And some of the sets we play can last a long time. I'd be shocked if a study somehow showed that bagpipes aren't harmful to your hearing. That being said, in my 11 years of piping... I think I've worn hearing protection less than 20 times... That's mostly because I've learned to tune and adjust how I play without the protection, and when I try to play with hearing protection I can't figure that stuff out. It's not a good excuse, but it's what I've got. I've also taught students and told them to wear hearing protection as soon as possible. The quicker you get used to it, the easier it is to do with all the time. It is definitely a "Do as I say, and not as I do" situation.

I follow a piper on IG and the number of people she gets commenting how she "never breathes" because she isn't obvious about it and the bag is the one blowing the pipes is actually kind of horrible hahah! :)
Daniel being a bagpiper is actually so fitting... it's like he was meant to play it.
I went to Dunedin High school for a couple of years and had the honor of knowing Mr. Keith before he passed the same year I graduated. I always wanted to try the pipes and now I'm kicking myself that I didn't!! Brings back good memories.
Idk how i missed this but seeing like one of my favorite music KZreadrs play the bagpipes is soo cool! Like i used to play the bagpipes (was in a band but never got into competitions like my brother) so this, this is inspiriting and i love bagpipes too
This video is a serotonin boost fr, he looks genuinely so happy playing bagpipes love to see it !

I find it so wholesome how excited he seems he’s so cute compared to the other.. rather scary ones.

I absolutely love bagpipes. I get to hear pipe bands every fall and it makes me so happy.💚
When you first started out... your neighbors probably thought you were doing something dark with a Canadian goose... Myself, I think bagpipes really are amazing. Look forward to seeing more piping.
You can do it! But still just the bagpipes 😂 “I’m gonna piss off my neighbors so bad!!”

I have tears in my eyes for laughing so hard. Thank you. I needed this today.
Love how genuinely you were excited about the bagpipes
Everything suddenly makes so much sense, and I loved the utter joy on your face unboxing the beautiful bagpipes! Can't wait to see them make an appearance in future videos!
Daniel fangirling over bagpipes is so wholesome
I feel my heritage screaming out to me. I loved this. Very talented, Daniel, very well done
I would love to hear the stories Daniel’s neighbors has about what they have heard from Daniel’s house.
I’m Scottish so can’t help but love the bagpipes, I’ve tied to play them in the past and they’re really hard so props to you. I’m from Bathgate and we’ve won best pipe band many many times. Also Highland Cathedral is my personal favourite on the bagpipes 🏴🤷🏻♂️

I'm from cologne, germany, and I can only agree on Highland Cathedral. One of the most famous bands of Cologne's folk music, Bläck Fööss, wrote lyrics to Highland cathedral and called it Du (bes die Stadt), which is one of their most famous songs.

This was so wholesome! Enthusiasm is literally the best thing in the world, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I happen to love bagpipes, so it's extra neat for me. For anyone who hates bagpipes, please understand that they're intended to be played outside in wide open spaces, and you've probably only ever heard them inside, and that truly makes a world of difference.
@mhenderson7673

Also, in my Scottish school on memorial days one guy would play the bagpipes in the middle of the school so the whole building could hear it. When bagpipes are played outside they can be heard for literal miles, so sometimes you get a nice musical surprise if there's an event going on anywhere nearby
YOU GOT, SHINY OBJECT SYNDROME
that line about potential was so raw
Daniel, your infectious enthusiasm is a joy to watch. I'm proud of you for returning to your childhood roots with such an underrated but magnificent instrument. You better have fun with that.
That feeling when you pick up an instrument after years of not playing even though you used to be very experienced with it. For me, it would be trombone once I actually take mine out of storage.

Me too! I played my trombone for the first time in several years about a week ago. I’ll hopefully get back into it once I have the space for it in my apartment, but for now it sits behind my desk-a very inconvenient place for a trombone.

I've got to pick up a violin again. I think the problem with violin and really string instruments of that nature are that with instruments like a piano or even a guitar, if they are in tune the note will sound good, even if played by an inexperienced player, but with something like a violin, so much of whether it sounds good depends on technique, not the instrument itself. that's why whenever I hear most really young children who just started play, i sounds like a squeaky nightmare with maybe a hint of a clean sound in between each stroke. but even I can pluck a guitar string and make a pretty sound. so the longer I wait to pick it back up, the more fear I have that I'll never be able to do it how I did before.
The flashback to pipe camp when you played “Pumpkin’s Fancy” was incredible.
His excitement is infectious and adorable. Hell yeah, bagpipes!
Daniel is unironically the embodiment of our worst neighbor nightmares. Bagpipes, percussive noises, cats, weird sketches at 3AM and of course let us not forget the many personalities that all live under the same roof.
I. LOVE. Bagpipes. I'm a competitive Irish Dancer and was also on my school's performing team for quite a while, meaning we shared a lot of venues with bagpipe players (Especially on St Patrick's day). It's really, really fun. Your love of them makes me feel somewhat validated, in a weird way. Love your vids!
I also freaking love bagpipes so this was both entertaining af and beautiful
People look so adorable and wholesome when they are genuinely excited 😂✨
Wow, its awesome how the sound can still come out while you're taking a breath because you're squeezing it. It's kind of like circular breathing. Also didn't know bagpipes have reeds. I'm a bassoonist and am happy to have you join the double reed family.
@joshuakroll3203
Жыл бұрын
The circular breathing thing is definitely what led to the bagpipe's development, and iirc, the most primitive form of bagpipe could be considered the bladderpipe, which has just a little bag between one's mouth and the chanter. Usually, they don't have any drones.
@moulderutes7942
Жыл бұрын
Modern day pipes, not sure about super old ones. All have a check valve (called flapper) and the end of the blow pipe. That way instead of circular breathing using your cheeks as the buffer you use the bag.
@joshuakroll3203
Жыл бұрын
@@moulderutes7942 Yeah, the older highland pipes, as well as many modern day pipes of non Scottish origin actually don't necessarily have that kind of check valve that prevents air from coming out of the bag through the blowpipe into the user's mouth, so to my understanding, it would be the common practice for those pipers to use the end of their tongue to close the blowpipe as they take a breath.
@stoutyyyy

There’s a double reed in the chanter and then one in each drone as well
