I have watched Armchair historian and Kings and Generals as well. As much as I have enjoyed Kings and Genrals, Flash Point is the best. But both this and Kings and Generals have great animation.

The struggle of the Emirate of Granada in the 14th & 15th centuries : The most important battles 1309: Bakr Al Sakar battles &Siege of Almería, with the help of the Marinids, the Andalusia managed to repel the Aragonese, who had lost heavy losses: 90,000 were perished, according to Ibn al-Qadi 1314: Battle of Wadi Fartuna: Castilians crushed an andalusia forces & seized several forts 1319: Battle of Marj Granada :the Andalusians&the Marinids annilihated a Castilian Crusade of 135,000 men :50,000-80,000 or 60,000 crusaders according to Al-Dhahabi were killed or drowned including 25 princes&many nobles and priests 1324: Sultan Ismail's campaign :he captured Baeza after heavy fighting in which he used the guns 1325 Second campaign: He sacked the city of Martos in Rajab and seized many spoils and many prisoners. Then he was assassinated in his palace 3 days after his campaign, Rajab 26, 725 A.H. 1332: Al-Hajib Abu Naim Radwan campaign (originally Catalan and enslaved as a child in one of the raids on Aragon) :he launched the raids on the outskirts of Murcia & Lorca and destroyed the villages, then seized Baza in the following year 1333 The capture of Gibraltar with the help of the Marinids, and the forces of Granada, led by Sultan Muhammad bin Ismail, routed the Castilians forces who were sent to break the siege .. He returned from his campaign with many spoils and a large number of captives. 1406 Andalusians launched many raids on castile but suffered a defeat , which forced them to a truce for 8 months, after which the clashes continued 1410 Castilians under Don Fernando captured Antequera after heavy fighting, & in which they suffered heavy losses 1431 Battle of Marj Granada : The Andalusians lost the battle & 15,000 men, but they managed to repel and annilihate the Castilians and force them to lift the siege of Granada (after 60,000 castilians were killed&captured) thanks to the night attack of Veteran-commander Abu Zakaria Yahya ibn Omar with his 22,000 horsmen Between 1432-1437: Andalusians under the rule of Sultan Muhammad Al-AYsar managed to repel&annilihate many Castilian offensive: Battle of Archidona 1434: in which the Andalusians, led by Ibn Abd al-Barr al-Sarraj, crushed the Castilians and killed and captured thousands of them. Battle of Wadi Ash 1435 ended with an overwhelming victory for the Andalusians Battle of Gibraltar 1436 ended with a landslide victory for the Andalusians,& the annihilation of the Castilian forces, and the killing of their commander, ruler of Niebla. Battle of Cazorla 1437 ended with the victory of the Andalusians, they were able to annihilate the Castilian forces, but they suffered heavy losses , Ibn al Sarraj was killed. 1446 Campaign of Sultan Muhammad al-Ahnaf to Castile, and in it he seized the fortress of ''Beni Muriel'' & ''Ibn Salama'' and killed its garissons,continued to launch raids on Castile 1450 Campaign of Sultan Muhammad Al-Ahnaf to Murcia : launched raids in its area and was able to annihilate a Castilian forces in a Battle near jinjala [ Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón] 1459-1462 The Castilians raided Granada and killed & enslaved thousands and seized several fortresses. Yusef Ibn Ismail responsed & managed to defeat them and killed a large number of them, then raided many castilian villages&towns, the fighting continued until the Castilians seized Gibraltar&several forts 1464--1479 Sultan Ali Abu Al-Hassan launched many raids on Castile, refused to pay tribute & reconciliation with Spain [Aragon & Castile] and declared war, launched a major campaign in response to the Spanish raids, destroyed and sacked the city of Zahara (de la sierra) killed & enslaved its inhabitants in December 1481 and launched devastating raids and ruined many villages &towns 1482 Spain declares war on Granada The Spaniards sacked & captured the Alhama in February 1482 / Sultan Abu al-Hassan tried to retake it, but was forced to lift the siege and headed to Loja He managed to annihilate a Castilian forces of 30,000 that besieged Loja and killed most of them &seized many guns in July 1482 , the Spanish garrison fled from Alhama. The offensive of 1483: Bloody battles took place between the Andalusians led by Sultan Muhammad bin Saad Al-Zaghal and the Spaniards between Malaga and Velez, which ended in a crushing victory for the Andalusians: who crushed the Spaniards in the Battle of Al Sharqiya in March 1483 killed and captured thousands of them The other Sultan, Abu Abdullah, launched a campaign that managed to defeat small Spanish forces & seized several forts, but was ambushed and his army was destroyed in Lucena, thousands were killed&captured including the Sultan The offensive of 1485 the Spaniards captured Ronda in April after a heavy fighting , and captured most of the forts in the west of Malaga, abut their advance was halted in Moclin, after they suffered a crushing defeat in which they lost 25,000 men Spaniards took advantage of the renewed civil war between Al-Zaghl and Albayzín and resumed their offensives the offensive of 1486 they managed to capture Loja after fierce resistance in May, & seized several forts The offensive of 1487 they managed to capture Malaga after heavy fighting and a land and sea blockade in august, seized several forts and appointed Aba Abdullah Muhammad al-Saghir as Sultan. The offensive of 1488 they managed to capture Vera, Velez Blanco, and Velez Rubio, but their advance was halted after they suffered a crushing defeat in Baza at the hands of Yahya Al-Nayar's forces., forcing them to retreat. The offensive of 1489 they managed to capture Ashkur and then Baza after 5 months of fighting , suffering heavy losses at the hands of Yahya Al-Nayar's forces. The offensive of 1490 :the Spaniards advance near the walls of Granada but were repelled with heavy losses, then the Sultan launched A counterattack in which he managed to capture several forts and villages and inflicted heavy defeats on the Spaniards The mudejar revolted as well and counter-attack the Spaniards The offensive of 1491 The Spanish launched a sweeping offensive of 150,000 men and retaked what they lost in the past year.Nobleman Musa ibn Musa ibn Abi Al-Ghassan launched a counter-attack with 20,000 Horsmen ,he inflicted heavy losses on the Spaniards,but was unable to repel them The Spaniards besieged Granada: The Andalusians tried to break the siege and resisted a fierce resistance for several months until the Sultan order to surrender

In 1491, 150,000 strong army? I thought medieval armies were very small, that number is almost as big as the largest Roman Field Armies 😲😲😲. Imagine the logistics to field and equip that large force

I love how the front line between Castile and Granada was finally changing toward the end of Alfonso XI's reign, especially after he used cannons. Fun fact: Spanish monarchs were numbered from Pelagius/Pelayo of Asturias, so we have Alfonso I of Asturias, Alfonso III of Asturias, Alfonso V of León, Alfonso VI of León, Alfonso X of Castile, Alfonso XI of Castile, and Alfonso XIII of Spain. There were also Fernando I "the Great" of León, Fernando III "the Saint" of Castile, and Fernando V "the Catholic" of Castile (II of Aragon). Note that the Aragonese monarchs were not included in this list, which is why Fernando "the Catholic" had two regnal numbers (V of Castile and II of Aragon). It is interesting to note that Granada later helped Alfonso XI's son (Pedro of Castile) in a civil war against his illegitimate half-brother Enrique II of Castile.

One thing i've noticed from looking at so many battles either from my own research or from channels like yours is that over-confidence is a bigger disadvantage than being outnumbered, outgunned, or outmaneuvered.

Hahaha. Yes! This was one of my favorite Flash Point History videos yet. For one, I loved the part when Alphonso had to be dragged away from battle. But more importantly, I had wondered how the gun powder technology played a part in the Reconquista. I read a book called "Why did Europe Conquer the World," and it basically asserted that the economic history, the history of warfare, and primarily the advancement of the gun powder technology by western Europe allowed it to eventually control most of the world at one point. So I really appreciated the part where the cannons came into play. As you probably know, gun powder came from China in the 1200 or 1300s but the Europeons spent lavishly on advancing it. I also wondered how the black death played a part. So your ending was just straight entertaining and almost goosebump producing. It seems like the armies of North Africa, Marinids and the Amoravins?...or whatever lol, helped Muslim Spain more so than the armies of Western Europe or the Holy Roman Empire did for Castile, Arogon and Portugal. I wonder if the Reconquista could have been quicker had that not been the case.

So you bring up a lot of really good points. Gun powder was invented in China, but it was the Europeans that really developed it as a major weapon. At this point in history firearms were still not that impressive on the battlefield. Reload times were too high and the weapons themselves could be unreliable. But that would change. In fact, it would change very quickly. By the early to mid 15th century, it was gun powder that would bring down Granada. All of those fortresses and strong points and fixed fortifications were now able to be breached. I would highly recommend a book that I read a while ago called “guns germs and steel” by Jared diamond. He gives a very good analysis, flawed at times, about how the Europeans were able to dominate the world during the age of discovery. As for the north Africans, from the time of the fall of Toledo in the year 1085 onwards, they played a vital role in keeping Islamic Spain alive. But, they were also a major threat to the Muslims that were living in the Iberian Peninsula as well. The Christian kingdoms would constantly be fighting one another. But when it suited them to declare a crusade, they could ban together and fight very effectively. As we have seen at the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212. Hope this helps.

@@nixielee Yes indeed. It's also perfectly easy to criticize another person's leadership abilities as an armchair general, from an online comment, at the distance of six hundred years. It is less simple to command an army of sixty thousand men, which to give some context, is a mass of humanity at least the size of a Football Stadium, on the ground in real time, in an age before mass media and computerized information. Would you be aware of everything transpiring or of a small group sneaking around at night? No.

Curiously, Alfonso always wanted to be buried with his father, which, as you mention, died when Alfonso was only one year old. Now I'm really excited for the next video, which should be about my favorite king, don Pedro (called "sultan dun bidru" in some epigraphs of his palace in Seville), though I wouldn't mind at all another one about the plague (of which also died Joan of England on the way to Castile to marry prince Pedro).

Joan of England was a series bada@#$ - that woman would have made an incredible Empress. Born in the wrong time. I could see her going toe to toe with Catherine the Great or Elizabeth I. Yes the War of the Two Pedros is up next - but it will be mentioned more from the vantage point of Muhammad V who ushered in the golden age of Nasrid Granada

Great video! Times like this, you have to admit, Heath Ledger's Joker said it best: "The thing about Chaos is, it's fair." Quite surprising that the Portuguese were brought in, as opposed to Navarra or Aragon. I was under the assumption that this was a period of protracted conflict between Castille and Portugal. I did find it interesting that the video was referring to the Marinids as "Caliphs" throughout. I'd never read anything which refers to them as such, rather as Emirs or Sultans. I didn't think that there were Caliphs in the west after the fall of the Almohads and the Cordovan Umayyads. Where did you come across that? Great work as always. Your channel is amazingly even handed and informative.

I forgot to mention in my pinned comment (just changed it this morning) - but your right, mistake on my part. The Marinids were a sultanate not a caliphate. Sorry about that. Happy you liked the rest of the video !

By the way Merinids were Sultanate not a Caliphate like their predecessor the Almohads, but awesome video non the less.

It really seems to be glossed over in all the history books. Can't understand why. Even from a euro-centric christian standpoint, you'd think they would have gone nuts about this. This time period in history half of Europe was being overrun by the Ottomans. A hundred years after this video's time period, Constantinople would fall. You'd figure they would want to hype the one front that Christianity was winning on

Probably because current world history has a mostly anglo-saxon focus. And the rest is more secondary. Remember when people hear of Spain they inmediatly think of the inquisition as a monstruous institution and the Spanish empire apparently commiting genocides. Both statements couldn't be further from the truth. The Spanish inquisition was tame compared to what equivalent happened in the rest of the world and the Spanish empire had no interest in genocide, they even attempted to integrate the natives of their colonies and forbade slavery, forcing the colonists to keep a blackmarket network, greatly reducing the import of slavery until the english, french and Dutch came making the slave trade truly flourish, plus the first forcing the Spanish empire to allow the slave trade in Cuba and Puerto rico, wich the kingdom was against. In múltiple occasion they attempted to abolish slavery completly, but the colonies threatened to rebell against Spain.

Lobo Cruzado I fully agree current world history is mostly Anglo Saxon focus. And even so sometimes Spain has some spot lights. Portugal never. Our history it’s not mainstream. It’s absolutely underrated. And Iberian countries have unbelievable stories to be told...much better then the “Game of thrones” 😅 without dragons of course...

Flash, the history of Spain is forbidden because it was the biggest enemy of England, basically it was a fight between catholics and protestants, behind the curtains, a fight between 2 different economic systems, the one we live today is the jew-anglosaxon one , in that time London commercial companies and banks,, Spain, the Hispanich Monarchy fought against them during nearly 300 years, so after 1820 we were being sistematically incorporated to the english international work division system, the spanish Empire died and the english boomed, so they guys who rule the system don't like too much to spread, promote spanish history, but is spaniards fault as well for being incompetent to make the world know.

It would be interesting, following the spread and political effects. I feel like i remember something about a mongol-chinese war being the initial catalyst. You could look into that, it shows how connected unconnected peoples were.

@@guardiancologne9034 Yes thats exactly right - in the Crimea. The Mongols dragged the plague with them and then started catapulting dead putrid bodies over the walls of a city under siege. From there it spread to Constantinople, Cyprus, The Levant, and Sicily .

fun fact about that last seige of gibralter a mirrinnid force was sent to aid granada one of its many soldiers was ibn battuta himself who arrived to find that the seige had already been called off due to the plague

TBH - it didn't really have a name. It was just included into the bigger scene of Rio Salado. But you are right - if Castile was defeated at Rio Salado the reconquista would have taken a major blow

I use PowerPoint to generate maps and PNG files (like the boxes / cities / flags etc) and then animate them with a program called Apple Motion.

It is because more than 50% of the arabic literature, islamic studies, peoms, islamic science achievements, etc. were from Alandalus civilization, it had one of the biggest contributions to science and humanity through out the history. That's why, what is worse is what happened to civilians afterwards most of muslims and jews were excuted and the rest escaped to Morroco

Alphonso was a great warrior but a poor father and husband : not unusual in the Middle Age. So when he died his only son Pedro resented him for his behavior towards him and his mother, whom he neglected, in contrast to his behavior towards his mistress and the children he had from her. That was the origin of the long fight between Pedro I and his half - brother Enrique, that ripped Castile apart for years. I understand that Alphonso was a young man, and he grew up without the guide of his parents, but it is so frustrating that a lot of medieval kings always made the same mistake : they didn't care enough about creating a good family environment, also including their illegitimate offspring. Result : civil war once their sons became adults.

A good example is Abd Al Rahman III of the Caliphate of Cordoba - he spent a lot of time with his offspring and the succession went well, but subsequent generations didn't to the destruction of the Caliphate.

Not just italy but Europe as a whole - and parts of the Middle East, india, North Africa, and East Asia

Portugal also come to the aid of ethiopia in the 1529-1543 ethiopian empire nd adal sultanate war( the adals calls it futah al habesha) nd overturn the table rescued ethiopia from being overran, Christopher da gama lead the force that come to aid of the Christian Ethiopians he died in Ethiopia. i hope you really check this history, its similiar in some sense, rest in peace alphonso XI THE AVENGER 🙏......and what an awesome job man keep it up

Fun Fact: The famous Marrocan traveler Ibn Battuta considered joining the defenders of Gibraltar in their struggle against this Castilan siege. When the siege was lifted he went to visit Granada instead.

Flash Point History Ceuta, Tânger, El Jadida=Mazagao, Tetouan, Assila and many other were under portuguese domination starting in 1415...and in fact those places were major ports...Ceuta was at 1415 the biggest port of Morocco...

fun fact ibn battuta himself was part of a marinid army that was sent to aid granada in the seige of gibralter wheover he arrived to find that the siege had already ended due to the plague

Portugal could have sent more men. But the Castilian king, who was married to a princess of Portugal, wasn't a very good husband. And that was known to Afonso IV, King of Portugal. Only the personal intervention of the queen of Castile got the Portuguese King to send aid. She asked her father if he intended to see her disgrace and would no come to the aid of his son in law. The King of Portugal relented, but would not commit more than 1000 knights. As a way of saying "I'm here, but I really don't want to"! But apparently, 1000 portuguese knights backed by the religious orders of Calatrava and Alcantara were enough to rout the enemy's flank.

Thank you for sharing this!! By 1350 the plague had made its way through most of Europe and Alphonso XI knew it was at the siege. He did indeed ignore the advise of his people. He would go down in history as the only reigning European sovereign to die of the plague

@@FlashPointHx yeah and i had heard that by the end of reconquista a huge chunk Castilian income was dependant on war tributes from granada and morrocans so if the maranids had been defeated in the naval battle their there would have been no invasion that means no booty from the camp and the maranids would have still been intact considering maranids already had this much booty they could have easily rearmed themselves and Castile would have been bankrupt by then .So now Castile would have been fighting a new and strong army being bankrupt themselves without being able to upgrade to cannons.Castile would have been in a real tight spot then and the war would have dragged on longer .This is what i think
