Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian wins Iran presidential election | DW News

In Iran, reformist candidate and former health minister Masoud Pezeshkian has been elected president.
The electoral authority says that Pezeshkian got more than 16 million votes out of about 30 million cast in Friday's runoff. He was the only reform candidate allowed to run. His rival, hard-liner Saeed Jalili, an ultraconservative who opposes reviving nuclear negotiations with the West, got fewer than 14 million votes. It was the lowest turnout for a presidential contest since the Islamic Republic was founded, with less than half of eligible voters casting ballots.

The problem in both Pakistan and Iran is that elected governments don't have power to consolidate any sorts of reforms because of parallel/quasi establishments as the guest speaker mentioned. These establishments have been given so much carte blanche over the years that they have established their own parallel systems with no checks and balances at place. This is concerning for the people because in both countries civil liberties are threatened.
