    My first A500 was second hand, my buddy and I brought a copy of "Shadow of the Beast" to test the system. (I'm not sure if that was truly a good test bed but my friend insisted it was). Then I created a Frankenstein by attaching a "Bodega Bay" which allowed me to add the Zorro II cards and eventually a toaster... Ahh memories, I remember hooking up a 80 meg hard drive thinking I'll never fill this thing up! ;)

    Good job hanging onto an original Amiga box (whether or not it's the original box the Amiga came in when your dad bought it) after over 25 years! When our kids were small, "Santa" would use big computer boxes to hide their presents in; later on, the boxes which were small enough to be liftable when filled usually got reused as shipping boxes for eBay packages.

    Nice! It took out some memories of me and my father going to buy the A500 and a A1011 disk drive, in 1989. After a while, he brought the memory expansion card, a compatible one without clock, and a Star LC20 to print. First disk inserted: WB1.3, first game was Afterburner II. Still have the diskettes and the Amiga 500 (and many others, yup). Cheers, M

    Quite fun to follow this series of videos. The Amiga is quite an interesting computer, like its 8-bit predecessors. I rarely compose Amiga music, since I'm not too crazy about the sample-based soundchips, but it's fun to try to make a song using 4 channels, especially since one can get around the limit by using a sampled chord as one instrument.

    I would probably have measured the ESR and capacitance on the removed capacitors, just out of interest, to see if there was any evidence that they had started to degrade or not. I have an early chicken-lips A500 in my modest collection. It only really gets used as a novelty every once in a while because I have higher performance AMIGAs to use as "daily runners". But I haven't changed out the electrolytics and this is probably a good idea since a bad electrolytic can end up causing some damage to the PCB and in some cases this damage can be impossible to repair without leaving a scar on the motherboard, which is kind of a shame. So maybe I'll do a video, inspired by this one, and I'll measure the capacitors that come out of the machine to see what's up with them.

    After what i can remember, the difference between KS1.2 and KS1.3 was that KS1.2 didnt have hard drive booting, so you had to insert a disk that told the machine to boot from the harddrive. While KS1.3 did so automatically if you didnt insert a disk before the boot.

    I always use 12% Hydrogen Peroxide liquid. I have 2 50w UV LED lamps and it is the UV that is most important. I never use any heat (apart from the very low temperature from my lamps, which I can hardly feel) and I get brilliant results every time. Heat is really not needed at all.

    Great video as always. I hope you can get that 1084 working. I am considering retrobrighting my A500 - it is terribly yellow if you have seen it in any of my videos. My concern is that the plastic is also quite brittle now too. Have you noticed any change in brittleness of the plastic after treatment? I don't want to cause more damage to my case.

  • @DanielSchneller

    @DanielSchneller

    5 жыл бұрын

    I did the same to mine, and there was no change in the structure of the plastic at all. My keys were more evenly yellowed (close to what Jan‘s number keys), and all the originally dark keys become much brighter than before - but without the yellow, which I consider a win. If you’re interested, I did not film it, but took quite a few pictures along the way: www.danielschneller.com/2018/01/amiga-500-restoration-retrobrighting-i.html

    More like manufactured on the same PCB panel then cut off and sold as addon. It was never planned to be part of the 500 as standard, RAM chips were too expensive for that. Of course I'm sure some runs they just didn't bother populating that part otherwise they would have made just as many ram expansions as they made 500s and I don't believe they did. A lot of people bought cheaper third party ram expansions anyways.

    Amiga emulation is extremely good these days so that makes perfect sense. I just like to tinker with the hardware too much to enjoy emulation as much (although I do use WinUAE and its derivatives quite a lot).

    The box handle is not in the center, I think the inner box should be on the left and the Amiga on the right in the box for the balance.

    I think they did it because the power supply has a heavy transformer. The balance is pretty good with mouse/transformer/Amiga in the box.

    Riskteven I am pretty sure there already were videos where he took off a chip from a board, added a socket and then the replacement chip into that socket.

    If I remember correctly, the CIA in that Amiga was socketed but the socket didn’t make proper contact so I had to replace it with a new one.

    Mod music is good for the demo scene and games but can't cut it for studio quality synth music, which is why the ST was the go to machine for professional musicians because of the included MIDI and incredibly tight timings, which rivals the best of today's offerings.
