ReDO: BMX Gate Start | Part 4

In this series I am dedicating time to rebuilding my BMX Gate Start technique from the ground up. This session we spend the entire time on a gate and take a couple that are worth slowing down. It even prompted a little Happy Gilmore action as I tap the gate a few times.

Some constructive criticism for ya. Gate starts can be broken down into different movements. Pull bars back, move hips forward, mash front pedal. They are distinctly different movements, but happen almost simultaneously by those that have them nailed. To me, it looks like your first motion is mashing the pedal. I say this, because your body moves up before going forward. Don't concentrate so much on mashing the pedal. Instead, make your first movement be pulling the bars back (not up, but back). Then hips forward. Then mash the pedal. If you watch pros or elites, their first movement is pulling the bars. They have it nailed, so it's very fluid. Keep in mind I'm no expert with gates, but I can see what's happening with yours. It's much easier to see what others aren't doing correctly than to do them correctly yourself. You'd be able to pick my gates apart as well. I will say that I love your determination and have no doubt you'll get it. Keep bringing us along on the journey, cause it helps all of us that are trying to get better gates.

Thanks for the insights and honesty. I completely get what you are saying and agree that my front foot has too much focus which causes me to go up. More time on the sprint block will help get it into my brain and you know there will be more videos along the journey. Thanks for being involved.

I bought the actual gate used from a friend, but you can purchase the gate at Freshpark. The light system is made by YellowCatBMX and is designed specifically to attach to this Freshpark gate. In the end this combination is the least expensive solution to a portable gate with magnetic release on a hardware based random gate setup.
