I was in the marching band in college, and we'd always have to stop playing when either team broke their huddle or got into formation. And I was always pissed when opposing teams' bands didn't follow the rule and weren't penalized. I am glad to see the ref enforce the rule.

@@driveman6490 To be fair, in the last half of the fourth quarter (all I watched) there were a couple missed PIs by Stanford. Although the second one they immediately corrected by calling PI on a pass that wasn't catchable.

Never seen an official actually call it out. Seen it happen multiple times too.

This has been a thing for as long as I can remember; no ‘artificial’ noise once the offense gets in the huddle. I remember a game at Syracuse in the late 90’s, the Army band was told to stop playing when Syracuse huddled up. Army also had a guy with a microphone leading cheers over this huge speaker they brought, and that was shut down very early on as well.

I agree. I'm a PSU fan and we push the boundaries a lot, especially during the White Out game. I think most B1G stadiums break this rule quite often during big games or big drives.

I used to run the PA systems at games, ill never forget the heart drop feeling you get when a song comes on full blast at the wrong moment. As the DJ we were always told its a big deal, and not to mess it up.

Reminds me of that one MLB clip where the pitcher is in the middle of his delivery, and at that moment the opening tone to "Kickstart My Heart" plays at full blast over the PA, upsetting the pitcher's delivery. Not sure what the umpire's call was for that one, but I probably would have called no pitch, especially if the away team was on defense.

This happened at the Wisconsin game when they played Buffalo in week 1, but the refs literally did nothing. The music was constantly playing and it was so loud that the Wisconsin fans were complaining about it during and after the game. Fans were threatening to not come to another game if the atmosphere was like that at the next game. On the radio shows after the game, Wisconsin fans as well as the radio broadcasters were questioning if it was even legal to be doing what they were doing.

This has been a rule in football at all levels for quite some time now; at least 15-20 years. Good on the ref

To be clear for those who don't understand the crowd can use their VOICE, which means you can scream, yell, holler as loud as you want. What you can't use are amplifiers, such as a speaker, megaphone, etc, while the opponents offense is lined up.

This used to get called out when I was in Highschool band. I think the average person doesn't realize its a rule but it makes sense. The advantage you get at home from having a big loud crowd makes a big difference, and the PA or Band can be a whole lot louder and more disruptive than the crowd.

I commented before seeing this, but it happened to us (University of Maryland Marching Band) back in the 80s. It was a rookie mistake (director's first year) but we never did it again. IIRC, the infraction at the time would have been unsportsmanlike conduct.

At the conclusion of the game, the ref should have said, “ok PA announcer, you can play music now.”

I'm a high school official in Louisiana. This is an absolutely correct warning. I've watched the "white hat" call a time out...go to the home sidelines, take the headset off the coach and request to speak to the announcer. He told the announcer...right in front of the head coach... "if I hear another complaint broadcast over the air about a call, it will be an unsportsmanlike conduct flag on the home team with a 15 yard penalty." The head coach grabbed the headset and shouted into the mic on the headset..."HEY!...KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!" Exactly. Don't be playing loud, disruptive music during lineup... that's not the same as crowd noise. Just sayin'.

And Colorado blows a 29 point lead. 😂

Can confirm on the TCU band side of things. The drum majors have to cut off the band as soon as the center gets set or touches the ball.

The PA system operators absolutely know the rules - without question, they know the rules Playing music while the opposing offense is at the line of scrimmage has to come from the top, The NCAA will reach out to the Colorado administration

That was one of the funniest things I've ever seen a referee announce. 🤣🤣

It's not just music. If this rule were not in place, home teams could play 200+dB crowd noise at the QB before every snap.

The fans booing dont realize THEY are supposed to be making the noise themselves if they want to opposing offense to have a hard time hearing. Your voice is supposed to be hoarse the day after a ball game.

Having announced for 25 years including college level, that is one of the very first rules that you learn.

The entire Colorado student section got ejected from the 2005 Neb game as well. I believe it's the only time in CFB an entire student section has been kicked out of a game. They just wouldn't stop throwing junk onto the field.

Tbf I don't watch football so I didn't know about this.

This is a legit rule. Went to an FAU game years ago where the PA would play music and sound effects as the opponents offense would run a no huddle offense. Ref had to tell them to stop once the opponent lined up to snap.

Anyone else remember the old NCAA games where there was literally a mechanic to pump up the crowd at the line to disrupt the other team

We had to stop playing in marching band, but that didn't stop us from yelling as loud as possible xD

FACT That Ref is AWESOME I see that kind of CRAP being done at Stadiums all over. And at All Levels of Football. And I myself have been a PA Announcer at many levels of Football. I have worked and called High School Games, Semi Professional Games and Youth Games.

Even at a recreational league level, the music always stops before the offensive team prepares to snap the ball. Colorado knew the rule, yet was trying to gain an unfair advantage. Then again, I don't expect sportsmanship from Coach You-Know-Who.

Anyone remember Penn State vs Michigan and they had to call a timeout the first play. Wasn't music being blasted on the PA for that? I always wondered how that was allowed Edit: Just rechecked the broadcast. The PA playing the music didn't stop till 7 on the play clock which is exactly when the offensive line actually got set. Before that all the linemen were still standing up

It's definitely not allowed by the rules but I think refs typically let it slide for the first play. They did stop playing when the QB got set, but really they should be stopping the music when the center gets in formation.

If you rewatch that first play you can see the music stopped the moment center was in formation (leaned over and ready to snap the ball). Michigan wasn't actually set until there was 6 seconds left in the down clock, so they were allowed to play the music until that very moment.

The claim is that the crowds are loud enough to blast out the snap call on the field which I don't disagree with. But you can definitely tell that there is something blaring over the PA system even with the crowd noise. I think they were able to get away with it because it isn't the sole product of the noise and it is still at the start of the game so they can probably get away with a soft excuse like let this song finish or oops had volume too loud if they needed to.

i've never been so into college football and its antics as i have right now, while i'm in college

Which is funny because Stanford has been one of the worst teams in the Pac-12 for a while now. They haven't been good since like 2015. So seeing Colorado lose to one of the worst teams in the conference is even more hilarious.

I remember running into that issue in college. That time, the issue was the booth not paying attention.

I have never attended a football game where the music or sound effects continued when play resumed. I’m sure there are rules in place that are stressed to all involved and everyone has a clear understanding. In addition to all that it’s just common courtesy and good sportsmanship. Besides, if the members of the “12th man” are doing their jobs, which is completely acceptable, nothing else is needed. Good sportsmanship should be the most important element of sports events but unfortunately we have drifted away from that. After all, it’s just a game!

I hate when fans boo completely justifiable calls by refs. Shows just how little integrity they have

Well damn. So there actually is a rule against, say, playing an extremely loud noise through the speakers when the opposing kicker's trying to make a field goal.

There was a baseball game where the umps blew a call and the organist played 3 blind mice. The umps did not like that very much.

We're talking about sports commentators. The color guy would be out of a job if he wasn't saying stuff like "in this situation the offense is looking to score" or "you need defense to do well in this game".

Wait what😭 how is that jackass behavior. The PA announcer forgot about the rules for a sec and had to be reminded. Its the same pa announcer colorado has had for 10 years now. None of this has to do with deion. He simply just forgot its not “jackass behavior”

I remember seeing one game, a few years ago where Colorado was getting it's ass handed to them, on their own field and the refs had to throw out the entire student section for throwing stuff onto the field in a nationally televised game. Shows you the level of class Colorado students\fans have.

CU students are entitled rich kids that do nothing but party because they always have daddy’s money to fall back on if they fail in school.

I remember playing on a local baseball team growing up in the town I currently live in. There was 1 team we hated playing against. 2 of the moms who had players on the other team were well known for their antics, this particular game…… oh boy. They both had air horns. They would use them right before anyone on our team were about to swing … by the 2nd inning, the home plate umpire told them both to leave. They refused. Luckily this field happened to be right by the police station. I live in bridgeview, Illinois and Bedford park is nearby. Bedford park police station was near the baseball field. Didn’t take long for police to escort them away.

Hey, they mentioned our cowbells!(I'm from MSU). Imagine a stadium so loud you can hear it inside your house 10 miles away on the other side of town. Those cowbells are legit deafening.

Literally was thinking what type of bullshit is this blaring music as the teams are lining up 😂

In Marching Band we got it drilled into to heads that we can’t play a single note during a play or else our team would get a penalty. But I’ve never seen the rule actually referenced during a game until now

Nice of them to give warning instead of just throwing the hankie. This is amateur level stuff PA guy should know.

True,the sad thing is that despite the noise,hand signals were fundamental especially if the crowd was extra rowdy,but these days QBs at the NCAAF and NFL levels rely heavily on the microphone in their helmet so much. But I understand especially if the PA is being too extra,ultimately it's on the coaches and players to stay disciplined enough for any BS distractions

​@@kennethmullenixit's not just because of coach to QB communication. PA systems get much louder than crowd noise. The offense would not be able to hear the snap count and would be penalized out the wazoo.

@@heroesofthescape idk about that,you dont necessarily need to hear the hear the snap count,the way I was always taught you dont move unless you see the center move. Even if the offense is in the Shotgun the center can set the cadence by either silently counting in his head,usually no more than a count of 4,or he looks back/underneath his legs to see if the QB is doing some kind of motion,usually the QB will just lift his leg. If they in regular I formation,the QB will usually just wiggle his hands underneath the center letting him know to snap the ball. Receivers and everyone else are watching the line of scrimmage for movement. I was just at the Texas OU game and the crowd was pretty loud,but the PA didn't seem to have any affect on play calling. Offsides penalties usually come from being nervous and undisciplined,sometimes the defense can be moving around a bit to get the linemen to jump offsides but usually nothing happens. Even with a hard count,offenses practice the cadence,the hard count might be "on 2/3" usually all that is learned from the 2min drills you do everyday in practice,usually the coach or QB will put up the signal for the hard count.

Oregon State got a similar request from a ref earlier this year with their third down chainsaw noise. The opposing team was in hurry up mode, so the 3-to-5 second sound that is normally long over by the time the team is approaching the line of scrimmage wasn't over yet. As with here, the crowd booed, but the noise quit happening when it wasn't supposed to.

Would have been funnier if we heard 'Unsportsman like conduct: the DJ. 10 yards, first down'.

We (the pep band) got our football team a penalty this way in high school. The coaches were pissed! In our defense, the team was horrible and already losing by 35 points anyway. The only people left in the stands were us and when we weren't playing we were bored to death.

Band got one while I was a member my senior year in high school. We were up by 50 though in the 4th quarter so the coaches didn't care. I think the yellow flag still hangs above the ceiling in the band room to this day.

reminds me of one time when i was in the washington state band and we were told we had a warning about this before the game even started lmao, funnily enough it was stanford's football team who complained about it. we never got called out by refs for it my entire 4 years there

When I wasa in high school, we had a huge marching band with around 200 players, mostly brass. We were loud as..., well, got threatened with a penalty like this announcer. The thing is, we played no matter who was on offense. Just having a blast in the stands.

Soo easy to root against Colorado! And Deion definitely showing his true colors to every recruit out there, it’s all well and good when you’re winning but you’re “garbage” and embarrassing when you’re not. F$&@ that guy 😂

Sigh, you're right, and that's a shame. I was in full support of Deion when he switched schools, due to them screwing him over with some shady shenanigans. I also appreciated his blunt honesty, and openness about how he was going to transform the Colorado team. His moves were too radical for some, but the school supported him, and that's all that matters. Since then, however, he's become a whiner and a professional victim. There's a line between kids having fun, and being disrespectfully arrogant. Deion's son is talented but he, and the team haven't won a damn thing. Deion can whine about the media all he wants, we all know he's doing everything he can to draw attention to himself, and the team. Before long, it'll backfire, and the arrogance and mouthing off will give every Colorado opponent extra motivation to embarrass and humiliate Colorado.

I’ll never forget my dad yelling at the opposing team’s announcer during a high school soccer game I was in. Literally commenting freely even with the ball in play, to the point where teammates couldn’t communicate. The guy shut up the rest of the night lol. Good on this ref for not ignoring the issue

However, you are talking about soccer. The ball is literally always "in play" in a soccer match, and the clock doesn't stop. When are you supposed to commentate during a soccer match, if not when the ball is in play?

It was the rule that only on brief instances when play stopped (goal kicks, substitutions, goals, throw ins, free kicks) could the announcer address the crowd. I still remember hearing the guy say “brilliant play!” when his team did something of note. After a few times it’s like… cmon man get out of the way! Good memory regardless for me 😂

Many home fields do this. Blast music right up till line goes set, sometimes up till snap itself. Georgia Southern was doing this against BYU a never called. Glad someone pointed this out.
