This is something i really love about gaming, it's an excellent way to introduce people to different historical periods, different cultures and hell, sometimes different philosophies. And sure, a video game must, much like a movie, constantly walk the line between entertainment and accurate portrayal. However in my opinion, RDR2 does a good job of maintaining the balance between the two, AND videos like these are excellent to prove or disprove such things as well!

Video games brought young people into the gun world, folks needs to understand that. I don't think a lot of you understand the importance of video games to our future generations, they are just like the Hollywood movies in the 80s, they got young people interested in firearms, they make people want to support the 2nd amendment. Laugh at video games all you want, but you wouldn't want a future where boys lose interests in firearms completely, by then the only ones fighting for 2nd amendment rights will be a bunch of 80 years olds that can barely raise their rifle while the gun control supporters are gaining new blood each year. That's not the America you want.

Yes video games spawned an interest in guns in the gamer world! Has not done so much in getting them off the couch/arm chair/gaming pod to actually "JOIN US" the argument is two fold. I have a game system it is a nice break from my gun world not the other way around. I do not laugh at the video games or "gamer`s" I find at the range or "PROACTIVE WITH THE 2nd AMENDMENT" I appreciate their efforts. There is a feeling of loss for those stuck in the gaming world that "TALK GUNS" Gamer: Awesome .338 Lupa I can pick targets off 1100 yards Me: Nice ever get behind a real one see what it is all about? Gamer: Well I own one it over there in the cabinet Me: Nice ever been shooting with it get it out see what it is all about slap targets punch paper? Gamer: What? you mean like outside? It is a collectors rifle. I shot it 3 times 5 years ago. Then there are the gamer`s that squeeze the trigger for the first time go back to gaming as a break from shooting.

I learned handgun shooting with a Colt SAA back in the 1950s. Been shooting SAs ever since, and although I have owned and shot DAs and Semi-autos I still prefer the SA as my go to weapon. They have a "point-ability" I have never been able to duplicate with any other type handgun! Saved my life late one night in near dark conditions! I learned on day one the load one, skip one, load four method! In later years as I acquired several Ruger SAs with the Transfer Bar safety system it took me a while to feel comfortable loading 6!

Here is a additional detail for some folks with revolvers. Have you wondered about why some single action revolvers have swing out cylinders (pops out to the side not the top) while some do not? It is because people learned over time when using top break revolvers the frame can bend from the stress. This will require the gun to get fixed. It can cost a lot of money for some people. Also when one has been used a lot they might pop out of the slot when firing. What people learned was that the old solid frames and loading this old fashion way was more durable and lasts longer from stress of use during time. This is what caused some international militaries to quit using a top break revolver and switch to one that loads like this. Around the later years in the 1800s someone figured out a solution to have a quick ejection of a top break but still had the longevity of the solid frames. It was the swing out cylinders. I have heard there was some additional details that might have been involved to require the concept to be improved on before it became more popular. The end result basically is not everyone opted to use a swing out cylinder and not every gun on the market had them for this personal opinion about longevity and who they were trying to sell too. You did in fact have a lot of guns during this time on the market for civilians to have many ways loaded, ejected a bullet, or how the cylinder came out. During this time it was also not unheard of a revolver owner to send his gun to a gunsmith to be changed. (Solid frame with a load out cylinder to be turned into a swing out cylinder, top break, or etc. There was even a thing where people retrofitted their old percussion cap musket loading style revolvers to be turned into a more modern top beak cartridge guns. I think there was even a thriving business of one gun product that offered this literally a few years or year after the Civil war ended. It's a long story of why they were doing this for another time) Also I have heard the classic solid frames with the loading gate classic reload feature was actually cheap to manufacture and sell compared to other types of guns during one period. This kind of influenced it being more seen in use. This means it is not technically wrong to see a "cattleman's revolver" load differently in whatever media you see. The word I hear is really a umbrella term people created later on maybe in the late final years of the 1800s when everything was ending or by the generation that lived after it ended. More specifically it is the media that markets something with a cowboy gimmick (cowboy gun) will often use this term to sell to this post 1800s generation that is interested in the wild west. The term "Cattleman's revolver" I hear originated to refer to guys working in livestock and ranching that sometimes had to use a revolver to kill a venomous snake, coyote, or any other varmint that wondered onto their property with the ability to pose a threat to their animals. The guns they typically used I hear was not really top of the line advance for the time. They just needed a basic gun. The purpose was for giving a warning shot to rethink about messing with his animals or flag out kill it. For this you don't really need a advance top of the line fancy gun. You just need, "A gun." As mentioned before the classic old solid frames were cheap at some point and when the market started to sell more advance guns I think they gotten cheaper. This is what lead to some using very old revolvers and guns and led to the evolution of the term, where businesses started using the name as a marketing gimmick. Then it lead to being used in entertainment media. "This is the gun used by cowboys. It is the cattleman's revolver." The reason why some of these ranchers used whatever gun that was cheap, old, or not always the advance for the time is because during old days the life of ranching could be a lonesome career. You did not always meet many people other than those with you working. This means more often you might had to use this on wild animals than people. For outlaws, competitive shooters, and lawmen of the time they might use something more advance/advantageous for combat. You would still find some still using the old fashion style of revolver though. It honestly came down to preference, opinion, and what you could afford in those days.

An old video Dustin but this is my first viewing of your video. You were comparing the real gun to the gun in the video game regarding the seam on the front of the frame. On a hunch I looked up the bb gun reproductions of the Colt SAA on Amazon. There is one being sold by Colt and another by Crossman (possibly the same gun) and they both have the seam in the frame. Maybe at one point the video game designers were looking at the bb gun for reference.

Love the videos, and that longer barrel version of the 73 is growing on me. (used to think shorter ones were cool - until I actually started shooting them!) A point to consider re the 'cowboy load'... And I mean no offense, but am merely wondering... There is I think some debate about whether or not this was done historically, and to what degree both with cap and ball and cartridge guns like the 1873. Current safety doctrine with single action style revolvers among modern shooters is to utilize the ‘cowboy load’ (5 of six) but... How much this was actually ever done by cowboys, or civil war soldiers, or prospectors, or stagecoach robbers, or old west gun fighters, is an open question - especially as in the cap and ball days they had the option of resting the hammer between chambers, and modern black powder shooters, generally speaking, are shooting for recreation, not counting on their guns to save their lives, or take another. While our 19th century ancestors were as aware of firearms safety as we are today - probably more so, as guns were much more commonplace in daily life and virtually all the firearms in use at the time as far as handguns went, had no mechanical safety -- there is something to the argument that the ‘cowboy’ load of loading five chambers out of six is, if not exactly a modern invention, then something popularized by modern shooters. This may be particularly so in cowboy action shooting where it is enforced at competitions and events as a safety rule all are required to follow. Most of these people are using versions of the 1873 cartridge gun which does not have such ‘safety’ notches. It may be that historically, regarding loading only five, some did this and some did not, but less so with cap and ball revolvers than the later 1873 single actions. What is unlikely is that outside of routine carry anyone ever loaded only five if he knew he was going to need the gun immediately or soon after loading. It has been claimed there is no reference to this historically, among gunfighters. While this is a subject probably better left to historians and research, shooters know how these guns work, and their mechanical limitations, and they did then, in the 19th century, as well. My educated guess is, when carrying the gun daily, some may have used an empty chamber, some a safety notch. But if someone knew he was going into a fight, or a battle, he likely loaded all chambers (which is probably the reason original Colt cap and ball guns had the safety notches and pins to begin with - why didn't colt carry that or a slot between chambers, like the remington new model army, over to their cartridge gun?) Just some thoughts... Thanks again for the vids!

From my understanding the cowboy load was useful for keeping it loaded and ready, but once in a fire fight and reloading, you would load all 6 after the first 5 were fired as having an empty chamber didnt matter at that point. Good video not trying to insult, but it didnt really cover when or why youd load the 6th round, just that youd load 5.

Ideally, the star ejector should travel only far enough to pull empty brass-- any unfired cartridges should have their projectiles still in the chambers to prevent them falling out. Though I don't have much confidence of that feature actually working as intended while you're bouncing on horseback.

At 4:20 I'm Impressed that Colt had an internal safety policy to report potential damage issues as far back as 1873. There were no "product liability laws" back in those days, but Colt was honest enough to admit that keep the hammer "half-cocked" was no insurance for complete safety. I'm impressed with the safety of the "cowboy load" and Colt's warning about being "half-cocked" was no insurance for safety. Great video. This is a great history lesson for somebody like me who is only now learning "gun safety". I'm glad to hear that "gun safety" was practiced almost 150 years ago.
