Red Deer Wildlife Photography | Use a Hide or Stalk?

Ойын-сауық

Wildlife Photography, stalking deer and using a Tragopan pop-up hide. I'm back in the Scottish Highlands to photograph the red deer rut for October 2021, but have I messed it up?

    I always stalk deer, but I've only had real luck with badgers and birds hiding like a little boy. Love the image of only the head sticking out. Beautiful my dude!

    Mess up? These images are beautifull. I admire the rest that you can keep. I probably would have tried to get closer and scare them. I realy love the shot in portret where you can just see the head above the bushes 👌

    I don't think you messed it up. Nature is unpredictable and you adjust your plan. Very nice video and I really like the images where the red deer is small in the frame with the nice Autumn colors in the background 👏

    Good call on getting out and stalking them. That's exactly what I would have done. As long as you're quiet and don't move too fast and stay down wind from them, you have a good chance of remaining unnoticed. If they do suspect something, they'll probably stand up and stare at you, giving you the opportunity you were waiting for. Sometimes I intentionally take a step toward an animal or make some noise to get their attention so they will look at me. You really have to read the animal because some animals will flee at the first sight of humans, but others will just stop and stare for a moment as long as you don't come any closer, giving you a perfect opportunity for a great shot.

    Hi Espen, beautiful scenery and a wonderful subject to photograph. If I may, I think it may be worth moving the microphone further away from your mouth. The “saliva” sound ones mouth makes in between words can be incredibly off-putting to listeners. It’s just something to be aware of when recording audio. Please don’t take that the wrong way, I think your videos are great and I watch many of them. But I have to push through the uncomfortableness of being able to hear those sounds. Bless you and thank you for sharing your passion for wildlife with us.

    Could you do a video sometime about how to quickly switch between photo and video settings? I usually find that I have to choose one or the other if an animal isn't going to hold still for me because it takes so long to adjust my ISO, shutter speed, and aperture and switch between video mode and manual mode. What is your solution?

  • @EspenHelland

    @EspenHelland

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I suppose it depends a bit on what system you use? A video on it is a good idea. It’s very easy with Olympus.

  • @keithholland4322

    @keithholland4322

    @@EspenHelland I would appreciate that. I've found it kind of frustrating that when I turn the mode dial to video, my shutter speed stays at 1/1,000th of a second or whatever I had it set for for photos and when I switch back to manual mode, it stays at 1/60th of a second or 1/125th or whatever I had it set for for video, so I'd love to hear how you set that up. Can those settings be assigned to custom dials?
