Red Faction's Revolutionary Design Lineage

Ойындар

explosion sound effect
Hello it's me, "hasn't reviewed a shooter since 2019" here, and I'm expanding the language I use to review games by looking at a genre I don't often touch - FPS. Except I cheated: Red Faction began as a shooter that was broadly compared to Half Life. Even if it had revolutionary ideas - GeoMod for one, and expansive gameplay for another - the series eventually veered into third person shooter territory. It's seen linear corridors and open worlds, explosions, gunshots, and hammers. Red Faction kinda owns.
If you're wondering what inspired this video, it's Guerilla. I loved that game, and really, I don't know how you can't. Interactivity gets little downplayed in the interactive medium from time to time, and Guerilla was 1000% interactive. It's the very essence of video games. So looking into Red Faction 1 and its GeoMod, Red Faction 2 and its... relative lack of GeoMod, and Armageddon with the Magnet Gun was a fascinating mechanical exploration. I've heard good things about Volition's other major series Saints Row and the Just Cause games, so maybe on another calendar year when I'm not totally strung up with responsibility.
If you hear the one word I failed to censor, no you didn't. And if you really actually did though, hey thanks, means a lot to me.
If you'd like to support the show, find me on patreon here: / kbash

I too sometimes think of the enemy soldier, who is trained and has lived their whole lives, up until the point they run into the protagonist and get domed in a fraction of a second.

If you 100%-ed Guerilla in under 20 hours, then you didn't really 100% it. Even on the easiest setting, it will take you more than 50.

The *Reconstructor* weapon which you so praise in the *Armageddon* section of this review *is actually present in GUERILLA as well* ... You just have to beat the game's main story / mission line to obtain it from the *Weapons table* ! :)

The first game has a crazy amount of hidden stuff if you are willing to blow a ton of stuff up. You can actually make an entire section of a level collapse if you have enough ammo, killing everything on that section of the level.

I love the weird rollercoaster of tone and quality that was Red Faction. The first one is still by far my favorite. That last game really killed the franchise though because it was so genetic compared to the previous 3 games.

The mission titled: Start Your Engines for Guerrilla is possibly my favorite video game level/mission of all time. It’s pretty early on in the game. Cars are smashing into you, flying over your head, the clock is ticking, your allies are yelling at you on the comms, your vehicle is breaking apart. All the while, you’re crashing into these towers at top speed. I still think of it fondly every time anyone talks about Red Faction.

Never thought I’d see anybody talk about the OG Red Faction and RF2 - awesome! I loved these games as a kid! Two of my favorites on PS2. Weirdly, I actually have a lot more positive memories of 2 than I do of 1, but all because of the multiplayer, which I largely played by myself. I remember it had this really cool feature where you could create bots to fight against, and as they did more matches and killed more enemies, you could increase their stats and they would progressively get more skilled. So I’d spend hours just playing and training alongside a couple of bots I’d built up just to see if I could stand up to them by myself once they’d reached their peak ability.

Fun fact, John Romero also worked on 2005's Area 51 FPS game too for Midway. As for Red Faction, I only liked the 1st game. Well, at least until the mercenaries are introduced...Music is great though. Man 2001 was a great year for FPS games: Halo CE, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Aliens Vs Predator 2, Red Faction, Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon. Speaking of AVP, might make for a good review video considering the 1st FPS released on Atari Jaguar and we haven't had a new one since 2010's. And wait, 2001 FPS games are considered "boomer" shooters now too?

I really hate people who complain about linear games. Some of the best experiences I've had in video games were linear ones, hell even the best parts of some open world games are linear set pieces the game pulls you from the world to take part in. I love a good sandbox but that's not all anyone wants from games, a linear experience is one that can be tailored and constructed into something truly specially because the devs have more control over the player in a linear setting.

It’s a shame Volition never used GeoMod in Saints Row, and it’s really stupid the reason they didn’t was because they thought people would think it looked bad. I remember playing the second game back when it came out. The GeoMod stuff in the first game was the reason to play that game, it was the selling point of that game that got talked up every time Red Faction was mentioned...so it was very odd they scaled that back to the degree they did. You go in expecting it to be even crazier than the first, only to be disappointed they pulled back on the whole selling point of Red Faction. I have to imagine the only reason Red Faction: Guerrilla shifted to third person was because, by the time they started it on, Saints Row was what they were known for.

*EXCELLENT* material there, man! Haven't played Armageddon, so can't comment on that, but otherwise your dissections of each of the other games were *(almost)* spot on! . Now, I *do take issue* with one particular segment of your review, however... Namely, your *criticisms* of some of *Guerilla's story aspects.* They are misguided. Bear with me: ... The game only took 2 - 2.5 years *(reportedly...)* to develop... *AT MOST...* By any means and standards, that's *NOT MUCH TIME* for a game of RF:G's calibre. If we have to be perfectly fair, what they actually managed to put out for that time period, as measured by the amount of in-game content is already *exceeding expectations* . The game's *BIG* , offers *A LOT* of various means of fun gameplay and enjoyment *(which you were kind enough to fully elaborate! :) )* , and has a satisfyingly and sufficiently long story arc. For the amount of development time, especially for back in those days, that was *HUGE.* ... And now, going back to that remark about the story... It just so happened that *THE LORE* had to take on the unfortunate role of *"that-ONE-thing-that-HAS-to-be- RUSHED / CUT / SACRIFICED"* , in order to actually *complete the game on time!* As a result, we end up with a story and participating characters that are *NOWHERE-near completely fleshed out and finalized* , due to said *time / development constraints.* As a result, we end up with *some* plot points that don't *(seem to)* make sense, *ESPECIALLY if you're primarly focused on the game's MANY other, and MORE attractive aspects... :)* ... And now here's the key moment: They don't *"seem to"* make sense, but ... *they actually DO* ... *IF you follow* the thread CLOSELY and read up on the lore within the Guerilla Handbook. (no, you *don't even need the wiki* ...) The *"marauders thingy doo-doo"* that you lament also happens to fall within this category of *"woah, woah, woah... wait... WHAT?"* aspects of the story. ... *MY take?* It all actually *made perfect sense* to me, and *I even anticipated it* to some degree. I *loved it* , actually! :) It just *fit* snugly within the narrative, especially combined with the chain of events that transpired in the previous games. But, like I already said, I was trying to really get *immersed* into the entire story + atmosphere + narrative, so I was able to *get* it. . Personally I *could* criticize *other* aspects of the story and gameplay/missions progression, but *I'd rather NOT...* .. BECAUSE : 1) Game is awesome as it is, and a rare gem that deserves *(almost)* only glory and praise! 2) As already said, I recognize that whatever errors there are in the game, they are *(almost)* entirely due to rushing / lack of time on the devs' part. .

Kinda interesting how Volition's most notable works started somewhat grounded and both kept ramping up and getting less and less serious until their very last entries had absolutely nothing to do with the original concept. Saints Row 4 isn't about gangs at all (GoH is a spinoff also without gangs and the reboot isn't connected to the original series so I'm not counting them), and the revolution has been over for a while by the time Red Faction Armageddon starts.

that would be *murder*. Idk if kbash has ever played a Monster Hunter, but unless the guy exclusively plays the village quests in every title (which while fun does not provide a good impression of what the titles strengths and systems are) that’s a good 200-400 hours *per entry*. This is coming from the guy who’s actually put at least 100 hours into every entry (except Frontier) each title is a full summer’s commitment if you actually want to see what’s up. Considering how some of his videos on JRPGs have turned out recently, specifically with the long, grindy play times cutting into his actual income by not letting him produce videos in a timely manor and ultimately cutting into the quality of his criticisms, it would be a really bad idea.

Ah I beat Red Faction 1 for the first time two weeks ago (and a week ago). Right off the bat I used a mod to make nearly the whole game destructible and one to rebalance (AllGeo and Reaper Balance 2.0) and I just loved it! I think it was intended to always work that way based on how much I could flank with it. I loved it enough to immediately play through it again on hard! The whole game felt good and it felt very rewarding to use terrain destruction to carefully open up sniper angles at tough parts and to have to worry about enemies with explosives of their own tearing apart the environment. The risk of getting stuck in holes you can't escape felt fair enough with all the autosaves and quicksaving. Even tricking the AI to get like stuck in holes felt good since they could still shoot me if I wasn't careful and it cost explosive resources I could use elsewhere to do it. Definitely had to keep back up saves though, I found autosaves to break at a couple points.

I genuinely appreciate your willingness to take a look at more obscure works of the video game medium. Like shit dude, who else in 2023 is taking time to make a dedicated review of the Red Faction series? You cover a pretty broad range of genres and always have worthwhile commentary to provide on all of them, and I'm here for it. Really glad I stumbled across your content a couple years back.

Funny enough if you look at the floor or ceiling during stealth in the original, You are undetectable for some reason. Makes them easy to get thru

It's criminal why no other dev uses destruction and physics objects so extensively as RFG. Open world games have stagnated so much, they could do better with a bit of mayham

Wasn’t Crackdown supposed to do that too? Unfortunately, I heard the third game didn’t do too well

The best part about geomod was multiplayer. I would use explosives to make deep twisty tunnels and then sit in the back of the map with the railgun. The rail gun can see and shoot through walls.

I never owned any RF games, but some of my brother's best friends had 1 or 2 on the ps2 and the splitcreen multiplayer was so much fun 😂 i think we would play with xray, and the instagib laser that went through walls 💀 absolute fucking chaos 😂 good times
