    The main issue with gay stories before Love Simon - either mainstream or not - is that they were invariably SO sad. Indie movies think a happy ending is not arty or something. Sometimes, we just want everything to work out.

    I think Galitzine nailed his roles both in this film and in the Purple Hearts. This one leans left and the other right, and neither films are perfect, but he’s giving nuanced performances in both. If you rewatch RWRB, you’ll notice the differences between the rigid HRH Henry’s outward appearance and stance, and the more emotional Henry Fox, which is visible in the eyes only. That’s very hard to do. The casting was brilliant because it nails the two characters. And Zahra may be queen, but Nora will be the next Madame President. Rachel Hilson is my favorite in this one; you forget it’s romcom cheese when she’s in the scene.

  • @chatterbox11

    @chatterbox11

    9 ай бұрын

    The director, Matthew Lopez, gave an interview, and he is the reason she had that accent. Uma came to him because she was uncertain of the accent and thought it was not working, and he told her to go for it. He said then after he saw her doing the scenes, he really loved it. He said she had a dialect coach, so she could have done a Texan hill-country accent if directed. I inferred from his remarks that since he had *UMA THURMAN* he thought a sultry Deep South accent (i.e. Georgian or Mississippian) was a better fit, regardless of where her character was supposed to be from.

    @@PokhrajRoy. Yes, it is definitely closer to Dixie Carter playing Julia Sugarbaker than Holland Taylor playing Ann Richards. But, a Julia Sugarbaker-type firebrand is always appropriate for an LGBTQ+ film!

    Basically because the US have American football that they call football but in the UK they have football but it is completely different, where feet and goals are used, however the UK has a sport called rugby that is more like American Football. I think he’s saying he now understands the difference between rugby and football because ppl from the US think of football like American Football that is more like rugby. I have no idea if that made sense I don’t even know if that’s what that line meant😭

I feel like pieces were missing, we didn't really get to delve into the characters and why they are how they are, their past, etc. It felt very fast paced in the beginning....buttttt I still thought it was a cute movie overall. Something I find interesting with white writers trying to write for other ethnicities or races is they put in the message of: "representation is someone who looks like me in positions of power", but like, not really? To me representation is someone with my best interest in positions of power, that cares about the group they are supposed to be representing; at least in politics optics should not cut it.
