! Your son’s reaction was sweet. I do not see any reasons as to why someone would buy brand new over refurbished. None. Unless you need to finance the device and pay monthly, then buy brand new. Unfortunately you cannot do the same for a refurbished product-at least not in Canada anyway. I was gifted a refurbished M1 MacBook Air in 2021 and I haven’t had a single issue with it till this day. I remember inspecting that thing for a good 10 minutes after pulling it out of the box. It was immaculate! From that day, I was convinced there were no differences. It led me to a theory: I have a suspicion that Apple uses their refurb store to sell off overstock. Think about it: Why would Apple go through the hassle of replacing almost every component, including the keyboard, screen and casing? They’re basically rebuilding the laptop at that point! Since there is a stigma associated with buying second-hand or refurbished, Apple will always have people who want to purchase brand new. But for those of us who are not concerned with superficialities and want to save some money, a la the “Certified Refurbished Store”. If anything, they will swap out the bottom casing because they have to engrave a new serial number on it. Apple’s refurbished devices always begin with the letter “F”. Take care.

I had the option of getting the m3 pro for the same price but with less ram (18gb) but with more cores (11core cpu, 14core gpu). I decided in the end the ram was more important than the cores. 14 inch MBP M3 Pro vs. Refurbished 16 inch MBP M2 Pro I have hard time to decide between brand new MacBook Pro M3 Pro 14 inch with 36GB RAM, 1TB SSD and Refurbished MacBook Pro M2 Pro 16 inch with 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD. Currently I am using MacBook Pro 16 inch late 2019 on Intel i9 with 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD. So, I don’t have any issue with portability at all. The indecisive comes from the M2 Pro vs M3 chip and RAM difference between those 2 machines (36GB RAM on M3 Pro vs 32GB RAM on M2 Pro) Based on those two differences, which one do you think has better value and better investment protection between brand new MacBook Pro M3 Pro 14 inch with 36GB RAM, 1TB SSD and Refurbished MacBook Pro M2 Pro 16 inch with 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD? I am not video editor or digital content creator or any graphic intensive users here. Any valuable input is welcome. Thank you.🙏🏼

There's not a huge performance difference between M2 Pro and M3 Pro. The M3 Pro is a bit quicker for single-threaded tasks, but that's like saying that one hypercar is slightly faster than another. If the M3 Pro model is the binned chip (11c/14g) and the M2 Pro is the full version (12c/16g), then the M2 Pro actually has more multi-threaded performance, and more GPU performance too (albeit without ray-tracing support). The 16-inch chassis also allows for better thermal performance, so the larger machines can sustain load for longer. I'd expect that any difference between 36GB and 32GB RAM would be very hard to perceive in real-world use. So, it's really down to whether you want the bigger form factor and are happy to run with refurbished, or if you want the latest model brand new.

I'd probably continue to take brand new. Apple refurbs through third party contractors with less than stellar labour practices and quotas for throughput. What that means in practice is that sure, it may look brand new, but I can't trust that whoever reworked it under contract to Apple took the same care that Apple would. The discount isn't worth it to me. If it's worth it you you, on you go, of course.
