​@@umangatang When you record a guitar, which is already distorted (with actual guitar amp, etc,), the recorded waveform is like a brickwall (visually) and you CAN'T SEE the different parts - riffs, notes. But when you record a DI guitar, which is basicly clean guitar, the waveform is more visually workable. :) You can see the riffs, separet notes, work with them - move them, adjust them, everything. So here's the deal - first your record a DI guitar and then you compress it/distort it with guitar amp simulations. Fortin Nameless, Amplitube, Bias FX, Guitar Rig, etc. There are plenty outhere.

@@DundyTM I want to use my Behringer V-AMp for it. I am trying to understand how I can do that. Apparently I can play through it still and get clean signal to interface, using one of the sends, but then how do I monitor? ALmost lik effects loop but only for monitoring. I can use headphone out from v-amp but that will not have the stuff in my DAW. so I should be listening to the whole thing but effects coming from V-Amp to monitor while recording clean signal. That is mind boggling

But in my case I want a clean DI track to be recorded simultaneously to recording my Hughes&Kettner Grandmeister directly into my DAW, so I can properly edit later. Of course the DI of the Grandmeister has all the effects from the amp on it and its already a brick wall signal. How do I "reverse engineer" that while still being able to listen to my nice distorted tone while recording? Or do I have to record a DI, listen to some sort of tone I dialed in via amp sims and THEN reamp the DI through my H&K? I´d really like to aviod that because a) it seems very complicated and b) I dont have a Reamp Box.

I think for this genre you are totally right, recording direct you probably want to hear a processed signal. However, I track direct all the time and it really helps me dial in my playing, if it sounds great before processing, it will really shine when you properly eq/compress or send it to a verb/delay. Your articulation is really good man, I was able to follow your whole video and retain/learn a lot! Even after being a FOH engineer for several years. Thank you! Cheers!

I have the same 2nd Gen 6i6 and Radial Reamp Box. I"m amazed how well they work together and can send a DI signal that sounds exactly as if I were playing it live. I always record a DI whether I'm recording amped or not; it's a nice backup and lets me record any time of day (or night). I've found it's easier to match the recording levels of your hot amped (or mic'ed) signal to your dry DI signal from the get-go the best you can rather than trying to match them later. I get my hot signal from a Behringer Ultra G right off the speaker cable between the amp and cab. Most DI boxes would catch fire or worse in this situation being on the speaker line, don't use one that's not made for this application.

I have bias fx. And it sounds amazing when i jam. But it processes the sound in a nice stereo format that sounds great. Then when recorded it sounds horrible. But if you double track and pan. Or quad track and pan it sounds great again. So if anyone has bias fx and is frustrated. Just remember you need at least 2 di guitar tracks before you eq and pan.

I game with a 1ms monitor. If I gamed with a 4ms monitor, I would likely get killed by the enemy every time (at least in MMO games). I am trying to get better tone with my digital recordings. My Sweetwater rep suggested a DI. One of my best clean tones was using a single coil Fender neck pup straight into the audio interface with no amp sims - just sim effects. Great video.

I have a countryman 85 that I usually use for recording DI into my DAW and then use amp sim & cab IR. But I am now trying to record an actual amp and then use an IR on that. I'm very confused if, once the DI has been recorded, can I then use the Countryman to reamp the signal into an amp? Or do I need a whole other box? There is an AMP output on the Countryman but looking online I see only that it is used for DI. In the manual it seems as though you can plug the instrument or pre-recorded DI into the amp, then use speaker mode to route that sound to a cab. But since I will only be using the signal from the amp direct and then use a cab sim in my DAW, is there a proper way to do this? Can this be done with the COuntryman 85 or do I need to buy a dedicated reamp box? And is there a risk of me blowing up my amp or interface if I do any of this wrong? I've watched a bunch of videos but I am still very confused, please help!

If someone wants to track with an amp and simultaneously capture the DI, what would be the difference between using something like the Torpedo versus using an AB-Y pedal with one output going into an amp and the other output direct into the interface (assuming the interface can match with the appropriate impedance to accept a DI signal)?

enjoyed but wish on re-amping you touched on the best settings the levels out of the AI should be on 100% full volume getting a clean sound grounding etc into the reamp box out then into a the input of whatever your using (Amp, Kemper, Fractal etc)

With a two channel interface is it feasible to use a signal splitter before sending one signal into your pedal board and then nicing the amp and sending the other signal directly into your interface? The audient id14 for example has a JFET guitar in that I'd expect to work for something like this. Would give me a safety net as well as a real guitar capture. Another alternative I'd have is to capture the line out of my power soak giving me the amps DI and enabling me to play around with IRs.

Any suggestion?... I plan to use the J48 active DI (active from phantom power) that connects from its XLR output (balanced line level) to the TRS input (balance line level) of my Scarlett 4i4. I want avoid using the XLR input of the Scarlett interface since it's designed to receive a balanced mic level signal. Problem: isn't phantom power (for the active DI) only available from that XLR connection on my interface? Is there a way to phantom power the DI with the TRS?... That is absolutely a thing, just not very common nowadays. According to Dave Mustaine, that's one of the tricks to Megadeth's 80s and 90s guitar tones - Dave on the sides, and the lead guitarist in the center for rhythm passages.

Are you using the Focusrite Control software? If not you need to, and set Playback 3 and 4 to minimal output in the Monitor Output 1-2 DAW Playback mix. Then, set 3 and 4 to 0dB in the DAW Playback mix in Line Output 3-4.

Can i ask what's the difference between re-amping and just using plain vst? i can record with vst and then remove it and put another one? isn't that much much more easy then re-amping? i just recorded guitar with a vst then turned it off and sent the dry track as WAVE file and he used it in a song with what kind of vst he wanted for that recording. I feel like i'm missing something here..

The thing of reamping is that you are essentialy working with analog equipment (amp, pedals, etc). Using vst is way more convenient for what you describe but some people prefer "all analog"

you can go direct into your interface no problem for recording. you don't need a DI box. for reamping however, you need absolutely need a reamp box to convert your line level signal (the di signal you already recorded in your DAW) to an instrument level signal (the tiny little signal your guitar pickups create, and that any amp is made for). if you don't plan on ever using an actual amplifier and are only using plugins there's no need for a re amp box.

Anyone else notice the shimmer on the bottom right edge of the screen?

If you stand back from your amp while playing guitar you have a latency of 3ms for every meter. Nice and simple explanation video but you didn't explain how to connect a reamp box XLR input to the interface's 1/4 inch output jack.

It isn't terribly important either way, but the best practice is to stick with a balanced connection if its available for a lower noise floor, i.e. XLR or TRS. That means for the Iron Heart, you can take the XLR into the front microphone input, or use an XLR to male TRS cable and route it to the back input since its balanced too (thats what I do with my amps' loadbox).

@@PlagueScytheStudios Cheers mate. I'd prefer DI input on the rear lines, as it leaves the fronts easily accessible, and I can just leave the two amps plugged in.

I mainly record directly into my 2i2 with a guitar with EMG 81s using VST plug ins. So if I use a DI box, the signal will be cleaner? I do notice a lot of noise in between strumming and stopping. I'm hoping it would fix that and make guitar playing quieter in a sense.

What generation is your interface? My first gen 2i2 was fairly noisy on active pickups as well, but my second gen 6i6 sounds fine. They improved the pre amps in the revised product line.

yeah, if it's noise when you're not playing, you need to play with your DAW's noise gates. it's definitely not your interface. whenever using amps sims, it takes some time to play around and really massage them to get the sound you want. i've found throwing a de-esser on them helps clean up the fizzy top end, for example.

This is a very nice video to put out there. I love your videos but it wouldnt be a youtube comment if there wasnt some sort of complaint in there so Ill say ‘get some soundproofing material for your roof’.... but yeah. Love your vids!!!!

If you record without di-box, you must use the hi-z input. With di-box use the line input.

I'm still trying to find the answer to whether or not I am suppose to buy the reamp box (I want one) separate from additionally buying a DI box. Can you help me? I ask because the retailers description(s) do not mention specifically so. IMO a reamp box seems to be capable of providing all that a stamdard DI box cam do for your studio recording needs. In my case, it is just electric guitar tracking. I dont have a half stack yet but I plan to be able to reamp for later, I am just recording with neural dsp amp sims and pro tools, through scarlet 2i4. I really want to know before invest in a di box or reamp box. I need to know if I need both. Hope this makes sense. Thank you so much for your content.

If you're recording guitar straight through the front pre amps of the 2i4, you don't need a DI box. Those pre amps are designed to handle the impedance of an electric guitar. If you re amp later, you will still need a re amp box to take the line level impedance to instrument level before going through an amplifier.

some boxes do both. i like to plan for the long run when buying gear. the little labs red eye is both, and can even do both simultaneously. i have the little labs IBP becuase it can do both very well, as well as it's primary function of a phase sweep. i also have a countryman type 10 di. radial makes quality gear for a little cheaper than either of those brands. i picked mine for versatility reasons.

Great info man. Question, the group of guitars that I use to record with are both active and passive guitars. Which DI Box would I need in order to be able to play either? From my understanding, active guitars are better through a passive DI, and passive guitars are better through and active DI. Is there one unit that I can use for both? I've been looking at the Radial's, but don't know which route to go! Any advice would be greatly appreciated 👊

Split your signal with one end into an amp, and the other into your interface. Most DI boxes do this, and I use this method all the time monitoring my AX8 or a head.

I'm using an amp simulator the th3 with cakewalk and I get a lot of buzz when recording guitar. It goes away when I touch the computer or the cable jack. How do I fix it?

That's probably a 120 Hz ground noise issue. There are quite a few things you can do to resolve it, depending on your budget and convenience need.

Sounds like some kind of grounding problem. are you using an interface? and if so are your computer and your interface plugged into different wall sockets for power? also, does your guitar do this when playing through an amp as well?

@@slavesforging5361 it was just cheap so called "monitors" that weren't grounded. They sell them as studio monitors but they really aren't. I got some better monitors and it's all good now. Thanks man.

Hi. So, I'm really confused and trynna figure out what to do and what should I buy to make a better sound. I'm using a cheap-decent guitar and directly use it on a 2nd gen Focusrite solo. What should I get to make it sound "good"? Should I get a DI box or Reamp box? Thank you for anyone that can help me. PS. I'm a newbie in recording music and really eager to learn to make my own music.

I'm having trouble producing an acceptable volume on most of my recordings, it's quite annoying. The perceived volume is fine in the DAW but when I bounce the track and listen to it (either MP3 or WAV), it's super fucking quiet no matter how hard I push the master in the DAW (without making it clip like crazy of course). Any stupid beginner thing I might not have tried yet?

Are you mastering in any sense? A straight up mix that isn't peaking will be quiet compared to a mastered track that's been compressed and maximized.

When you do your initial mixdown, your goal should be a great mix that doesn't peak at all. Your goal isn't necessarily max volume. You do want to keep the tracks as high as possible though. Just make sure nothing peaks. Then take your exported stereo file and re-import it to your DAW. Then you master that stereo file. Read up on mastering and you'll learn a lot. It'll definitely make a difference in your final mix volume. I'm sure you'll be a lot happier after.

So if the tube amp has a DI port, would I still need to buy a reamp box to connect it to audio interface for recording to a DAW and play through my computer studio monitors? I am looking at tube amps that have DI port for home recording.

re amp boxes are not for recording direct signal to your daw. quite the opposite. they're for taking a direct signal you've already recorded to your daw, running it out of your daw and back into a guitar amp. you need the reamp box to convert the line level signal from your DAW into an instrument level signal that every guitar amp is built for. If the tube amp has a di out, feel free to plug that straight into your interface and record it. bear in mind, you MUST still have speakers (or a fancy loadbox) plugged into your tube amp if the power is turned on. this is non-negotioable, but doesn't need to be done for solid state amps. number two: remember that an amp without speakers is going to sound like absolute gutter trash and be completely unusable. if you record your di out, you will absolutely need some sort of speaker emulation plugin (ir cabs) to make it sound somewhat decent.

I am new to tracking guitars digitally through VSTs like bias fx and seeing how technology has progressed, i am thoroughly motivated to jump from analogue to digital. Now I want to run processed signals directly from bias fx for live tracking and recording. I have a Scarlett 2i4. My signal chain will be- PRS custom 24>Scarlett2i4>Bias fx>studio monitors Do you think this will make do for my requirements? Are 5" studio monitors powerful enough to handle Overdriven patches and other processed signal straight from Bias?

Reamping was basically around since the invention of recording. Not "since 25 years ago" "The process of "reamping" has actually been utilized since the very first days of recording in a variety of methods. However, the actual process utilized may not have been referred to as Reamping until perhaps the late 1960s or 1970s. From the early possibilities of recording sound various composers and experimenters utilized what might be termed "reamping" to take advantage of the recording process and to expand upon its possibilities. In 1913 Italian Futurist Luigi Russolo proposed something he termed the "Art of Noises". Recordings of any sound (anything was legitimate) were made on Berliner discs and played back via "noise machines" in live scenarios and recollected on "master" disc cutters. This concept was furthered by Pierre Schaeffer and his "Musique Concrete" electronic music concept in the 1930s and 1940s. Schaeffer would utilize sounds such as trains in highly manipulated processes to compose new music ideas. These processes often involved the replaying and acoustic re-recording of material in a manipulated fashion. Other experimenters in this area included Karlheinze Stockhausen and Edgard Varese. " It was extensively used in the 1960s notably by Motown and Phil Spector.

@3:14 - Dude.. the Focusrite Scarlett interface already has a DI input on it, so your point about going into a separate DI first and then going into the DI on the interface doesn't make any sense, UNLESS you're trying to say the DI on the Focusrite sucks. The only other thing I can think of is you're talking about using the Thru on the seperate DI to go into an amp while recording the dry signal simultaneously. There wouldn't be any other reason that I can think of except for reamping.

You're putting words into my mouth. I'm not assuming people are recording direct with this exact interface, or recording direct at all. My point was - if you're recording a live amp or outboard gear in general, be sure to capture a DI as well, however that needs to be accomplished. It's obviously redundant if you're just recording straight into an interface with a good preamp and mixing through plugins.

@@PlagueScytheStudios - It's not about "putting words in your mouth", it's about how you laid out the information in your video, which was pretty disjointed or skewed. My apologies if that sounds a bit harsh. First of all, from @2:51 to @3:14 you said you're using the Focursrite interface for DI, but then @7:18 you said you're using the AxeFX for the DI, which completely contradicted your entire narrative and made no sense. Now put the logic together: You made it sound as if the Focusrite DI was either irrelevant OR you're running one DI into the other DI, unless of course the AxeFx doesn't work that way, but we don't know that and you never clarified it. Secondly, JFYI - there are also several crucial factors dealing with latency, all of which you're either not aware of or they were ignored. One primarily being, the most common cause of latency is from having too many background processes running (generally in Windows). Another huge cause of latency is having a weak graphics adapter. I know this because I've been building computers my entire life and graphics have more to do with the sound than most might think. Hell, Glenn Fricker doesn't even know that much. De Facto. He's such a douche anyways, so whatever. Lastly, I'm sure you might know this, but when you simply play loud guitar examples, that means next to nothing comparatively speaking to how it will sound in a mix, so those type of things are also a bit irrelevant. I mean, granted, electric guitar with an IR cab sim or reamped tube head might sound bitchin by itself on KZread, but that's never how it's going to sound in a mix. These are all very key factors which are often overlooked. I think you realize most of this though, at least by now anyways, since this video is almost 5 years old..

You clearly understand the point I was getting at after my last response based on your reply, so this is starting to come across as someome who just wants to argue and prove themselves to be smarter than me. I assume that is not your intention, just like it was not my intention to make the potential DI I contradiction you're discussing. That's the way communication goes sometimes, so I would appreciate a little more benefit of the doubt instead of browbeating one small aspect of this video. It sounds like you are plenty knowledgable in this area, so I don't think you're the target audience for these concept. I feel like you're judging this video on criteria that does not really fit my intention when making it. It's fine that you think the content presentation could be better. But, as you point out, it's a five year old video, and plenty of people got some value out of it. It seems most people did not interpret what I said as a contradiction, but rather as two different use cases as I intended. I too have been building PCs for most of my life now, and covering latency due to a weak GPU or otherwise was simply not a goal for me in this piece. It's a little late to change it at this point without a new video, which you have all the power to make yourself if you want to get this information out there constructively. I think that would reach a much wider audience than a comment on a five year old video.

Ugh... Hard panning sounds not so good man -,- 80% pan on guitar is my max unless hard stereo is used as an effect
