Refret Time - Keep the Nibs or Leave 'em? 1984 Gibson Les Paul Custom Silverburst Review

Музыка

There comes a time when we all have to ask ourselves this question. When it comes time to #refret your #Gibson #Lespaul #Custom or other Gibson guitar, would you want to keep the nibs? While the only pro's to keeping them are cosmetic and keeping the guitar original, is it worth the cost? A previous owner of this custom decided to bite the bullet and keep them!
#Silverburst customs can be hard to find in an unaged state. It is getting harder and harder to find examples that haven't turned green. You can learn about the life cycle of Silverburst as well as it's first year of production in this video. Prototypes in 1977, first small batches in 1978 and 1979 being the first big year!
These guitars get #AdamJones of #Tool 's approval

Love it man! So many, if not ALL Norlins on your videos.....and I happen to love Norlins. I especially love the earlier maple necks/big headstocks/volutes. Even though this one is a few years beyond those features, I absolutely love silverburst Customs. Your videos are so much better than looking at random pics, when buying over the internet. Keep em coming!

Your videos inspire me to make a video of my 2001 main guitar, a black LPC that is a totally played like hell player's guitar. I always wanted another one, a silverburst! But now that I know they turn green, perhaps not.

Good question. If you are looking to keep it original, you have to weight the cost of fitting the fret exactly behind the nib. If it were my guitar, I would focus more on the shape and smoothness of the fret ends so the neck feels perfect yet broken in. My Ted McCarty model has a bound neck and the frets are shaped perfectly to the top of the binding. By far the best fret job of all of my guitars.

Love the little flip-out tuners. I recently bought a brand new guitar with similar ones (not a Gibson) and while they aren't terribly useful, it's a very cute idea and I really like it. Anyway, beautiful LP in your video and indeed an excellent job by whoever luthier did the refret. Can't even begin to imagine what meticulous work that must have been.

I thought Adam only had one of these silverburst and a white one for the drop B songs (or whatever lower tuning he's using). Also, these seem like green burst, perhaps the shots were taken with a specific lighting. PS: Oh, I feel stupid. A couple of seconds after I had my answer

That Silverburst finish is really, really handsome. So why do I hate the Silverburst on my Firebird Studio '70s Tribute so damned much? I'll tell you why. It's that goddamned SatinTone finish. It just sucks the life out of that guitar, like a black hole. I've got to do something to get that beast to shine like that Les Paul. It's driving me crazy.

You collect guitars that nobody else wants (much), which is great! There's so much foo-fooism and hallucinatory expectations ANYWAYS... Those fret "nibs" are at the top of the list of vintage features that are ridiculous to "value" because they make the guitar WORSE, but what can you say.... it's like those guitars that don't work because the original solder joints are snorked, but it would devalue the guitar to fix it so that it _worked._ (?) Knock yourself out, or at least knock yourself silly... My (only) fave Les Pauls are the chee-eep, all-mahogany ones anyway, but my favorite guitars of all are the weird ones. EVERYBODY - Guild, Gibson, Fender, everybody popped out at least a few howlers, very weird-but-useful guitars. When I run across something like a "Takamine" electric guitar - a SOLIDBODY, no-piezo Takamine, top-notch fretwork, top-notch parts - my guitar-perv antennae start twitchin.' Who-EVER thought that would be a good idea? To sell to... (?) Just lately I've been goozlied over the BEST S. Korean guitars, like the _self_ branded Samicks and Corts they made when they were done turning out the juiciest Schecters, PRS "SE', high-end Epiphones etc. Basically by the late 90's the Koreans COULD match the Japanese, fret-for-fret quality, when they wanted to, but boy did they come up with some biz- _arre_ feature combinations. And the world is a better place for it.
