Story time: once after track practice I was hanging out with some friends at a nearby park and there was this random dude just there, playing his bagpipes, dude was amazing and we eventually made up this headcannon that he was going to slow make his way to the center of the park and get more popular until he had his own stage, because of that my friend said “be like a bag piper never give up” and my other friend says wow that guy just hasn’t taken any breaths, me as a wind musician went to the logical thought of “Be like a bagpiper never breathe” and now that’s a running joke in our friend group story time over

I've been piping for just over 11 years now I think, and I also used to be a competition piper (stopped doing cause of COVID, and havnt really wanted to do it again yet). for not playing for 15+ years AND recovering from covid, I thought you did really well Daniel! enjoy the beautiful set, and have a great day sir :)

Wherever you are, I'm sure there are some pipe bands that would love to have you listen to them during a rehearsal and just have a fun time! At least all the band's I've played in love having an audience! Best of luck, stay safe, and have fun! :D

@@gaysarahk I would say... you SHOULD. Especially if you're playing in a band setting. I've been in bands with close to 20 pipers in the circle, and that is LOUD. And some of the sets we play can last a long time. I'd be shocked if a study somehow showed that bagpipes aren't harmful to your hearing. That being said, in my 11 years of piping... I think I've worn hearing protection less than 20 times... That's mostly because I've learned to tune and adjust how I play without the protection, and when I try to play with hearing protection I can't figure that stuff out. It's not a good excuse, but it's what I've got. I've also taught students and told them to wear hearing protection as soon as possible. The quicker you get used to it, the easier it is to do with all the time. It is definitely a "Do as I say, and not as I do" situation.

The “official” national anthem of Scotland is actually “Flower of Scotland”. With Scotland not being an independent nation it technically doesn’t actually have one but “Flower of Scotland” is the most commonly regarded as the national anthem. Hate to break it to you but we most certainly do not have an ‘official’ anthem 😂 What we actually have is an ‘unofficial’ album of 8 or so songs that get carted out. Which one you get depends on the event and which one is popular in the region. It was decided that we were allowed to have the power to choose one but it wasn’t deemed politically important and the last time it was brought up in parliament, the MSP in question was told to drop it.

I've got to pick up a violin again. I think the problem with violin and really string instruments of that nature are that with instruments like a piano or even a guitar, if they are in tune the note will sound good, even if played by an inexperienced player, but with something like a violin, so much of whether it sounds good depends on technique, not the instrument itself. that's why whenever I hear most really young children who just started play, i sounds like a squeaky nightmare with maybe a hint of a clean sound in between each stroke. but even I can pluck a guitar string and make a pretty sound. so the longer I wait to pick it back up, the more fear I have that I'll never be able to do it how I did before.

@@moulderutes7942 Yeah, the older highland pipes, as well as many modern day pipes of non Scottish origin actually don't necessarily have that kind of check valve that prevents air from coming out of the bag through the blowpipe into the user's mouth, so to my understanding, it would be the common practice for those pipers to use the end of their tongue to close the blowpipe as they take a breath.
