Refinishing and installing a used 35' commercial flag pole from craigslist.
I bought a used 2001 35' commercial flag pole from Craigslist that had been replaced by a new 80' flag pole. This video shows the restoration and installation of the pole sped up 32X. I used Hydroflouric acid first and then rinsed it with water. Then I used 150 grit sandpaper and then red Scotch-Brite before covering in Rustoleum clear coat.

Just coincidently I placed a pole last Sat. Momentarily flew a 48 star flag for my late Dad.Got a fresh, good quality flag on now. Stay proud.

Love it! I am really proud of my flag pole and I look at it every day and have gotten quite a few compliments from the community about it. I also love putting a fresh flag up. Around here I use it to determine wind speed and direction a lot.
I don't know what to say. For some reason this strikes an emotion within my soul that few things do. In a time so many have not a clue about life and the pursuit of happiness, it defies logic how we fostered such a lost cause attitude towards our way of life. With tears in my eyes, the spirit your project brings to many is greatly appreciated by a many of us. The spirit is alive and well amongst far more of Us than those that hasn't ever paid a price of some kind for the betterment of our Country and Allies. God Bless you for your love of our Flag, Country and the people we disagree with but still protect them all the same. Thanks again a thousand times over.... Looking forward to possibly the most important 4th of July I've had in my lifetime ...

Thanks Clarence, there was a lot of work to get to that part and I was really proud to get to raise it up that first time.
Wow cool video. Great job putting that pole up. It was picture perfect as you were raising the flag. The sky was beautiful and the wind caught the flag at just the right time 🙂.

R Manchester, thanks for the input. This is my first time finishing metal. I have used hydrofluoric acid to shine up some aluminum rims on our wheat truck but that is it. I spoke to a friend who works with aluminum as a profession and he suggested the sand paper, scotch-brite and clear coat as a finish. It began very oxidized and ended up pretty shiny. I don't know how long the clear coat will last where the flag and cable rub on the pole. When I talked with a couple of professional flag pole installers they suggested skipping the clear coat and letting it oxidize naturally. I would do it my way again using the same method to answer your question. I am very happy with the finish.

I know this is an old post, but I just salvaged a 20' flagpole from disuse that had been just sitting there. It, too, needed refinishing and so I made a lathe in the yard! I made a wooden pulley and attached it to the base of the pole and used a 1hp motor I had laying around to drive it. The top of the pole rode on a pair of roller blade wheels mounted to a base (on a stack of bricks lol). It spun about 300 rpm or so, based on my quick math. It was easy to just walk along the pole and sand while spinning! Finished it with clear coat and a coat of wax too.
BEAUTIFUL!!

Love the video ..thank you / Question, if you had it to do over again, would you use the same method to clean it?
Just awesome

excellent!
Very nicely done. I am going to refinish my flagpole to remove dark marks apparently caused by brass hardware holding the flag and banging into the pole for years. I am wondering if you found the Hydroflouric acid helped a lot? Do you know the strength of the acid you used? Where does one purchase stuff like that? Did the sandpaper take off dark marks? Thanks.

It really cleaned it up. Mine has gotten dark marks again from the same issue. I got the acid from a dairy supply store. They use it a lot to clean their stainless tanks. It wasn't very expensive and they recommend the dosage. I am not sure what it was. I really enjoy the flag pole though. I hope yours turns out really nice!
Looks real good! I'm curious as to how far they had to haul the ready mix?

It is about 35 miles to where we do our banking and grocery shopping and also concrete.
who are the 9 jerks that didn't like this video?
Just watched your video i just got a 30' pole and its full of stains from the iron from a sprinkler. You think that hydrofluoric acid will work? If so where did you go about getting it i only see places online.

john diblasi, you may need to sand some too but I would sure try it. It will clean the whole pole. I live in an agricultural area and I purchased agallon of mine at a nearby dairy supply store. They use it to clean stainless steel tanks.
Great job. Patriotism is often seen nowadays as somehow decadent, even proto-fascist. Well bollocks to that - I fly my country's flag with great pride, albeit on a flagpole not nearly as brilliant as yours. Best wishes.

Thank you, just because we are patriotic or proud of our own country doesn't mean that we are disparaging our putting down someone else's country. Fly your country's flag proudly wherever you live.

It's worse than that Greenhorn: it's some of one's own countrymen and women whose political correctness has poisoned any decent sense of patriotism in the name of "multiculturalism" and "diversity". I'm all for both, but integration with the host nation is paramount, else they don't get to come and enjoy the privilege.

TRUE.
What did they charge for that used pole, if you don’t mind me asking? I’m going to ask some local businesses that seem to no longer user their flag poles if I can buy and remove one.

Dave Joyal , I paid $500 for this pole. It needed cleaning and is a 35' commercial interior crank halyard. It also came with the tube that you cement in and a 10'x15' flag in great shape and a 6'x10' flag. The guy was upgrading to an 80' pole. I would recommend looking at Taco Bell if you want a large pole and asking them. They all took down their American flags around here and have stood empty the last few years.

Greenhorn 40 thanks for the reply! You’re flying a 6x10 I take it? Did any parts need replacing? Does the truck still revolve freely? I ended up finding a used 30’ internal halyard (like yours) commercial fiberglass poll. Strong, yet really light weight. Got it for $100, but so far have spent about $400 in new parts. It didn’t really need them, I just wanted everything new. New halyard, snaphooks, beaded retainer ring, counterweight, truck, ball top, flag, crank handle for internal winch, etc. it all adds up fast. Great job and thanks for posting this video!
very nice. wish us Canadians took as much pride but all you see up here are torn up sad ass flags flappin in the wind

C. D., I wish that everyone was patriotic and proud of their own country and it's flag. The sad thing in the U.S. these days is that half of the country is embarrassed to be proud of our flag, pathetic really.
Is this song a true story like the video?
