Recipe For A Backyard Built Low Budget, 9 Second Drag & Drive Dodge Dart That Knocks Down 14 MPG
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The last time we saw Cody Walker he was busy exploding the Torqueflite in his wife's BIg Block Chrysler Newport. Today, we dropped by his place to check out his fantastic home brewed Drag Week special 1971 Dodge Dart.
Cody walked (pun intended) us through the cars mechanical features, including it's 700 horsepower Procharged Small Block, dragged out a box of Transmission shrapnel and introduced us to Happy The Pig.

I think low budget is a matter of perspective, not low to me

I would say a very minimum of $10k but it would not surprise me to be more than double that either depending on how and when stuff was bought. Main thing is he has spent well and things that matter so its not broke all the time.

@@mwilliamshs Yeah I hear you but, just a few years ago you could find running and driving slant 6 darts around the same year as this for under 5000 all day long. Now 5 grand MIGHT MAYBE POSSIBLY get you a dart roller (that doesn't even roll!) that needs new floor pans and everything else. Fucking bullshit.
A flat tappet cam is impressive with that setup.
This car is one of my favorites to watch when Drag Week is going on! It just screams homebuilt hot rod. And the guy has some pretty good country songs out!
I love this thing. Absolutely love it, but low buck it is not 😂

@@clembob8004 yeah and then you have people with junkyard turbo setups making similar power for like a couple thousand bucks. I understand it's relative, I just dont think low buck or cheap or budget explains this particular car ya know

Very cool Dart!!! Love that Betty crocker hood scoop...lol.😂❤
I dont think the drive train and mechanicals of this car are low budget to most of us. Those pro charger kits are not cheap. Very cool car and impressive performance, regardless.

if you hunt for years, you might find a used one sold by someone ready to move and cut a deal. otherwise, yeah, junkyards have turbos and M90 eatons that might come close with a cooling shot of "naws".

cheap for a 720whp 9 second street/strip car that is very reliable. Just put that blower on a 5.9 magnum with a cam and springs and you could probably get it down to the 9s... if you weren't worried about blowing it up lol.
My first 340 Demon Super Stock needed a scoop to clear the stacks on a Holley 650 2bbl. I just fabbed a simple box out of sheet metal. Some people called it a mailbox. It worked great, and some of the big buck cars took me lightly till I put them on the trailer! I won 2 big local events here in Ohio back in 1973 with that car. It ran 12.50s @ 114 mph. Your Dart is sweet!
Inspiring Dart. Don't go nuts...just get busy, and have fun.
That gets on my nerves when people ask. When are you going to paint it. I didn't know things had to have nice paint to be functional.
Funny to hear about Freiburger saying that: it was an older issue of Car Craft where the project car used lace curtain masking to create a striking paint job.
Nice Dart. I love the way the rear wheels and tires fit perfectly in the rear wheel arches.
Yeah low-budget is a relative term
And that folks is why they make scatter shields ..
Met the car and driver in 2017 Drag Week. Didn't run those times at the time, but now it seems to work exceptionally well. A nice, real world build up with a correct attitude, that actually does what it's supposed to.
I just picked up a 4spd 318 72 swinger for my channel and seeing this has me way more hyped up on it 😂😂 damn it!
The part that the drum fits into (with the large tabs) is called a sun shell. The sun gear and ring gear fit (well that's one system anyway) inside.
Wow, this Dart is 🤩
I had a 70 Swinger almost identical in appearance. That was until I found my 71 in a local bone yard with a NYC dealer sticker on the trunk lid with only 85,000 on the 225 Super 6 with Kelsey Hayes front discs and 5 leaf rear. The 70 suddenly became my donor car. I got 10 yrs of Northern New England daily driving out of that 71 before I sold it back to the same bone yard for a fraction of what I paid originally ($300). I love Cody's car! I love blowers! I also love his Newport and look forward to that show and not so shine! And thanks for the 727 feature! Who knew you could actually blow one up. I didn't! Well, you can blow anything up. Thanks for sharing!! 🏁
Really wanna see the Newport back on the track again!
Okay, it's not a $250k pro drag radial car. But you really can't call this low-budget. He listed every big name in the speed parts book. Awesome ride though!

@@SoI_Badguy You don't have to risk breaking shit!! Running 9's isn't all about power, it's about losing weight!! You can take a car that has 500hp into the 9's all day long, just gotta lose the weight!! That's what we did with our S10, cut weight, and now we're taking horsepower out, because I ain't putting in all the extra safety BS the tracks want for that speed to be "legal"! F that, I'll run in the 10's and be happy.
Wayer injection is a nice crutch for lack of an intercooler, plus youll have alot less carbon buildup. Win win.
What a great guy!! Humble as the day is long!! Really love his attitude!! Low buck and CHURNING THOSE TIRES!!
Mopar A Bodies Forever..
The cake pan scoop is beautiful!
Seen this one on D&D's the last couple years, always a favorite for this old dodge guy. Nice to see a profile on it, Thanks
I had a 69 Nova , with a tunnel ram intake . I didn't want the carbs exposed so I cut a 2 gallon plastic trash can in half and a few right angle brackets to hold her down . Red neck engineering at its finest .Lol.👍
That is the coolest Dart I've seen in a while. Sounds great and love the roof

I remember being at Cecil County Dragway in 1989 or 1990 and watching a guy about my age just OWN his bracket racing class. He was driving a 340 4 speed '68 or '69 Dart. Dude had his car dialed, and he was an excellent racer. His consistency throughout the changing weather conditions was amazing. Dude knew that car and he knew that track. These were Saturday trophy races. Dude went home with the trophy, and he earned it!

Great Dart! Thanks for sharing!
I’d love to build a Dart but one that’s not a major rust bucket is a small fortune. That’s without a drive train. And I’ll be damned if I’d put an LS in a Dart. An old school 383 or 440 would be my preference but a modern hemi out of a junkyard would be cool too. But doing it right under 20 or 30 grand would be an effort.

Hot Rod Mag had some discussion several months ago about how the Hemi has become a very popular engine for powering hot rods. Common and easy to find.
LOVE the floral top, looks like the old mod-top without the colors.
He didn't try to reinvent the wheel or overfinesse it. Good stuff
I wish more people knew about Tony’s magazine career….he really is every bit as knowledgeable and talented as the oft-worshiped captain flip-flop, but unlike mr. “I like women’s footwear” Tony never sold his soul to Discovery group or any other corporate overlord and that why I think he’s just about the best thing going in automotive media these days.
UTG: Best thing going on the internet. 👍
Looks like a lot of fun.
Cody’s Dart is one of my favorite cars. Similar to my 71 that had a W2 head 378 (340/3.58) and Procharger combo back in 2003-2009. Mine ran 9.70s. Only got 10mpg though. 3.91 gears with 275/60/15 and Gearvendor
Cody Walker Rules such a great guys and a heck of a singer!!
I would do ANYTHING to not run a solid flat tappet. I could possibly see not running a solid roller on a car that has to make it hundreds of miles between tracks but it seems to me a hydraulic roller would be perfect for a build like this. Am I wrong?
"Perfect cutaway view"... love it!
That Dart gives new meaning to the name Swinger!
We had a powerglide explode like that 727. It was behind a rowdy ford Cleveland in a circle track car.
Beautiful Dart
sounds amazing!
Sweet!
Thanks. I will be fixing those wagoneer floor boards before I get on my 727 I rebuilt.
Love the lace roof.
Very cool!
My last pass down a quarter mile track was at Darlington. The car club I was in rented the track and we had a shootout with the Mustang club... that was in 2005. I'd like to do Drag Week, and really want to do RMRW, but I have so much other stuff going on I will be lucky to make it to the NNN.
Awesome 👌
Cody I love the top !!! Great idea I'm going to do that to mine when I get the guts to take my top off.
That roof is badass!
I really like how that roof turned out. It was the first thing I noticed.
Love the dart my first custom paint job was 2 guys down the street had 66 chevelles and I did just the sail panels on the roof I taped it off sprayed it silver put the lace on it and then sprayed candy blue on it the first car was a big block the other was a small block my payment was 10 bucks and I got to ride in the big block car when they facedeg after that's what got me hooked on big block chevys
Seen the Dart on drag week last year at Bryon and it’s definitely a favorite especially the roof
I love this!
Now that young man rocks…his car rocks ..his home rocks …and I love the pig !
Awesome dart and it even has a spot for the dog.
excellent video, awesome car, I need to see this car go go go!
I've never seen any other transmission scatter, so repetitively, so consistently as a 727. Had a buddy years ago that put a 440-6 and a 727 in a highboy Ford 250. When it scattered, he was hanging out the driver window with near a compound fracture.
Good to see the man among his species and in his natural habitat.😆🤠😎
I love the dart.
Sweet ride!😊
Ohhhh..... a 67 Chrysler Newport 2 door. I had one of those same color except mine was a convertible. I miss that car. (She was my first....LOL)

Tony my man my friends dad worked at Trenton engine plant in Michigan had a satellite with a 440 six pack was in hotrod magazine for bracket racing working part time at ramchargers. Man Tony Detroit dragway was the place but there's still Milan dragway not far from Brooklyn speedway. I enjoy your show built a 400 with a friend from a imperial or Newport stuffed in a duster minus the slant six.I like four link but we did some configuration with the leaf springs and some fabrication with making rear shakles no wheel hop or pinion snubber.
Nice

This car isn’t legal to run 9s at any track I’ve ever run at. If this car is in the 9s it’s one of the greatest sleepers I’ve ever seen. I’m impressed to say the least. What does it weigh? I want to see a video of it running!
Much love to Poncho and Dad! =)
Close to perfect. In New Zealand (my neck of the woods) that would cost a bit, worth every cent
