Recover Your Soul Podcast - Al-Anon Book Study - Personal Boundaries and Detachment

Музыка

I have been offering a book study on 'How Al-Alanon Works for Friends and Families of Alcoholics' for the Bonus Friday episodes with Apple Subscribers and Patreon Members for the last month.
When it came time to read and reflect on the sections on Personal Boundaries and Detachment, I knew that this needed to be an episode for the Monday Podcast as these are foundational tools in Soul Recovery. We can confuse codependence for showing love in a relationship and eventually loose ourselves. With the use of personal boundaries and detachment, we can separate the disease from the person we love and see the situation through healthier eyes. Since we can't control anything outside of ourselves, we can take our power back and control what we can... our attitude, our thoughts, and our own lives.

When I detached with love my marriage unraveled slowly to divorce. The nicest thing he ever said was “if u think I’m going to change your crazy” he found a nurse employee that would accept him. I could send her a thank you card someday. To do this u need a lot of support, even w support it’s brutal but the best thing you can do for yourself. U need to build tremendous grit first & commit to it. Very difficult.

Many alanon’s think recovery means you stay with these bad relationships now. To stay or leave is not the point. I had a sponsor who sad when & or if ur recovered enough u can be around these abusive people. “A true alanon, playing God, like she has any idea the best thing for me”

I get it!! It is not the stopping the addiction or dysfunctional behavior that makes change, it is the Soul Recovery - the desire to replace the unhealthy solution with a new one. It is not easy when they are still acting in unhealthy ways- keep doing your Soul Recovery!!!

Impossible to be safe LIVING with the Alcoholic .Wasted years .There needs to be 12step programme for people who still have active drinkers in their lives .Emotional distance is not enough .Speakers like yourself need to get real .People suicide living this way.

Safety is one of the most important things to think about for yourself and if you have kids. There are lots of situations where emotional distance is not enough and the best option is physical distance for the safety and wellbeing of those being affected by an addict. It is interesting that in Al-Anon there are more people who have chosen to leave a situation where the spouse does not choose recovery than those who continue to live with an unsafe one. The work that we do in Al-Anon or in Soul Recovery is for well being and to find connection to Higher Power- not the change the other person. I know for me, this journey has given me strength, clarity and compassion to choose for myself what is right for me in my life and to not be afraid to walk away if it is needed. I have experienced the pain and hopelessness that feels like it is the only way I will ever feel- and have gratitude that I have reached out for help at those times so that I did not make a rash decision in that darkness. If anyone ever feels that hopelessness- please reach out to someone or call the suicide prevention hotline- you are worth it and there are people to help. Doing this work is about empowering ourselves and getting out of the emotional cyclone of unhealthy people around us so we can discover who we are and choose to be happy and healthy ourselves. In this healthy place, we can decide who is in our lives and detach from the need to be responsible for others recovery or happiness. As with all that I offer in Soul Recovery- take what works for you and leave the rest. I am speaking from my own recovery journey and know that we are all unique and our on our own paths. Blessings, Rev Rachel

Yes, this is not conference approved as this is my interpretation of what I call Soul Recovery and is influenced by my recovery which includes Al-Anon and AA and is not intended to replace or speak for Al-Anon. Thank you for listening and welcome to the Recover Your Soul community- all are welcome!

I was influenced by Al-Anon and AA in my recovery and love that it is a part of what I call Soul Recovery along with other influences. This episode and all my podcasts are from my personal experience and reflect on these influences and how they relate to Soul Recovery and what I have learned in on my journey of healing.
