Reducing Fire Risk When Drying Wood in an Oven| AFO Fireball

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Drying wood out in an oven can be a big fire risk, so it's best to minimize the risk. In this video I share one of the ways I reduce fire risk when drying out wood in an oven, using the AFO Fireball fire extinguisher ball.

Definitely!! Glad to share it!! Curtis Seebeck at TurnTex turned me on to these, and I've been meaning to do a video but kept forgetting to get it done. Best to take every step you can to reduce or eliminate fire risks. Just remember, these will help to reduce it, but you will need to take further steps to get rid of the risk totally =D

Did not know about these Zac, but my shop is in my barn so definitely getting a few of these to put around. I have multiple extinguishers but these will add extra piece of mind. Thanks.

Great video! I had a blank I was curing catch fire last week! I had no idea that cactus juice would burn, but it did! Fortunately I caught the issue before there was any damage.

Kennett B Turned I’m sorry but where? Outside the cone of a cyclone dc system? I’m just thinking that a fire in my dc system will most likely start in the dust bin and so strike it at the source before it loses the containment of the dc bin. But others in the shop especially around the cyclone is added protection.

Dogwood Tales dust collection systems are vastly different between manufacturers and the DIY. I automatically was thinking the way my cyclone was set up in a 35 gal barrel. I was thinking this would go well right between the vacuum inlet and the dust inlet on the underside of the cover. I didn’t think about how others with a separate cyclone might work. Sorry about that! 😐

Not to be a wet blanket but ... this probably won't stop all fires. I'd think a smoldering fire may re-ignite. It won't turn off the heat source in a toaster oven for example. That being said I would definitely feel safer if these were around. -Mike

I agree, there's no guarantee it will stop a fire, but there is a chance it will put out a fire if one breaks out. I'd recommend taking further steps to ensure that if a fire does break out it can be somewhat contained and just go out as well

Thanks Zac.... what are your thoughts on using electric smokers instead of toaster ovens? I don't believe they run hotter than 250 degrees. I have been thinking about getting rid of the toaster replacing with a smoker.

  • @ZacHiggins

I think they are a smart choice because they hold a lot of wood without having to put it close to the elements. Unfortunately, my personal experience with them has been horrible so far. I've owned two, from two different brands. One was analog, one digital. Both went haywire after prolonged use with the temp going off the charts with an error message and then just dying. Based on my experience, I'm not convinced they are meant to be run at the temperatures we need for long periods of time. However, I know a lot of people who use them and have no problems. Luckily, my Dad has a large laboratory gravity oven that is perfect for drying lots of wood and baking cactus juice. It works great and holds a pretty stable temperature. So far, it is the best oven I know of, but they are ridiculously expensive. My Dad snagged it for next to nothing used, so if you can find a deal on one, snag it!

Zac, great video! I just bought the equipment to stabilize but am really nervous running a toaster oven for 24hrs since i have children in my house and would have to run it overnight. This might seem idiotic to experienced individuals but do you think a food dehydrator would dry food for stabilizing? Or an electric smoker i can leave outside? Thanks!

That's a fire bomb aka fire grenade. They have been around for over 100 years and are still as useful now as they were when invented. The best thing about them is that they are automatic, they will put the fire out for you
