Rebuild the Lucas AB14 Ignition Amplifier - SECRETS Within! - 83 Jaguar XJ6

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today we wanted to share video as we rebuilt the innards of our Lucas AB14 (DAB102, 2-wire version) Ignition Amplifier. This unit costs a high amount to buy new, but it turns out inside is a VERY common part!
Additional Data for sourcing Condenser (Lucas 1mf 54400556) and Zener Diode, and notes on resistors in 4-wire DAB106:
I found this data in my research that was very helpful - PDF attached to this Forum thread - www.mgexp.com/forum/mgb-and-g...
In that PDF that luckily credits certain people who contributed, and from "Randy Wilson" it states:
---------------------------------
"The Lucas 1.0uf capacitor is not available. Most all US cars with the 4 pin GM HEI Ignition system used a .3uf RFI (Radio Frequency interference) capacitor before 2000, later cars are using .47uf/250 volts capacitors for ignition coil RFI. You will have to modify mounting tab for installation inside amplifier, or you can just put the capacitor on Ignition coil mounting bolt. MOPAR 5149011AA Ignition Capacitor ($15), MOPAR 4606866AA, Standard RC26 or similar.
The Lucas 350-volt clamping Zener diode is not available. Although the current 4 pin module shouldn’t need extra external protection from a 350 Volt clamping diode, you can wire a 190-volt and a 160-volt clamping diode in series to achieve the desired 350-volt protection. (1N5387B, 190V, 5W ZENER DIODE) ($1.10) and a 1N5384B, 160V, 5W ZENER DIODE ($1.10) (E-Bay) Ground one end to one of the two mounting screws for the ignition module.
The Lucas AB14 4-wire units (DAB106) are the same as the 2 wire units (DAB102), except for 2 internal resistors circuits, one for the Tachometer (10K) and one for EFI triggering (6.8K)."

Note: Any links to Amazon will be through our affiliate program, so Vortex Garage may get a small commission. I will only link to items I would purchase or have used in the shop, and we'll strive to give options where possible.
Note that for parts, we can only link to the make/model we used - you'll need to validate all parts fit your application. Also you may choose to source your parts or tools from another location, perhaps at lower cost to you.

Alternative:
Pertronix D72000 Flame-Thrower HEI III 4 Pin Ignition Module (GM)

This unit is generally known as a high quality aftermarket that offers some benefits even beyond OEM. It is more expensive however.
SXL Wire - designed for higher temp exposures
14ga SXL: amzn.to/3HSAlmQ
16ga SXL: amzn.to/3uKxyIo
I did not cut any of the wires, but guess they are either 16 or 14ga. I'd err on the side of 14ga for thicker replacement wire.
If anyone comments on correct wire size I'll update this notation.
Thermal Paste:

I just ordered a module for my car. I am chasing down a rough idle issue. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to replace it to rule it out since it’s pushing 40 years old.

Hallo and thank you for the great video. I have one question: The D72000 is a multiple spark module - how does this work with the ECU? Also it has a rev limiter designed for V8 - so i guess you have to set it to 9000rpm for 6000rpm on a V12 engine

Informative topic. Thank you. One question - how do we know that we need to change the module? What would be the symptoms? Thank you :)

I would say overall driveability issues when hot, or the car stalling out, loss of ignition when hot, etc, or worst case, no spark at all even when cold. Usually I've seen these modules fail partially where they start to give out when hot but then work again when cooled down. Loss of spark either way, but manifests in driveability issues, misifres, etc.

What are the size of the bolts you removed ? 13mm?

The ones holding the unit on were 1/2" I believe. A lot of fasteners on the Jag are imperial (sae) sizes, 7/16 and 1/2 very common. 13mm would work. The ones holding the case together (small bolts) were 3/16 I believe

Whats the difference between the 2 and 4 wire versions?

  • @VortexGarage

I believe it's mainly 12cyl cars that have the 4 wire. I think it's due to a coax wire that goes back to the EFI computer for managing fuel pump and efi triggering. I may be off a bit in that but I do think thats the main difference.
