1978 Millennium Falcon Restoration - Water Damage Restoration

Today I'm working on a 1978 Millennium Falcon that appears to have water damage. The shell had yellowed with age from UV light exposure. I reversed the yellowing with a process known as RetroBright. If you submerge the plastic parts in hydrogen peroxide and add powerful UV lights, it will reverse the yellowing.
May the force be with you!
Some of the items I used in the video:
New Stickers: ebay.us/XYfPAu
50W UV LED Lights: amzn.to/39ZjfE3
Hydrogen Peroxide: amzn.to/37HEn1K
Dremel Tool: amzn.to/2LRgkoV

I'm pretty sure whoever designed this toy in late '77 would be utterly flabbergasted to know that nearly 50 years later 3.5 million people would use technology beyond anyone's wildest dreams at the time to watch an expert restore it with the care due a fine work of art!

Uhh. Not sure the internet or digital video was beyond anyone's wildest dream in 1977. Computers were a thing. The internet existed in its very basic form. And digital videos existed in its early form already.

The things that broke for me where the blue cockpit control panel, one of the blue door supports, and I eventually lost the Jedi ball (whatever it’s called). Would have been pretty cool to have had the means to fix that stuff back then, in those days it was super glue, Elmers glue, cut up pieces of paper clip and rubber bands 😂😂.....anything we could do to try and make plastic “heal” lol.

They never got their hands on any of them but even now as an adult I really don't understand that logic of raiding a kids toy box to sell off their toys without their knowledge. I’m really impressed that, even before the restoration, the rear legs held up the weight of the Falcon. Other than the water damage and discolouration, that toy was really well looked after.

I'm impressed on a number of levels. First being able to find one that was intact with all it's components in any condition is no small feat, ESPECIALLY where all of the components still have maintained the stiffness and integrity of their functions. It was quite common for the landing gear to eventually not stay retracted in these toys. And it's amazing that the plastic hasn't dry rotted or oxidized to the point where it's as brittle as soda crackers. Second it's amazing that nothing broke when you took it apart. The plastic Kenner used to make those things was very cheap and given that this piece is probably over 40 years old it wouldn't be surprising in the least for pieces to get broken as it's disassembled. And that's to say nothing of stuck screws that either strip the plastic or the screwhead when attempting to remove them. With the evident water damage it's also surprising that the motor worked. And the decal replacement was probably better than anything most parents or children were able to achieve back in it's glory days. Which leads me to a couple of questions... Where were you able to find replacement stickers and cardboard? And how long is the time lapse for whitening the parts?

If you start replacing parts I’m simply not as interested and in some cases not interested at all. And I’m not even a serious collector. you know, for it being water damaged i expected the screws to be significantly rusty or in poor shape, but those babies came out cleaner than the rest of the falcon when it was still yellowed. thank you for these videos, they help me sleep at night. 🖤

Yeah, if I was offering to restore this for someone, I'd also offer to add in a soundboard for the button, and possibly headlights like the 1997 rerelease (I had that one as a kid. Easily my favorite childhood toy!).

@@paulkersey6283 That's actually not correct (I collect vintage) - Current market you can find a complete loose 1977 original Falcon for around $300. In box unopened would be thousands and they are hard to find.
