Also- in the lyric video, the first line is actually "Taking inventory of (my) his life" the 'my' is crossed out, almost as if he was intending to write about himself, but had to change it due to Dema censorship. My personal interpretation is that the first verse is about Tyler himself, and that lyric from Leave The City would definitely support it.

This song also reminds me of the warning signs for an incoming suicide. A person might out of no where be happy and cheery, they also might start giving away a lot of their possessions, even their money, a sort of wrapping things up so other people don’t have .

It resonates with me because I’ve been in that dark place before, and what made me ultimately decide to not do anything to myself is how it would effect the people in my life. what i love about this album is i feel its tyler, who is stuck in dema, tries to escape thru his mind rather than physically trying to escape. And that escape begins with an upbeat track with very a deep and emotional message behind it, "Good Day." And i think that is the thing about his mental escape during this album is that although he is disappearing away in his mind, a lot of these songs have deep or negative or kinda sad undertones to them, demonstrating that Dema and the bishops r like always there. And the last two songs "No Chances" and "Redecorate" are like him returning to reality almost and he is still in Dema. It's as if this whole album Tyler has tried to escape from Dema in his mind and yet Dema would never allow him to still fully escape!

To me, some of this song makes me think of will and testament. Wanting to clean his room (divvy up his belongings), wanting to redecorate - it’s like someone towards the end of their life is wondering how they’re leaving what they can’t take with them. And he doesn’t want his people “to make decisions,” it’s like when you are arranging a funeral it’s difficult to put something like that together while you’re still in mourning. I guess that sort of goes along with what Tyler said. Another thing about the blankets over the mirrors - I’m not Jewish and Ik Tyler isn’t either but I’ve heard that while they’re in mourning, they cover their mirrors. So the lyrics made me think of that. Maybe someone that knows better than me could give input?

That's really interesting about the mirrors. I did not now that. Also I find it interesting that in the stanza about the girl, Tyler almost hints to her being physically pretty ("She's not afraid of her reflection..." and "covers her dents with the way she decorates" possibly referring to makeup). But inside she feels lost and depressed. And unfortunately I think there are a lot of people out there who could probably relate.

with 'she had plans to change her name. just not the traditional way', i always thought it was about her running away from her life and literally changing her name. in a way, that's a death because she's leaving behind those who love her because she regrets a lot of the choices she's made and is afraid to face up to them.

The first verse is about Tyler. The lyrics said “my” but was crossed out. Also the “shadow always lived in the corner” and “flat on his back” = jumpsuit, “spirit’s in my room/feel it when I’m young feel it when I’m old.” And the music video visuals of him flat on his back.

  • @JLoStu42

That could’ve simply been Tyler choosing to write it in 3rd person for someone else. In an interview he said this song was inspired by his friends son passing away. I believe the first verse was being written from his perspective and is about him, just changed the view point.

I think in the second verse, the dents she decorates is not only metaphorical but actual. I believe it is referring to her self harming and covering it up with long sleeves and perhaps make up. She is clearly full of self doubt and seems suicidal, so when she finally tears off the blankets covering the mirror, she faces her self and comes to terms with the fact, if she keeps doing what she’s doing, she could die. And if she died, that would put all of her loved ones in situations she would never want to put them in and one she’d never want to be in. Maybe cleaning the room is literal but I propose it’s also metaphorical for cleaning up ones act and thus their life.

I don't know if you or anyone else will see this, but I want to give my two cents. This song hit different for me. How I interpreted it is similar to how you explained it, but instead of questioning and not being proud of what you leave behind, I found it to be about questioning and not being proud of what you are and what you've done when you leave. "I don't wanna go like this, at least let me clean my room" The speaker, realizing they're near, at, or becoming aware of death, looks back at their life, and considers their sins and shortcomings, for which they've never repented, assuming they're religious. They despair at these things that they believe make them evil and unworthy of God's grace and eternal life in paradise. They desperately pray for more time, time to apologize, time to make amends, time to forgive, time to repay, time to repent. Truly believing that they await an eternity of suffering after their passing, they desire more time in this world to improve themselves, to make themselves feel worthy. They want to undo their sins and shortcomings that they perceive to "stain" their life. They want to clean their room. "I don't wanna leave like this, cause the last thing I want to do is make my people make decisions, wondering want to do, oh, should they keep it on display, or redecorate?" Again, the speaker doesn't want to die as an "evil" person. I believe that if you have faith in God and believe that Jesus Christ is our savior and died to cleanse us of our sins, as well as truly letting both of them into your heart, you will be granted eternal life in paradise. However, I've found that despite this, it's easy to look back at your sins and feel evil, even though Jesus died to ensure you're forgiven. I'm forgiven, but I don't *feel* forgiven, so am I really forgiven? That question haunts me nearly every day, and I believe that second part of the chorus asks this question. I don't want my people, our Lord God and his son Jesus Christ, to have to decide whether I should be allowed into Heaven. If I sin, and I despair because of my sins, I don't want there to be a question, I want to be good, I want in. I don't want my sins, which I've been forgiven for, to be held against me. I don't want them on display. I want to repent for them, for them to be overwritten. I want God to "redecorate" my life, and see me for who I want and try to be. I believe the verses showcase people in situations like mine. That got pretty personal, and I'm sorry if reading it was a bit much. But that's what I think the song is about, and I love it for that. This is easily one of my favorite songs of the record, which is pretty uncommon among the final songs on TOP's albums. Thanks for reading, if you did.

Thought it was interesting how, on the lyric video, you can see some of the lyrics that Tyler scrapped. For instance, in the first verse, Tyler crossed out the lyric "Then he stared at the bottle" after the "orders from the corner" line. To me, this might suggest the man in the first verse and the last are the same person. Also thought it was interesting that the name of the song was originally going to be "Display" (you can see it crossed out in the top and "redecorate" written instead. It could just be that the chorus ends on the word "redecorate," but it's an interesting choice. The theory about the person being Tyler could also come from the fact that the first line was originally written in first person, and then changed to third as well. But I think I agree with you on that one! Amazing video, this is my favorite song on the album!

In the lyric video for the song at the "Taking inventory of his life" the word "his" was replacing the word "I" (and "I" was crossed out) potentially hinting at the first part was originally supposed to be about Tyler (or potentially Clancy) but decided to change it.

Idk, maybe I’m over-theorizing with the third version, but it makes me think of Clancy. The Banditos haven’t come for him, so he feels like an “isolated track” and DEMA tries to keep him sedated and inebriated. And the “he might’ve made it if he lived on a different street” made me immediately think of “Mulberry Street” which I took as the place where DEMA sedates their captives and keeps their “bliss”. I feel like it’s written as like either one of Clancy’s last days before “Clancy Is Dead” or “Scaled and Icy” which makes sense after “No Chances” and the whole plot line of “Trench”. Or it’s to show that Clancy is still alive, but only by a thread. But again, I might just be over-theorizing and your theory could be completely right.

I read on Reddit that dema had to push Clancy's death to be more obvious so that's during the bridge. I think that they had to push it more because Clancy escaped during the Livestream experience. I think that this is Clancy telling about his friends and then Tyler had to write the bridge because of the bishops

  • @alannacarlson6715

I feel that "Redecorate" is a continuation of Neon Gravestones in a certain way. In Neon Gravestones Tyler tells us "Promise me this, if I lose to myself, you won't mourn a day, and you move on to someone else" people interpret this in opposite ways. Some think he is saying don't JUST mourn me for a day and replace me. Others (including me) think he's saying, if I commit suicide, don't even mourn me. I think this meaning makes more sense in the context of the song, because it's about not glorifying people after they commit suicide. So, with that interpretation, we then get "Redecorate." In the context of this song, *redecorating* is taking action to MOVE ON from someone's death. The chorus says "The last thing I want to do is make *'my people'* make decisions..." Now, Tyler has shouted at us in concerts that we are his "people." In the line "never asked permission he just hopes that they forgive," I think the "they" is referring to his "people." So, Tyler very purposely chose REDECORATE as the title of this song, and I don't think it's just a title, I think it's a command (for lack of a better term). I think that "Redecorate" means "Move on" and I think Tyler is saying, "If I lose to myself, don't mourn. Move on, redecorate." And honestly, I hate that. haha

Hey, Clifford, I don't know if this has been said before, (and I apologize in advance if it has), but the voice that says "There was wonderful structure to the city, and it put my cares to rest." in Redecorate is the same voice that says "So where are you? It's been a little while." in Chlorine. I'm not sure how/why this is significant, but at least it's something cool to note.

I strongly believe Tyler is the character in the end verse and chorus. Scaled back and Isolated includes being stuck because of covid, but TØP said they want songs that don’t just apply to now. It means staying back from making choices, especially difficult ones. And when it says, take a breath before you go into his room, I think it has to do with fire. I believe Tyler refers to Fire breathing as a term for rapping or just creating lit refrains with voice (Levitate). And you can’t breathe in a burning building because of both smoke and the heat consuming the oxygen. So it may be a reference to family wanting to see Tyler but he’s stuck in his studio fire breathing and should not be interrupted because you’d choke if you entered. This plays on the idea of Saturday when Jenna beckons him.

for me the collecting and decorating things sound like a metaphor for the way you are. for example "she covers all the dents with the way she decorates" = covering scars or simply her face with make up, because she's insecure and afraid what people might think of her real self. I like this song a lot. it kinda helped me in a way, by telling me "I don't want to continue to live like this, soI should change myself" which is something important, given, that I barely moved on from past stuggles for years, but at some point you have to start walking, no matter how scary it is, or you might loose everything. I want to redecorate my mind, to make it less selfdestructive and chaotic, but not in a way where I try to hide my struggles, but learn to accept and live with them w/o hurting those around me unintentionally. it's fascinating how this song can be interpreted so sad and at the same time so hopeful

I understand that the chorus applies to all the individuals in the song, but I feel like each chorus is attached to its verse character respectively. Like Tyler is singing from their perspective and in the bridge and final chorus, I feel he is singing about himself. From the song chlorine we discovered his relationship with song writing was very much like dependence on a drug. It gives him his fix but it also damages him. So, he spends most days inebriated would mean he spends his time writing and in his creative process. We see from the song Saturday he is missing out on family things because of his music, when Jenna says she’s going to bed and he should act on his inspiration. I think this song is full of coming to terms, including Tyler. He realizes he doesn’t want to die in his studio, he wants to live with his loved ones. He must choose to either abandon dema or be it’s prisoner, but his time is limited.

I can see where the song would be about death in general (and maybe lifestyles which speed a person towards death). Over the last year, I’ve had a couple experiences which kind of color the song meaning for me. Two of my family members got cancer, and the question came up for them, “I don’t want to leave my family with so much stuff to sort through, what do we do?” So, I feel a kind of self-reflective quality to the song. Also, this is going to sound weird, but I get a dark, but hopeful vibe from the song. Last year I was in a really bad place in life. I had a close brush with death, and “I don’t want to go like this” was exactly what I said during that experience. All I saw around my room was unfinished business, and all I could think about were the people I’d hurt if I died. That encounter with death actually saved my life, because it was the motivating force for me to turn my life around. The way the line “I don’t want to go like this” is emphasized, to me feels like a breaking point/realization. Maybe the cleaning of their room could be taken metaphorically, “how do I clean up my life, turn it around, before it’s too late?”

The part about the inebriation, directives from a corner, etc. Kind of sounds reminiscent of 1984. Feeling less trapped when inebriated=victory gin, the directives from the corner=that weird talking tv, and the people being fairly sedated just generally sounds like how big brother and his government made the people less able and willing to revolt. Coincidence? Idk probably. Also, the part where he's sedated most days of the week must be talking about how saturday it better than all the other days.

anyone else notice how in the last verse when he says "like an isolated track and he feels trapped..." it kinda sounds like he says "dragon" in the way he says "track and"? so if this was intentional and he's talking about trash the dragon and what it represents in this verse, trash what is isolated and feels trapped when hes not inebriated. might be totally off here but i remember noticing that and it made me think about the song kinda differently and how it relates to the album as a whole, also just kinda cool how its like the outro to the album and he wraps it all up with this weird cryptic reference to trash. just random thoughts 🤷🏻‍♂️

here to apply much to the deep meaning of Redecorate, people with depression tend to have a " depression cave/ depression den" which is their room but due to their depression have fallen into a chaotic hole of piles of their belongings. which I feel if people are close to suicide the chorus's meaning is them saying that they are gonna clean up their depression den so that when they are found or when their relatives come to their house or enter their room they won't see how bad it truly was.

First... thank you for all of your explanations on the new album. Has given me a lot of insight and has also reaffirmed some thoughts that I had on a couple of songs. One of which, being this song. I thought it was about death/suicide. I thought it was about 3 different people, verse 1 a male, 2nd verse a female and the 3rd verse was about Tyler himself. His way of letting people know that he can relate to what they are going through because he has the same thoughts and feelings at times. Looking forward to hearing your explanation on Bounce Man. I have a theory about that song but I will wait to hear yours Haha. Thank you, again!

The first part of the song actually makes me remember tyler on the nico and the niners video, when we see he getting ready to leave dema. Then thinking about this it makes me feel like the song is not about just suicide, but leaving and hurting the people you leave behind. I have had the experience before of having someone next to me take the decision of leaving for some time because that person wanted some time for herself. I was so sad at the time because I knew that leaving like that was hard, but staying was impossible, and I could see in her behaviour that she didn't want to leave something behind that would bother me. After this I started to think more about how hard it is to leave a place or a situation, mainly our family, and then we endup thinking about the things that belonged to us that we could not bring with us. This song is so strong for me because it brings the exact same feeling and its sometimes painful to listen to. Twenty one pilots once again delivers an amazing song that makes us think about it and unconsciously about our life.

Redecorate combined with No Chances sounds like the Bishops performing a home invasion to me. I looked through the whole comments section and didn’t see anyone put out this theory so I’ll go in depth, here we go. I’ll start with parts of No Chances, but I’ll cover Redecorate. I’ve seen these takes on No Chances but not combined with Redecorate like I have. “We come for you, no chances” the Bishops are invading, there’s no escape. “We want you home in one piece now” the Bishops saying last chance, obey and we’ll leave you alone, if not, re-education. “How’d you get the location? Put together pieces? They say they sell the information in those terms of agreement” a Bandito who has been discovered as a resistor has not been careful enough to conceal his location by using technology that is mining his information and selling it to Dema. “Run away, run away” Banditos in the vicinity are escaping. On to Redecorate. My take is that this actually occurs immediately before No Chances and is a story of Banditos hiding their illegal belongings. “Something told him he should look around and tidy up” He has intuition that he’s about to be discovered, he looks around, sees the Bishops coming and begins to hide his illegal possessions. “He collected many things but never quite enough.” He bought many things to attempt to hide the fact that he is a Bandito but he was still discovered. He hides his illegals behind his Dema propaganda material or government distributed goods. “Tried lookin’ at it from a new perspective” He’s frantic to make sure everything is hidden, looking at his home from every angle. “Never asked permission, he just hopes that they forgive” His last weak hope is that they’ll spare him. That’s my theory on the first verse, there’s definitely more in the second and third, but in case nobody reads this I won’t write them out unless asked to. Here’s the chorus though. “I don’t want to go like this” He would rather be caught in the open to make a display of the Bishops’ cruelty, but mostly the feeling of not wanting to be taken at all. “At least let me clean my room” He desperately hopes they won’t make it to the door before he’s done cleaning. “I don’t want to leave like this” Repetition of the first line. “Cause the last thing I want to do is make my people make decisions, wondering what to do” He wants to not be taken so he can be there for the other Banditos, so they won’t have to decide who will fill his role in the community. Or that something he owns will give his friends locations and they would have to decide to handle their own situations. “Should they keep it on display or redecorate?” Should the Banditos even be hiding at all? Should they go out with no fear for the cause they believe in, or should they hide it from the Bishops in hopes to continue helping the people of Dema. Long read! Hope you enjoyed though! If you made it this far thank you so much, comment if you want my takes on verse two and three. Have an awesome day/week/month/year/decade/life.

i think that the "she had plans to change her name, just not the traditional way" is more something about a restart. Changing your name, changing who you are and start again. Making other choices, being someone else in general. it can help, maybe... Maybe the demons are gone or maybe there's other demons but, it's still a restart, it's a new you and the hope that can come with the new name, is definitely something. But as said in the song, she had plans so the hope is gone

The "non the traditional" way the girl wants to change her name could be from a female name to a male one. At least, that was the first thing that came in my mind the first time I heard Redecorate. It isn't that important for the meaning of the whole song, but it isn't unlikely that Tyler could have mentioned this topic (transsexuality, homosexuality), knowing that in the last year or so there has been quite a big debate and controversy about it.

In fact, this whole section reminds me of struggles my 11 year old has had. “Covers all the dents with the way she decorates” meaning she wears long sleeves and hoodies to cover scars from cutting. And plans to change her name - saying she doesn’t feel like a girl, and sometimes gives herself nicknames that are more gender neutral. I can’t listen to this song and not lose it - Thankful for Tyler for these lyrics, but hate how this song ends feeling so hopeless and incomplete 💔

I think that this song can actually explain many things about SAI in general, u know, 'Cause he startes it with "Good Day" which is about running from ur problems, but this song proves that there's no "high road" u should face ur problems and go through "Trench", but he expresses that he's tired so he wonders weather he should keep those problems on desplay, or redecorate them. So he tries to do second one and that's what the whole album is all about, but in the end of a day problems stay where they are, it doesn't matter what kind of paint u put on them, it proves u're just laying to urself. That's why this album is considered as DEMA propaganda. Eventually in the end of the album, especially with "Redecorate" Tyler understands that he's just lying to himself and imagining that Depression, insecurities, suicidal thoughts... are gone ain't actually gonna make them go, it's just redecorating problems, but in this way or that, they just stay where day are unless u fight them, like it's probably portrated in "No Chances"

Also when Tyler sings: "Blankets over mirrors, she tends to like it She's not afraid of her reflection But of what she might see behind it" I think he means, that she can't face her problems and who she really is, so this person tries to run from her dark side and problems but she's unable to do so, because she has to give up something, in this case "blankets", but she gets "cold" as the time passes, therefore to survive this person should grab her "blankets", but eventually she sees inthe mirror what she's afraid of and she's not ready 'cause she's been running from herself all this time

I know it’s different but because the album cover is in the colours of transgender flag, the second story could be about experience od transgender woman. - „Blankets over mirrors, she tends to like it” good way of dealing with dysphoria and self hatred. - „She's not afraid of her reflection, But of what she might see behind it” - for me it’s about the parts of herself that remind her of the past and the aspects of her look that people consider masculine, therefore invalidating her identity. Parts that she might not necessarily be against but feels like she should. - „She had plans to change her name. Just not the traditional way” - coming out, transition and legally changing your name and gender marker. - „She covers all the dents with the way she decorates” - could be refering to the way she dresses to make her feminine feature stend out and to cover the ones giving her dysphoria. I’m confused about the blankets. Like I associate blankets with warmth, so here can be a referance to the idea of hiding her identity to keep some people close to her, even if it means represing her true self and pretending. Just my interpretation tho, and more of a gut feeling that is hard to explain.

I think the bridge is about Tyler and the inebriation is referencing music the same way car radio does. and the different street references mulberry street which is used to describe a place to get your saturation. but more importantly I think the chorus speaks of an impossibility that Tyler feels. It’s almost impossible at this point that he loses this game of life because it’s not his decision to lose anymore. He has people around him that not only rely and depend on him but now it’s impossible for him to entertain the idea of making them have to redecorate his room. I believe it’s a situation where, even if I lose, I have won regardless.

Specifically the someone who changes their name in the less traditional way part of the song. I think it also feeds into the image illustrations of this part of the song. The trans person may not like who they see in the mirror because the image doesn’t reflect the person they see on the inside. I could be wrong but that is where my mind went. When Tyler sings “I don’t want to go like this, at least let me clean my room” I first thought of someone thinking “I’m not ready to die, I need to get my mind & heart right and become more of the person I want to be” i.e. clean my room

For the line "she had plans to change her name, just not the traditional way" I think "name" in this context isn't used to mean a literal name. I think it's used in the way that we "make a name for ourselves," like forming your own identity. Instead of forming her identity in a traditional way, she is choosing to end her own life (and thereby, her identity is "changed" in that she no longer has one.) Hopefully, that makes sense! I think the female character is either a mom or a lover of the person who has committed suicide. She keeps the mirror covered because she fears that by looking in the mirror she will see his reflection. She’s not ready to see his face again, even though she might want to. When someone dies on the one hand you desperately want some signs to show that your loved ones are “still there” with you. But on the other hand you’re scared that this will happen because it would make you suffer even more so you avoid everything that brings you closer to them...

the cliffhanger that the last verse ends on makes me think it might be about Clancy, although I admit a lot the verse includes context that isn’t included in Clancy’s letters

Do you know where we can find the notes that "clancy" has written?

Tyler uses two pronouns He and She. I wonder if this is a call back to the kids in the Nico and the Niners video. They plan to leave the city, but are worried about their families. Redecorating might also be replacing violism. Also, we'll win but not everyone will get out. So, maybe that last person is tyler not making it out, and that is why we hear it in third person. Or it could be clancy as well.

here are my thoughts on some of the lyrics (tw suicide, self harm): "she had plans to change her name, just not the traditional way" might be a biblical reference to revelations 2:17, which says we'll receive a new name when we die. and "she covers all the dents with the way she decorates" sounds to me like an euphemism for hiding self harm scars with clothing, makeup etc also, assuming the former is correct, "haunted by a couple big mistakes" could refer to previous suicide attempt(s?) or, to be even more precise, the two long scars someone would have in their forearms if they tried to commit suicide by cutting themselves. i've also heard a theory about the second verse being about a trans girl, which would fit well both with the lines about her reflection in the mirror(gender dysphoria) and the change of names. i like this one, tho i feel like it is a bit too specific.

I always thought that maybe changing her name in a non-traditional way was referring as a trans individual changing their name to align with the gender they align with

Anyone else feels that this song is kinda too incomplete to be the last song on the album? I mean compared to other final tracks on other TOP albums, this one doesn’t give that sense of completion. Also at the end, the song does trail for a bit before ending, just like Jumpsuit did, which makes me feel that there are 2-3 more songs on the way.

It isn’t an album wrap up anywhere near what the other albums are. But it might be hinting towards something next for the future.

I believe Tyler has said before that he plans on continuing the whole story of the Trench album, and that "Redecorate" is a taste of that, a reminder to the fans that there's still a story he's going to tell. I think it may be intentional that it feels like there should be more, and if it is, it makes a lot of sense.
