Thank you for the information I breed Boston terriers and 4 years ago we had a cleft palate puppy and I was told not to breed that female anymore and haven't but my male have been used as a stud by myself and many other people and no cleft palates. But this last time my male was studied out there was one cleft palate puppy and the people found a rescue group to take him and tube feed tell he is old enough for surgery but now I'm getting nasty messages about how I'm a bad breeder. So thank you very much for the information

Hello! I am adding a female to our program who does NOT have a cleft but two litter mates did. Neither parent had clefts and neither did their parents (grandparents). Would this puppy have an increased risk of producing clefts if although she did not a litter mate did or is that a reach? Thanks for your input! Love your teaching!

I have given this to my girls as well for a few years now, surprised you were not aware of this before now....It also helps with the tails on breeds that have them. Stops bent tails. thanks for putting this out there, it is lacking in all of the foods for pregnant dogs, just like for women they need a lot more of it to support developing fetus.

My girl loves her folic acid. I gave my girl folic acid on her last pregnancy and she had 10 pups no cleft pallete pups. She's pregnant again and I'm giving her folic acid again so hopefully she doesn't have any again. X

I recently bred my female for the first time we did not use folic acid but will start doing that. We had 1 cleft pallet puppy. This is my question. If I breed him is it certain he will throw cleft pallets? What if I gave folic acid would that change the outcome? I have sold the puppies for pet only because of the possibility of throwing clefts and I don’t want that. I have 1 puppy left that is perfect that normally I would have kept in a heartbeat to breed, now listening to this I’m wondering if this is a game changer? Would you sell the puppy or keep it and try breeding him? Thank-you!

I breed boxers, I've had 2 litters with my current female...1st litter was 3/8 puppies with cleft lip and palate. Two passed but I was able to raise the remaining 1 successfully. Second litter changed stud and supplemented with 5mg human grade folic acid daily (but I don't think I started soon enough) and had 4/8 cleft lip and palate 😭 was able to succesfully raise 3 of the 4. They're now 6.5 months old and doing great. I've absolutely racked my brain trying to figure out why. Neither set of grandparents ever produced clefts and the stud hadn't until my litter. He's had more puppies since and all have been normal. I'm not sure how I've had such bad luck 😢

When you realize that 5mg is 5000mcg, the .4mcg is almost nothing

AWESOME information as always! We are currently giving our female a prenatal vitamin which has 30 mcg of Folic Acid. Will it be harmful if I add the 5mg folic acid

Same here and I gave the mom folic way before AI and puppy was still born with it

sir,iam from pakistan.boer breed is very few in pakistan.2 times a face cleft palate issue in my boxer breed. when i mate mother and son,can i use a nother dog of same breed because i have no boxer dog of other blood line in whole city .please guide me.

I'm 3 weeks after AI would you start the folic acid regardless till whelping time

Folic acid isn't folate. Does it cause genital malformation in canines like it does in humans?

My female had 4 pupps and 1 was born with cleft palate. Should I be concerned with both parents? I was given female bitch pill once a day
