Rebuilding The Fire-Breathing B58 Of Michael Essa's BMW 340i Drift Taxi

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

►When we last saw Michael Essa's BMW 340i turned Drift Taxi, it was shredding around Gridlife events with its essentially OE-spec engine. It handled all of the abuse that Essa threw at it for the season but suffered an issue while waiting for the next one, causing rod knock. To make matters worse, the failure occurred just a few days before the Taxi needed to be at an event. With little time to waste and FCP Euro HQ at his disposal, Essa decided to pull the turbocharged B58 straight-six and rebuild it better than ever.
Watch along as Michael Essa and Tyler Pappas of Tyspeed yank the engine out, strip it to bits and rebuild it stronger than ever while giving you an inside look at how BMW built another stout performer. A last-minute engine build is quintessential race car stuff; it doesn't get any more real than this.

very impressive that the B58 held out so long. there's a reason why people run PCV delete kits when they start pushing extreme powers. these engines truly are built different

@@henrik1743 When you increase the power beyond stock levels the crankcase pressure is gonna be totally different and it’s best to have a pcv delete so it vents properly to the atmosphere. The b58 has a built in pcv system and it’s not really the best

A bit late to the party here. I'd like to have a new bottom end in mine at some point and have it running around 800bhp, but streetable. I wish most places would do builds in such a fast turn around. Last engine build i had done took 7 months. Another garage had my car for 10 months and that was just to replace the gearbox!!! Absolute piss take imo. And i didn't even get the price reduced for the inconvenience! I'd love to do my own build at home but I'm lacking in confidence. The engine build I had done last time was a Volvo 2.5 which was in my mk2 focus st. What an awesome sounding engine that was!

This car uses a modified Doc Race intake manifold for an S54, with a custom flange for B58. For a direct replacement performance unit, look at the CSF intake manifold, it is a work of art!

It should not be that basic. People who watch this type of content knows already there are 3 rings on the piston and what are those rings for. I would really like to see something interesting, something new and into the depth of engines magic.

Yeah yeah, I know. IF you think about the honest reality of the situation. I was called in last minute to do this. We tore down and rebuilt this entire engine on camera in under 24 hours- definitely an uncommon request. I am not perfect- in fact the only one that is , was Jesus Christ himself. Sorry to disappoint!

So much for the BMW B58 i6 being bullet-proof....HaHa. Not a good sign for the S58 in ///M cars. Another rod bearing issue because BMW decided to make a plastic valve cover with PVC valve built-in. I'll keep my BMW E9X M3 with the S65 V8 N/A with a different rod bearing issue. New BE bearings solved that potential issue. Fingers-crossed at 192k miles.

Sorry, but from my perspective, this is not BMW's mistake. If you push twice more horsepower than stock, you have a different airflow in the crankcase, and the original PCV valve handles negative pressure from 0.6 bar of charge pressure. But not from 600 - 700 hp, and it is not surprising that the valve didn't handle this pressure. You have tons pcv valves delete kits on the market. I do not understand why They didn't use them.

As you can see, a single turbo drift taxi redlining and pushing it to the limit on track outputting 700HP+ on stock eternals. Any non built engine would give. A built EJ engine wouldn’t last half as long as stock B58 pushing the same power.
