Useless trivia: The reason the wheels rode on the back plates was only to decrease friction (reducing surface area) to make them even faster. GREAT VIDEO!!

I agree I wish they made backing plates too. Your 3D printed ones work great! Maybe Hong Kong has spares at their factory? Redline looks so much better than the old original scheme. The chrome rocket motor is awesome!

I think this is how the designer thought it should look but then the bean counters came in and reality hit and the highly polished rocket just was not possible to make their profit. It’s amazing to think how a company can make such an item for children at that time and still be in business all these years later. Amazing toy then and another amazing restoration from you today.

This came out great! Love the color change and the polished booster. This was one of my favorite cars in my collection when I was a kid. It went on every mission. Mine was yellow and I still have it. I am so inspired by how far your restorations have developed! It gives me great ideas when I restore my Matchbox models - currently working on box art for the Matchbox models. Not just the main front image but for those boxes which had a side elevation of the model on the side flaps, an inset of a feature or the white line art. Looks great. Would love to see the your working headlights technique used for the rocket exhaust - drill out the nozzle for the LED, hide baters in the empty rear of the car and run wires up the rocket post. Keep up the great builds.

I love the new technique using the metal flake basecoat. Also, that Windex color is my favorite Spectraflame color. I'd have polished the engine as you did too. You're the best at this that I've seen on KZread. Marty does great things with Matchbox. But, when it comes to Redlines, you're the man.

Here's another hypotheis for you: The original wheels may have ridden on the "back plate" in order to make them roll better by significantly reducing the amount of tire touching the "road", reducing friction.

Outstanding work and finish! I never knew this one existed before but it looks good. I like the repo wheels , paint and polished jet engine. The technique of painting in silver then Spectraflame makes for a nicer finish I think. Thanks for sharing this neat tutorial.

Very nice finish, my parents had a 70' SS Chevelle the same shade of blue. I was almost convinced you pulled a sneaky and had the rocket chromed. I'd bet this would make an interesting mad max build 😂 cheers.

The back plates were larger because when on track they had less friction and the car ran faster down the track. beautiful job as always

You could always 3D print something to fit inside and close off the wheel wells. Your restorations are beautiful.

lol I actually thought of fully converting this back to the 1971 version.. I decided not to as it would take time to design the inside parts.

Outstanding work and finish! I never knew this one existed before but it looks good. I like the repo wheels , paint and polished jet engine. The technique of painting in silver then Spectraflame makes for a nicer finish I think. Thanks for sharing this neat tutorial.

Very nice finish, my parents had a 70' SS Chevelle the same shade of blue. I was almost convinced you pulled a sneaky and had the rocket chromed. I'd bet this would make an interesting mad max build 😂 cheers.

The back plates were larger because when on track they had less friction and the car ran faster down the track. beautiful job as always

It's cool watching you restore some beyond gone cars. Especially if the oxidation is horrible.
