Reduced Engine Power Part 1 of 4 2000 to 2006 5.3 liter Chevy Tahoe

Спорт

How to bypass the two corroding grounding issues in the back of your 5.3 liter engine. See Part 2 for the passenger side. Easy peasy solution to the dreaded "Reduced Engine Power" issue on these. Do this first before you replace the throttle body and gas pedal sensor and the wire bundle connector at the throttle body. P1221 p1515 p1120 p1220 p0220 p1515 p2135
Also the bolt size for the new ground is M10-1.5x12

    I had a p1518 code / reduced power and I checked the ground wire at the rear of the engine block passenger side and it popped right off. I believe that was the problem. I cleaned all the other ones but I didn't know about that one until I watch this video .I will report back after I've reconnected and driven a while. Thanks!

    I just did the same to my 2008 HD an it also fixed the problem I had code P2135 .. thanks for taking the time to put this up.... all it cost me was a 24' grounding strap... I had 4 ground location and each one was corroded ..I cleaned them all.. and still installed the extra strap .. do not know which one fixed it but its working and I also note my Alt is charging higher so that is a double check that problem was grounding issues.. thanks again

    The steel, wires and connectors used on gm vehicles is a special alloy that has Alka seltzer in it. Slightest exposure to moisture melts and corodes them. I've only ever seen this happen on boats used in the ocean. Everything in these vehicles acts like they have been hit with salt water. That's American engineering/corporate thinking for you build it cheap as possible..

    Really good point. Looking under the hood just now, I can't think of a reason why not and it would be cleaner. Didn't think it through. Brain fog obviously. Passenger side ground needs to be grounded well and I would still be sure the engine block is grounded as well. If you do this with the thicker wire, it may take some finegaling to bolt it to the negative on the battery. There is not much room. I had to get a larger bolt for one of mine as it came loose. If you don't bolt it tight it will come loose and momentarily disconnect triggering "reduced engine power" as well. Thanks for addition. Need to make a better video now. :) Or you should make one to help others once u are done.

    So you hooked a ground to a ground?

  • @2009adtommy

    @2009adtommy

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes only because that large ground at the firewall is connected to the back of the engine which I can't reach to clean. Also the ground at the firewall was very corroded. So I grounded it to the front of the engine which I can reach. I even took a wire from the firewall to the ground at the battery for redundancy. Over kill I know but have not had a problem in 3 or 4 years. It is all about the grounds at the back of the engine, under the car under the drivers seat, the throttle body, gas pedal sensor and the wiring harness at the throttle body. I changed them all but what really did it was the grounds. The slightest variation cause a fault. I just had a reduced engine light come on and I was so annoyed and it turned out that the ground at the battery was loose. Grounds are the key.

    Brandon, what I have seen is this over the 17 years I have owned this car. It is either the throttle body, foot pedal sensor, the wiring bundle at the throttle body ( if you replace this, I can't express this enough, be sure to solder the connections - watch the other video ), or it is a ground issue at the 3 points of contact mentioned in here. The throttle body ( and don't just change the sensor - change the entire throttle body ) followed by ground issues tend to be the most often remedy. I am not a mechanic so proceed at your own risk and cost. I have been completely issue free since I made these videos. The only issue that came up is that I didn't solder the wiring bundle at the throttle body and it suddenly started happening again a lot. But every time i would wiggle the connections, it would stop. I soldered all connections then all has been well since.

I have already replaced the sensor at the gas pedal, new throttle body and the connector at the throttle body. I think the ground cable was the main issue. Check out the other video as there is another ground on the passenger side. The passenger side on mine didn't look corroded but I double grounded it also. Remember to remove the grounds on the chassis below the driver seat and brush it real well and reattached. Apparently the bottom of the car is sprayed first then they attach these grounds and hence often the ground is poor. Clean these off also and reattach.

    I am not sure what you are saying. there are two grounds coming from the back of the engine. Passenger side needs to be grounded to the engine. The other runs to the hood. You can also connect it directly to the ground on the battery. but there is more than one ground at the back of the hood. use the other ground so you dont have to buy anything. I then grounded the hood directly to the ground of the battery for good measure. Anyways, if you havent replaced the throttle body i would get that replaced also. dont buy cheap chinese though. This way you wont cry twice.
