Hi Robin, just been looking at various electronic pipes to buy as an addition for our Punk, Celtic, Ska band ‘The Cundeez’ for doing acoustic/semi acoustic set in smaller more informal settings. I always use my Highland pipes for gigs but really loving the sound and diversity available from the Blair set. Thank you for sharing your fantastic playing and letting us hear how they sound. I’m gonna purchase this one for sure. Best wishes from Dundee, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Thanks Gary for your lovely message. I'm sure you will find the Blair a fantastic addition to your music with The Cundeez (love the name). As you will know or find out you can upload various voices in different keys and be able to alter the pitch (Hz) as well. Not cheap but really worth it. I now have a wireless transmitter set up to an amp that takes away the use of a cable - usual guitar transmitter/receiver set up.. The on off foot pedal has now been replaced with a pressure (on off) pad attached to the Ergo bag (under the cover) operated by my left arm. I'm from Edinburgh but have lived in Australia for many years. Best wishes from Brisbane.

Thanks MVIntrepid for the nice comments.. Settings (Sensors) can of course vary for each person - depends on things like how how and or fast you lift your fingers. I also find if my fingers heat up a bit it can affect settings - but in general my settings are the same all the time. It is helps here is what I have HA 10, HG 10, F 15, E10, D 5, C-6, B 0, A 5. Seems like a strange mix but it works for me. May not for you. Murray Blair has as good Utube explanation of setting sensors kzread.info/dash/bejne/o5qombiRY5bPnc4.html&ab_channel=BlairDigitalBagpipes Give this link a try or just Google "Blair chanter sensor settings" or similar. Best wishes

@@bagpiperbrisbanerobinlivin9861 Hi Robin, Thanks for you,re reply but I meant the settings for the GHB as I love the sound you are getting. Bass Tenor and Treble. Im having a problem getting mine just right. (Like yours). I like that growl you get on yours to. I understand you might be busy and I really appreciate you taking the time to reply so Thank You. Keep up the good work. Regards, Rob

Hi Rob. Here is what I have. My pipes are made by Gillanders in African blackwood (circa 1970). I've got a Canmore hybrid bag (Medium extended size). I've got Balance Tone tenors made by Highland Reeds and am playing an Ezeeydrone inverted bass. My chanter is an R G Hardie Infinity chanter with a G1 chanter reed which plays at about A = 484 hz. . Blowing strength is between 28/30 inches of water. So for a G1 reed thats and "easy" or maybe and "easy plus" reed. I also use one of those "Tone Protectors" when I take my chanter out of the stock - to keep the reed humidified. I also use some "drone valves" in the bottom of the drone stocks. They are also from "Highland Reeds" - they just help control the amount and speed of air going up to the reeds - ensuring air is not wasted. Some would argue these are not needed at all but I find them useful . I imagine the growl you mention is the double toning that happens when one strikes up the bag initially, My experience is that the higher up the tuning pin the top part of the tenor drone is - the more growl and even a gorgeous gurgle can be heard before full pressure is applied and the drones settle into their pitch. Id like to get to top part of my tenor tuning up a bit more by about 1 cm. But I have my tenor reeds as short as possible and cant get the top part of the drone up any higher - so I notice just recently that Highland Reeds have produced a shorter reed for pipes that tune too far down the pin. Mine is not a critical problem as I still get a nice sound anyway but I think I'm going to buy or at least try the shorter ones. Beyond any nice double toning its always best to use the fullest extent of the tenor drone length the get the best sound. Others with an academic brain can describe in physics why this is but its beyond me. Hope all this is of some help Rob. Cheers Robin

@@bagpiperbrisbanerobinlivin9861 Hi Robin, I meant the GHB on the Blair chanter. But Thank You for that very immpressive resume, lol. Anyone starting out would find that information very useful. As usual very informative. Regards, Rob.

Hi Rob, Oops. I cant remember the actual settings on that particular recording, but, the sensors for each note for me are the same for the GHB, Small pipe etc on the Blair. I always have a bit of reverb on 8 - that goes to 30 but that is just too much. I'll have a listen back to the video and come back to you. I love the small pipes voice - the drones have a lovely growl to them. Cheers Robin

Regarding piobaireachd playing: What can be done about the f and c naturals that result on embellishments like dre, crunluaths and darado?

  • @bagpiperbrisbanerobinlivin9861

Hi Lotownner, thanks for the comment,. Not quite sure of what you are asking but happy to offer some answer. The Blair behaves just as a pipe chanter does. I'm no piobaireachd expert but the f and c grace notes in dre, crunluath and darado are by the fact they are gracenotes are the natural versions by finger position. They are not actual "notes". They are played on a pipe chanter same as a Blair and sound the same. The Blair responds to f and c natural fingering as you would find in the grace notes of those embellishments. You ask what can be done? Not sure if anything has to be done. Happy to explore with you if you can give me a bit more information. Regards

@@bagpiperbrisbanerobinlivin9861 I just discovered that the practice chanter setting gives out f# and c# when executing dre, crunluaths and darado. But, f and c naturals on ghb. My 'problem' is solved. Still learning/discovering about the Blair DC.

No air or wind power needed for an electronic instrument like this one.
