There are virtually no differences between a 125 and 150cc P-series motor, regardless of year. To be completely honest, this same video is good for a 200cc engine as well. Of course there are some differences over the 30+ year production run but a 1977 is amazingly similar to a 2007

Hi, so I have inherited a Piaggio Ape. It has a motor. Just the motor is in a bucket not the ape. (and by inherited I mean my boyfriend got it and now it is sitting in my friends garage and I am not a fan of leaving partially dismantled vehicles at peoples houses.) So there are not a lot of videos of ape rebuilds (in English anyway) but I am thinking these videos, on the vespa, will get me heading in the right direction. Course I have never restored/rebuilt any engine and boyfriend wants to pay a guy. But I do not feel like waiting for pigs to fly and I have always wanted to do a project like this. Also I am "frugal". I kinda think the ape isn't a bad place to start. Coles notes advice needed.

Like the chinese make costefficient products now the italians did the same in the last century! A scooter for the common man! Not to hard on quality! Doing a restauration on these scooters can bring up some high costs when you have to replace worn out parts! I have to say it bring back some memories of little sized engined motors I had in my younger days! Twostroke! You don't see that around very often now! Good video that showed me good tricks and the tecnical side of this little engine!

WOW, that was amazing. I have an older "Allstate", 63 large frame, that is seized up. So the obvious tips you offered like, spinning the rear wheel, twisting the shifter, or moving the crank with the kick starter, may not work for me. But that said any special advices for a seized engine?

Excellent video all round! My P150X (bought new in 1988) has only done 10,000 easy miles and EVERYTHING including engine parts is factory original without any tampering. It displayes haphazard misfire and rough running and marginal loss of power. As points timing and carb are O.K. I suspect the crankshaft seal has deteriorated over the years and does not seal properly. Your expert advice most appreciated before I tear-down to change the seal.

Pretty cool stuff. My friend I bought it from, hes a old school punkrocker...anyhow he tells me that the original owner was the President or the Vespa club of America.

In regards to the studs ends with different thread lengths at 22:50... And mentioning that the shorter threaded end goes into the crankcase... just took mine out, and they were the opposite way around (long thread in, short thread out). Would you flip em' around if you found them like that?

Hello mister, could you please explain why 2 stroke Vespas lack engine braking? I have a PX - 150 that is scary to ride down a hill because it just speeds up and over revs while in 1st gear with throttle closed. If my drum brakes ever failed, I'd be dead.

what's up guys, it's been months since I had my engine apart (p200e) 1980. I was following along with this video. it's all back together and in the bike, but, I can't seem to get the selector box to shift into 4th gear. I mean, the selector will go into the fourth notch when it's off the bike, but it won't do it when it's on the bike. I can push the plunger in by hand while moving the wheel, and I get all four gears. Could something be upside down in there? Cruciform? One of the gears? Also, the kick start, clicks when I release it, I don't remember the bike doing that before.

I got it! There's a swivel on the selector box lever that needs to fit behind the face of the shift plunger! :)

A 72 Rally 200 Electronic, im new to Italian 2 strokes however have 25yrs exp in restoration on 2 stoke bikes, cars, mopeds, dirtbikes....etc. Can you guys point me in a direction for parts? It needs new rubber, electrics, leathers, it has 4 thousand miles in the odometer, body is in great condition no rust... Thanks bros. Im from Socal but living in Wisconsin and its tough out here for a vespa owner.

***** Its a 74...my bad. Tell Robot he reminds me of a Ramone and hes the shit, thanks for all the crank and electronic tips. I just got a chance to inspect it, pretty nice for a bike thats been sitting for 10 plus years, some rubbers rotten, tore it down, cylinders looked very nice, its been soaking in Oil a couple days just to prime her for first start, cleaned fuel lines, removed oil and just ran pre mix... no lie first kick fired up.. The speedo reads 4 thousand miles and I belive it.. cables look original. I did most your preferred inspections you show on your p200 build vid, gearbox, floor boards, all the wear and tear on the grip inserts. It looked rough but underneath all the dust....im stoked.. Im from Riverside Ca btw but I mover to WI. So Cali love me brodas. Oi!

Sooo.... double nut is not a sexual position. 20:50 You guys rock, thanks for all the tips and great explanations!

nice video! but some pratcital tips could be added(check my utube channel & the FMPguides for more tips) also : there is a missing analyse: cyl head was not tight = false air as u can see at the cyl and on the head. Tip0: sandpaper the head, every head, even new ones (also cnc heads) to avoid leaking Tip1: mark the cylinderbolts so u know how far they were in, that makes it easier if tou fit them again. Tip2: there is absolutely no need to take out the cables oft he gear selector as it can stay on the scooter, u can also check it there if ist ok. tip3: use a (big or small) drilling machine (as everybody has one) for the screw nuts, just first loosen it with a ratchet, no need for a funny fastrachtettool like here. tip4: the very FIRST thing to do is to loosen the backwheel screw nut as it can be pretty f*** tight, u always do that while the scooter is still standing on the ground so you can use your weight (standing in the scooter) AND pressing the rear brake and if needed an extension for the ratchet (longer Lever = easier to open) esp if you dont have a wheel gun. (in some cases if someone used a car wheel gun u have no Change loosen it when the engine is out of the Frame) tip5: u DONT catch the needles with your hand, cause u will lose some ;o) simply use a cap of a spray or a magnet-bowl and put it under the shaft while pushing it out from the backside. Tip6: if ur scooter has 20.000km u always replace the springs in the primary, always use the 200 kit with double springs. hiya my mate has just rebuilt his p200e engine put it on the bike it starts and idels fine but it wont rev up at all and plus he has noticed possibly gear oil getting in to the piston what could be the problem ?

I don't want to sound like a smart ass but the problem is your friend should not have rebuilt his engine. THis is because when you rebuild an engine either you know what you are doing or you don't and if you don't then you are on your own. Or maybe the answer to you would be "take the engine to us sir and we'll look at it"

I love the way you guys really know what you're doing. I used to live in San Diego in the early seventies. I'm not a big fan of Vespa small wheels. . Does anyone know what scooter is every Vespa executive nightmare, as far as being a competitor?

can you rebuild or change the cluth to an automatic? I would like to purchase a retro vespa like 1965 model, but I think they are clutch operated and I would love if they wre automatic gear. thanks

Ivy ramos Not very easily. Pretty much the only thing you'd be able to do is custom fit an automatic motor from a modern scooter. It would require a lot of fabrication and engineering. The old manual shift Vespas are not that hard to drive once you get the hang of it, and the modern Vespas are a blast to drive if you can get past the updated looks. A lot of us here at our shop have both vintage and modern Vespas for this same reason...
