What are your thoughts on using tape for recording in 2023?

It depends on what you record with. I would never, ever recommend recording "to tape" using an 80s cosumer reel-to-reel device for example.

I bought an Unitra machine to track "to tape" and I was really disappointed. I had to use DIN cables to record, which was clunky and tedious. The hiss was louder than the signal, the sound would often drop or sound mangled, and there was never that "silky" sound everybody kept talking about. The audio sounded lo fi in the worst imaginable way.

Still love that sound especially for the rhythm section like you say & to mellow out harsh cymbals. Digital can definitely capture the most high end detail but ultimately I think a hybrid approach will usually yield the best results. In a recent interview with Neil Young & Rick Rubin they said for World Record they digitized right off the playback heads so the tape didnt have time to degrade.

servicing my 688 to run the pres eqs and tape options as a pre daw warmer. Ill experiment with various options. I'd rather that than plugins for now. I does sound better still compared to straight to audient. My audient has no inserts nor sends so it avails me hardware as well.

Was given a Tascam 388 and an early model Otari MX5050 2-track by a friend. Quarter inch 8-track isn't exactly known for its fidelity but it definitely has a nice sound to it. Unfortunately the play/record head on the 388 requires relapping. The plus side is that I bought some calibration tapes and taught myself to calibrate tape machines. So what are my thoughts on using tape in 2023? Tape choices are limited to a handful of types from two manufacturers and are not cheap, calibration tapes are expensive, tape machines require regular maintenance, and tape isn't exactly a convenient medium. It does sound lovely though and I really like the workflow and trying to make the most of its limitations. I also have a soft spot for physical media.

Love what you said about the onus to perform. That is my biggest enemy in my studio. 2 things have helped: having the client or a friend present while tracking, and taking a minimalist rig anywhere but your usual setting. Really brings some fun and magic back to what can otherwise be an isolating profession or endeavor.

Sorry I don't comment each time, but each time I watch one of these precious shorts, it's a nice learning moment :) It's like I met Warren today in the neighborhood, and we had a lovely word.

i used tape way back and just loved the warm sound. It was great for our sound but honestly I just can't imagine how I would justify doing it again (until I get an Aerosmith budget :) at least haha) Love your content !

When my younger collaborator asked my opinion about him purchasing a tape machine I told him quite honestly that I would prefer to have to use an outhouse than go back to magnetic tape.

It's a pain in the butt to use, but sounds 100 times better than using digital, eqs compressors and that fake digital tape emulation...all my hardware compressors, eqs and analog effects sounded much much better, too...and not like, icey cold, digital mush

As a long time amature, I've had some experience with big old consoles and multi-track tape; but like a lot of people, all low budget second hand stuff. And it certainly had its charms. But, I reckon, unless you've got the good analogue gear AND the means to keep it maintained.....well, In The Box, is just getting better every day.....

Warren! I saw you’re selling your console. When do we get to hear the story of why and when will you tell us what’s going to come next? Control surface? Will the cadac bemoved front and center? So many questions! Cheers

Anything going to vinyl should be made on tape. The fact that we are transferring hi res digital recordings to vinyl is a joke. You are then getting the worst of both. We should be listening to modern music mostly in hi res directly for best sound quality. MQA and tidals greed has left a bad taste in peoples mouths when it comes to hd audio. Very few people even knew hi res was an option until apple completely changed the game and shut everyone down. 24 bit 48 kHz should at least be the standard. It’s the best balance between quality and practicality. I can’t believe KZread still hasn’t gone to at least CD quality. All these advancements in tech and we are listening to mp3 sounding low bitrate garbage still.
