Red whiskered Bulbul | Life during a Lockdown | Earth Day Special

Фильм және анимация

A life story of Red Whiskered Bulbul, as seen from our balcony during Covid19 lockdown.
We caused no kind of stress to these birds, since all footage was mostly candid and shot from inside the house through a mesh door. Egg/hatching shots were taken when both parents were away.
We respect animals as any living being and give them their space. This is also a reason why it chose to build a nest in our balcony.
In fact we refrained from even going out on the last day (though we need to access our balcony on a daily basis), since the birds were over-protective.
This was filmed not for fun but to share the beauty of new life and how it doesn't matter whether its a bird or a human, the joy of new life is priceless.

    Very same thing happened with me. It's important to note that once they left nest, they don't come back to nest. I felt sad that they didn't come back. I kept watch on them. They were moving here and there but don't come back. Second time they gave birth to 3 babies, but they abandoned 1 baby. I tried to make catch their attention to that 1 baby. But parents didn't care and finally that 1 died. I tried to survive it by providing food but that didn't survive.

    Our baby bulbul was the weaker one among three siblings and was found in cellar after its first flight. Hope other two made it safe. Now, bulbul is 15 days old and staying with us. Our 10 yr old son takes good care of him. He is falling short of hunting bugs, worms for the chick.. we feed him boiled egg, fruits, chicken, honey, bread. Any advise please if we could add variety to his diet?

    Little bulbul babies... Bulbuls made a nest in the plant in my room.They actually trusted us.. We even touched little babies in front of parents earlier but now we could not enter the area. Parents are coming to charge on us. I was a bit afraid about the change in their behaviour. But after this video I get to know that it is their common behaviour at around this time of baby's growth. At first 3 babies were present. After 2 days we found only 2.

    There were three bulbul chicks in my house. One day the one of them fell down and we put the chick in the nest in front of the mother bird. After 10 min she pushed a chick again but fortunately it was on a cloth, not on the floor. I kept that chick for one day and next day when mother bird was not there I kept it in the nest. When I was keeping the chick in the nest I noticed that there were only one chick , second chick was missing. Now there were two chicks in the nest. Next day I found dead body of the chick( who was missing) on the roof. I was surprised because chick was too small to fly. So this time when I put the fallen chick in the nest ,mother bird accepted it. After 3-4 day both chicks started learning how to fly. I was very carefull that any crow or kite or cat didn't eat them. Mother bird was very comfortable even when I took both chicks in my hand in front of them. Generally bird are very aggressive when they teaches their chicks how to fly. Mother bird and other 4 bulbul birds were teaching both chicks how to fly. But after some minutes I saw only one chick with them. I searched everywhere but didnot find the chick.perhaps that one flew in another direction because there were no cat or crow near the floor. I hope the lost chick got reunited with her mom! I saw the one chick learning how to fly and after 1 hour the chick flew away with mother birds. I want to ask that is it possible that a bulbul can kill the chicks of other bulbul... Because I think that the one chick who get lost, was killed by other bulbul bird as I saw that they were attacking on the chicks. (I don't know it was attack or any techenique to teach them how to fly!)

  • @Fstopro

    @Fstopro

    Hey Shradha, thank you for this write up, it's good to know different bird stories. It is normal for the mama bird to discard one of it's chicks (Natural Selection). If you see any chick on the floor, it's not by an accident. Normally, the bulbul nests can accommodate only two growing chicks. It's very unlikely for the other bulbul birds to attack and kill the chicks. It can't even be a predatory bird coz it would have consumed the chick, not just kill and leave the body. My guess, it's the mama bird who disposed the other chick on the roof. Of course they can't carry a grown chick, so am guessing it must be during early days. Even in my video, the mama bird disposed one of the 3 chicks and I didn't find the body anywhere in the vicinity.

    I wish I saw this vdo 2 months ago. I found a bulbul chick (probably aged 10 days if matches this vdo). I gained attention of the parents and kept the chick on the balcony. Parents came in turn and fed the chick. Tried to take it out, but it couldn't fly then, only small jumps. For the next three/four days it kept jumping higher and higher and one day it jumped and took a short flight to the grill. I felt it wasn't good enough and if it falls down then it'll be eaten by the cats below. Also it was raining heavily for some days and there was flood water around. So I tied a knot on its leg out of its safety concerns. Now I understand, it was a big mistake. It's still with us. The parents fed for about 1.5 weeks more. Then stopped feeding but still visited. Then slowly stopped coming. I still see them sometimes around. It probably has one sibling that I saw few days back. I trained it to fly. It can fly if it wants. Today it learned to self feed. I want to release it soon. But, It grew on me, basically became my child and I really love it now. I don't know if I can gain the strength to let it go in the wild knowing it probably won't survive. It didn't learn wild survival techniques. I don't know what I'll do. ☹️

As these red bulbul made so much times their nest and usually they are coming in my lawn son I observed there behavior very closely.. and once I also tried to take chick in my finger ( as there was evening time and still one chick could not fly properly so I took it on my finger and placed it on the plant ) at that time the parents were there but they just make one alert sound but they didn't attack on me . And in the morning I tried to help that cute chick in flying by placing it on the rope on some height at that time also parents just did some alert... and as I placed that baby .. one parent came and make that chick able to fly by several practice ... so you can help in some emergency situation you can help chick's... but be gentle , touch them in only emergency situation ,otherwise let the chick try :) to explore . Thanks friend

    Thank you for your comment and watching the video :) 1. These birds lay eggs at my place every year and I know they get defensive when their chicks start to fly. I don't have any reflecting surface as you mentioned. It's a mesh door, not a glass one. So they were indeed in attacking mode warning me to stay away. 2. I don't think we should touch the chicks and interfere with their natural process. Whether the chicks make it or not, it's left to nature :)

    Few days ago the same happened. Wish I had seen this video. The second baby bird was weak and it just sat on floor . It just won't fly. I thought maybe if I open the gate completely it will. As cats frequent my place I thought I will just sit after opening gate just to keep an eye. As soon as I approached to open gate it just flew out ..And it happened so suddenly. It could barely fly long distance and settled on grass.. I stood guard and then I just went inside for a few seconds and when I returned it wasn't there and I could see two kite/hawks flying low and the father and mother bulbul chasing it. Now I can't know for sure if it died or they ate it or it survived😭😭 Makes me feel responsible though Update: I see a new pair of eggs in the same nest and mommy bulbul is taking care of it.
