Rebuilding CV joints - part 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Follow along while I rebuild the CV joints from my '73 Porsche 914. A lot of the assembly applies to all CV joins.

    This guy is a godsend on Rennlist forum. You can read on how to do something all day long, but nothing is better than seeing. We all appreciate Van's time and effort to do these tutorials. These are just several of the many vids he has done... This info is immeasurable in helping others.

    Wow. Great video Van! Very well done - slow, calm, organized, great camera & audio work. I've always been intimidated by CVs - had a few go bad on me on my old VWs. I'm about to get some used axles with CVs for my old Porsche, and I was hesitant in case the boots or CVs were iffy. Your video explains a lot of what I was probably doing wrong in the past and I've now no fear about tackling it! Thank you sir! You are a gentleman and a scholar (and there's not many of us left :). cheers, jt 😎

    Excellent presentation. Explanation very short & sharp. Easy to understood theory & practical. Double thumbs up to Mr. Van Svenson for your very useful info. I really enjoy watching all your videos clip. I liked your way of tutorial, slow & calm. Once again a big thank you to you to gave me some useful tips... You are Professor David Einstein of modern mechanical engineers. :-)

    I so agree with the first commenter, this is a very helpful tutorial and EVERYONE should watch it.. I was so lost when I was following my Bentley Service manual. I have a Volkswagen so not much different than a porsche. I managed to assemble it again.. Help to this video you posted. It is strange that I can't copy this.. I really do not want to sell it just want it for future refering. Must be something youtube made it that way

    Very well done. Nice video. I'm gonna do a 2003 Porsche 996 turbo front CV joint. I've done BMW joints before never a Porsche. Can't be too different, my M3 was very similar to what you showed here. Thank you for such a clear and complete demonstration, very easy to follow.

    Wow yours came apart so easily. My new boot was the same design of no tie boot as your old one which was extremely tight on the shaft and was a killer to get on and over the various lips. Also the inner race was solid on my splines......had to use heat and hammer the hell out of it to get it off those splines. This was a GKN new shaft only 4 years old. Then on reassembly the C clip wouldnt sit properly partly my fault as I had hammered the end of the shaft so hard I might have distorted the groove slightly but it went on eventually. This is a very messy job. Lots of rags gloves and towels required.

    I repair and resuse everything- car parts computers, electronics , tvs ect. BUT with CV joints it tricky. When a joint starts to click, it means the extremely tight gap groves have pitting or damage some times very small but under great pressure with small clearances, the balls jam then jump over and slide. Can you smooth this out? Well in doing so you can remove a bear fraction of metal - now the clearance is too much . Its a precise curve that fits the hardened ball. Can some manufacturers do this well? hmm Joints are so cheap now and even the whole axle with both joints, so cheaper just to buy. OEM joints last so long and cost so much because they are made of the strongest metals and exact gaps. Cheap Chinese eg joints use weaker metal and soon they start clicking. I got a GSP joint and the first KM, it was clicking but not binding. Its the same now after 10,000 kms and i will pull it off as soon as it sounds worse. I also got a rear bearing for a little corolla and in a year its still quiet but wont hold my breath. The rear bearing is under less stress than a front CV joint so all things equal the bearing with similar metal quality may last longer before grinding. After market stuff is considered about half the life of OEM but some are really good and can go a long time.

    I’ve probably watched this video 5-10 times! I have a question though, I race a 2-liter 911, how do you prevent the CV from leaking and spraying grease all over the calipers / starter?

    Excellent tutorial. I got lost when you wanted to flip the spider due to wear. I think you said you were going to move it from an inside to an outside. You later refer to a ring from the beveled washer. If this washer must be on a specific side doesn't' that give you the same wear points? That's where I am lost. Working on my cv's this week so I am loading up on info. This was by far the best one I found. Thank you!

  • @SuperMcMikey
    @SuperMcMikey11 жыл бұрын

    What do you mean by change the orientation? Are you flipping the spider gear or just keeping the joint the as is and flipping the whole axle around so the inner is now the out and vise versa?

    Flip the whole axle so the inner is now the outer. Keep the orientation of the individual pieces the same.

    You can rebuild them until there's pitting in the metal "spider" gear.

    Hey there, I really enjoyed this video along with the other partnering video. I'm rebuilding my Volkswagen engine and in the process I have made the inner cv joint (the one closest to the transmission) come disassembled.. I was really really hoping you could let me download this video so that I can watch it on my ipod and not have to get back on my computer on youtube.. It would really help out so I do not get it all moly greased up..

    I had a guy replace my axles, he said the Import Direct brand is so cheap and when he was putting them on they fell apart. I got an idea he was lying and did not not know what he was doing? Are they that cheap that they fall apart that easy. Then he said he eventually put them back together and when I got my car back and tested it on the freeway I got a weird clunking noise. The noise then went away and did not come back when I jumped on the freeway for the second time. Now I'm wondering if the guy did the job right?

    He probably did the job right, since it sounds like they're "working". But, beware the cheap parts - they tend to not last long.

    Just one thing, its a 'Bellelville' washer not bevel, named after the inventor. A bevel washer is something else completely different

  • @martinjcamp

    That's an important observation. This type of washer is actually a Spring, and is therefore much more important than your typical washer. Keeps constant tension on that part the assembly.

    Thanks for sharing this. I just finished mine last weekend. Would you believe it I had to cut 10mm off each bolt to 40mm from the original 50mm length. CV joint kits sold at Design911.co.uk and type911.co.uk don't feature the 'spacer' mount, just a pressed into shape piece of tin. My car 1984 Carrera 3.2. Job done well though so thats good for another 30 years. Vids are always better than picture frames of each stage. Great work there!

    Great vid thank you! however technically this isn't a rebuild. Rebuilding a joint would consist of honing out the races and installing oversized ball bearings .

    4:30 I would not want what looks like file shavings around the base of your vise anywhere near a ball bearing or CV joint.

    I read in the Haynes manual for the 944 and on Clark's garage that one should mark the orientation of the various parts of the CV joint before disassembly so that they can be reassembled in the original orientation; however, you didn't do this. Is this really not that important or is it special to the 944?

  • @vsvenson

    @vsvenson

    It is important to observe or mark the inside/outside orientation. However, typically the tolerance on each ball is so similar to the others that I don't think mixing up their orientation matters. But, if you feel comfortable marking everything, it certainly can't hurt!

    Your video was a great help since I accidentally forgot to mark one of my joints during my first CV rebuild today so it was nice to see someone explain the process without using any markings. Perhaps the marks just make the reassembly process easier especially for beginners. Thanks for the reply and great video.

    +Van Svenson Yep, I learned that the hard way when I did my M3 ... :( the tolerance did not allow it to go on the wrong way, has some "fun" playing with it toll I figured that out.
