Reengineering the Redcat Ascent Fusion!
Спорт
We recently looked at the new Redcat Racing Ascent Fusion RTR RC crawler ( • I Test the Redcat Asce... ). While quite capable, I felt it was about at its performance limit when compared to other vehicles in its class.
I found the front end of the chassis quite busy. The rear end doesn't meet WRCCA comp ruleset standards, the tires have a LOT of sideways play, and the geometry up front just isn't quite right - there's even a little bump steer!
One issue with all this modifying this vehicle is challenging: you already have a good, strong servo, an FOC brushless system, carbon-fiber chassis rails, and a nice, lightweight body. So what do you do to address its shortcomings?
Well, I've spent a week on this and wanted to bring you a path to addressing the issues with as little pain and extra hardware as possible. Let me show you what I've done!

I’m speechless. Your development of the car is FANTASTIC, you completely transform this beauty into a real competitor… And you took the time to resume everything on your website very carefully and you share everything for free… What can we say except BIG THANK YOU MATE YOU’RE THE MAN. Very generous, you make the hobby becoming even greater !!!!! I just hope the brand will respect your work how it should be, and not just pick up everything to improve their product without any words or whatsoever… Nothing surprises me anymore by these days… I wish I’m just saying BS. What a rig now !!!!! LOVING IT and looks even better… REDCAT should make a special version under your name like “Ascent TNT Evo Special Edition” or something and giving you a pourcentage on the sells, I’m sure this will be a big hit and a very very cool move from REDCAT !! Why not ?? 😃 Because actually everyone is agree to say it looks good but isn’t a good performer………. 🤞

yep.. right there with you. I had been saying this even from the non-fusion ascent came out; the geometry was bad and could be seen in pictures let alone in driving. I really didn't understand also how ppl believe this was a good value. It makes me sad how conditioned people are to believe this. The work you put in it should have been done in the factory; no reason for in 2024 for rtr's to a)come with brushed motors, and b)poor geometry. We should not have to fix their issues if we're paying for them assembling them; i now just build my own because in the end, its cheaper than buying an rtr and replacing so much and repairing their issues. Thank you for being so specific on the cons; we can't just say everything is great and we need brands to do better.
@RCTNT

Thanks - though I will pick on one thing: some brushed motors are amazing. There's definitely a place for brushed motors in the hobby. Nice as FOC is, a good brushed system can be lighter and go better than a heavy Fusion (though of course, flat brushless outrunners are epic value and their power-to-weight ratio cannot be ignored!). But anyway, this was a satisfying overhaul :) Cheers

Aw thanks :) I can design inserts with softer sides for better side-hill action. With TPU, that kind of thing is actually a bit more difficult, but I'm going to get around to thinking hard enough about it to implement a solution. I agree it has its issues, but my approach here probably isn't for everyone. I appreciate the kind words though :) Cantilever suspension is interesting, eh. I've got more about it in a review of a kit build I did a couple of years ago, with the Gmade GF02F. Check that out here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eHp1t7ClprfIqJM.html (I wasn't as polished back then, as I was only a few months into making videos for youtube for the first time. But I still covered the suspension. It's cool, and I've wanted to try it again since then!)

So far the bolstered one is good. I left the breakage in as a demonstration of when you get the alignment or part design wrong. But the current part should be strong enough. I can next try printing in PA-HT or else I might try my own design in stainless, from shapeways. If there's a cheaper, metal option out there for this car and in stock, like this Boco mount (that I will now look into, thanks!) then yes, that's probably the best option!

I’d like to send you my modified servo mount, but can’t find your email listed anywhere. As per your request I don’t want to post it anywhere other than your website. The servo mount wasn’t able to survive my teenage sons driving, and Boco wasn’t willing to ship their mount to Canada. Instead I added material to your design and its now survived two of his outings. Previously it never made it through an outing. I made the area that bolts to the diff housing thicker. Where the tiny bolts go through, the mount stays the same thickness instead of slimming down. I also added material where large bolt goes through the mount. No problems so far! 🤞 Everything else has held up to his abuse and the truck is working amazingly well (better than my VFD carbon). Thanks again!

Ecto is a super solid choice. Ascent Fusion is definitely premium, but I think performance will be more limited by how busy it's front end is. I've tried hard to address that but you'll be able to take the Ecto further with mods. I won't print and send my designs. Vastly impractical for multiple reasons. I didn't include a sliced file - that would be a 3mf file for the Bambu. Just the model, which is an stl. You need to slice it yourself. That means adjusting the settings in the slicer to match my recommendations. However, you're printing in ABS, which changes things. I have zero experience with ABS so can't make suggestions to change the files. My print guide is for the filaments as listed. Bottom line, you may need to experiment a bit (ie. Print the same part a few times) until you're happy. Comes with the territory, really! Though you've made it very easy on yourself with the X1C. Hi Chris, you want 'Under-tray main spacer.stl' in the middle, with 'Full Length Tray Bracket LHS/RHS.stl' on each side of the chassis. Use either 4mm ro 5mm spacers from the 'Spacers.stl' file to get the shocks aligned parallel to the chassis and to each other. I haven't made time to write instructions with pictures but I've heard back from several folks so far who have got it built successfully, so I know all the parts are there. It's a bit of a tinkerer's project, this one, but you do have everything you need in the zip file to get this thing sorted. You could try laying it all out on the bench before you assemble the rear end, to help give yourself an idea of how it'll go together. Good luck with it!
