Recoupment of Military Separation Pay

From time to time, the Department of Defense offers incentives to encourage people to get out of the military. But those payments might have to be repaid if you get a VA disability or eventually earn a pension. Don't get caught in the confusing rules of this process.

Great video. My friends' are always surprised when I describe the final audit process (government withholding final active duty pay for six weeks while they audit your records). Withholding pay is a serious legal matter for civilian employers, and it's mind-blowing that it's legal for the government to do that for service members. Finally, the whole message to service members and veterans is absolutely crazy. "We make mistakes calculating your pay and benefits. If we overpay you, we'll make it right by taking it back."

No doubt. It just adds to the stress and frustration that occurs in the first year of separation.

Outstanding. Thanks for helping make others aware. Maybe DFAS and VA will start communicating. It truly can't be that hard. But like most things, until it effects them, there won't be any change.

Bingo. And there is a fundamental disfunction in how this kind of thing effects the leaders of DFAS and VA. As long as the screams from the afflicted aren't too loud, they will focus on bigger problems that do get more media attention. But the more the brass acts like everything is OK, the worse it gets. You get screwed while you serve and your get screwed while you are out. Hmm, I can see why recruitment is way down for three of the four services.

I took the SSB in 1992 and ended up retiring from the AF Reserves, it took almost 2 years before I got any $$ after initially being rated at 40%. When I turned 60 and started collecting retired pay DFAS ended up collecting more $$ for the Taxes deducted from initial SSB payment. GOOD TIMES
