How To Dry Fresh Cut Timber In A Microwave Oven (Yew Wood)

Yew wood is beautiful stuff. It’s not easy to use though, because the grain goes all over the place. We are looking for a buyer for the main trunk (or parts of it) and in the meantime we’re considering what we could do with it ourselves.
The first job is to dry it enough to work. It took an hour to microwave these 4 little planks to approximately 15% moisture content. Hardly a practical method for the whole tree, but just about possible for small jobs like boxes and jewellery.
We’d like to help Rosie and Mike find a way to fund the ongoing management of these lovely woods, so if you have any helpful ideas please share them with us.
Here's our online store where you can see these geese - and some other craft things we make and sell..

It's not necessary to make figurative objects. If you have pieces of beautiful wood, cut it into blocks or slabs or rounds, sand it down to a smooth surface to show the grain vividly, and finish lightly without changing the color insofar as possible. Or perhaps, leave unfinished yet smooth to the touch. I don't need a goose pendant (neither does anyone) but a heavy little block or slab, beautifully smooth and slightly fragrant, with clean square faces, is very attractive and admirable on its own. Just the wood itself, is magical.

Another method for drying wood and products without the formation of cracks. For him, using silica gel, is any moisture from the desiccant things including wood. Silica gel for cats take in stores, He comes in bags for cat. He'll use for drying hardwood. Take 1/3 of silica gel-sorbent from the weight of the tree, covered it with a wooden product and close the jar tightly, to accelerate the drying process is better to pump air and make vacuum. Subject jar tree in vacuum and silica gel (or without) a few days or week. If the tree is much wet, the silica gel which has absorbed water (become white) pour and add as much again, and just leave the silica gel to absorb moisture wood. at This method, wood is not impregnated with salt and keeps clean without salt structure, which may sometimes protrude from the tree over time. So go ahead dry the product with the help of silica gel. Restore silica gel- roasting or put in a microwave oven for 5 minutes, and It can be used again.

To work in wood (a bowl, a spoon or a statuette) and mode to another raw tree when the product is ready, it can give a crack, to crack it was never that place Wooden finished product in highly salted water and cook for about 1 to 4 hours. Basically hour missing. Thereafter, winding articles with old newspapers leaving for absorption of moisture from wood, changing every day at about 1 week. After this tree will never crack. Salt kicks inside the water and dries the fast wood, protecting it from cracking. The paradox, but it works and is used. Can not treated with a piece of wood to boil in salted water and then cut after drying newspapers or paper or cloth.

there's a thing called a moisture meter for just this sort of job. Google search? If you take out half the weight of your timber then you know that it contained 50% water in the beginning (at least), because that's the only thing you're removing.

  • @WayOutWestx2

+Rusty Case We're not sure whether there's enough straight trunk anywhere for that, RC. But we won't cut anything more till we have a plan. The porch is a bit rain-swept at the moment for scientific experimentation, but it's a useful machine so it'll have to find a permanent home somewhere. (I believe people even use them for food preparation!)

WayOutWest Blowinblog They are OK for warming food items, now and then. Long ago I learned how badly they can destroy a chunk of meat! lol I do know dedicated vegans who would not ever use one. They claim uncertainty at what the radar range may actually do to the nutritional value of food, having the cellular elements excited in such a fashion. They didn't even get to the point of possible escaping radio waves. Me? I dunno. Slow cooking is probably superior, if at all ??? rc

Whatever next! Always something interesting from youtwo! You do know how deadly toxic yew is, do yew? And you cleaned out the microwave meticulously? My son who is a bowyer, proclaimed yew's superlative qualities for bow-making. It is apparently very strong but elastic. Although if the grain "goes all over the place," that is hard to figure. But worth investigating?
