Welcome to @MarcSmithveterinarian, your go-to resource for pet health advice!
Key Points Covered:
Dog's Inefficiency in Regulating Body Temperature:
- Dogs primarily cool down by panting.
- Unlike humans, dogs do not sweat, making them more prone to overheating.
Understanding Heat Stroke:
- Can occur even in mild temperatures (60-70°F).
- Causes metabolic breakdowns when a dog's body temperature gets too high.
Real-Life Example:
- Our clinic, located near a park, treats several cases of heat stroke each year.
- Many pet owners are unaware that moderate exercise in mild weather can lead to heat stroke in dogs.
Prevention Tips:
1. Monitor Exercise:
- Avoid strenuous activities during peak temperatures.
- Gradually increase the duration and intensity of outdoor play.
2. Hydration is Key:
- Always provide plenty of fresh water for your dog.
- Take regular water breaks and rest in the shade during walks or playtime.
3. Know the Signs of Heat Stroke:
- Excessive panting or drooling
- Lethargy or weakness
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Red or pale gums
- Rapid heart rate
4. Immediate Actions if Heat Stroke Occurs:
- Move your dog to a cooler environment.
- Offer small amounts of water.
- Gently wet your dog's coat with cool (not cold) water, don’t immerse in water.
- Seek veterinary care immediately.
Stay Safe:
- Be cautious and observe your dog's behavior during outdoor activities.
- Remember, prevention is the best approach to avoid the dangers of heat stroke.

We only take ours out in the early morning, make sure we have plenty of water, minimum exercise, carry rubbing alcohol and they wear cooling vests. I keep an extremely close eye on them. We do a lot of mental stimulation inside with the AC during the hot months. I do get a lot of flack from people about being overprotective. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
