Reborn YF-23 Will Shock China and Russia Soon!

While some governments are practically able to conduct only guerrilla warfare, others are developing ever more powerful and effective weapons. This elite club of military superpowers is furthered by modern fifth and even sixth generation fighters. While the sixth generation aircraft have not yet passed the test of combat, let’s take another look at a promising American project from before - the Northrop / McDonnell Douglas YF-23, which may soon find itself a new life.

    @fucker1714 The US Military isn't looking to innovate things 35-40 years ahead of our time; it's more likely that they will go the YF-23 route as it would be cheaper (since it's already built), already on-par or better than the current F-22, which is over 30 years old, and they can easily improve upon old technology. Anything new that the Air Force will come out with is already better than any other country's aircraft

    @@MrShwaggins The ban on exporting the F-22 goes beyond the aircraft itself. It forbids the sharing of classified information for the ATF program in general and that includes the NG YF-23. Bringing in foreign partners would allow Japan to spread development costs, estimated to be around $40 billion, and give it access to technology it would otherwise have to develop from scratch. A number of firms including BAE Systems, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman all responded. Boeing offered an upgrade to the JASDF’s F-15 - which of course may have resulted in something similar to the Boeing F-15EX that is now entering service with the U.S. Air Force. BAE Systems similarly offered an upgraded Eurofighter Typhoon, while Lockheed Martin proposed an F-22/F-35 hybrid fighter.

    As a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force, I am very familiar with the F-23 Black Widow 2 and I was told by very good sources and being a fighter pilot I rub elbows with a lot of people in the aerospace industry, that all they have to do is bring back the F-23 just the way it is and just upgrade the software and maybe just a little tweaking here and there and they will automatically have a sixth generation fighter! Let me repeat that, they will have a 6th generation fighter! That's how far advanced the F-23 Black Widow was and can still be! Think about how easy it would be to bring it back when it's all there in front of you! The F-23 speed is still classified to this day and from what I was told, it was somewhere around Mach 2.8! The F-15 speed is Mach 2.5 + and it was never classified, so what does that tell you about the F-23s speed! It's more stealthier than the F-22, has greater range than the F-22, just as maneuverable, if not more than the F-22 and carried a little bit bigger weapons load! Japan wants the F-23 or some form of it, because of its range and stealthiness which they need to go up against China! While I'm at it, I would like to thank Boeing, Fairchild Republic and the United States Air Force for giving me the opportunity to fly some of the most magnificent aircraft in the world and two of them are the F-15 Eagle which is the greatest air superiority fighter in the world and we're all looking forward to the new F-15EX and the A-10 Thunderbolt 2 which I currently fly and it's the greatest ground attack aircraft in the world! If any of you out there are looking for a career in the military, look no further than the United States Air Force! Great people, great opportunities, great benefits and great pay! What more could you ask for! United States Air Force! From my understanding by eavesdropping on the conversation between two USAF Generals at Reagan International Airport, the USAF didn't select the YF-23 because Northrup had a very black project in the development which was the B-2 bomber, and the USAF didn't want to give Northrup both programs. Same issue with the F-20 ATF. It was ready to go for USAF flight demonstrations over 6 months before the F-16 and was the more superior fighter.

    Both Northrop's YF-23 overall performance exceeded Lockheed's YF-22 in most categories, in particular the advanced computer Flight Control Systems and Trapezoidal design. The B-2 employes similar systems, allowing the 23 to have much less RCS visible than the large engine air inlets found on the 22. Early in 1992, both YF-22's had crashed or was involved in some type of event that rendered the jets unflyable. That did not deter Georgia's Senator Sam Nunn, at the time the US Armed Services Chairman, was not going to let his state go without this project and the 22 was awarded anyway, while the 23 was mothballed.

    Thank you for an enjoyable video, my friend. In my humble opinion, I have always held the position that the YF-23 was superior to the YF-22. The American people will never fully know the degree to which the decisions regarding military contracts have been influenced by means of payoffs, perks and other offerings. I believe that one would be extremely naïve to believe that military contracts have never been effected by such influences. Some time ago I came across a report which addressed Japan’s interest in the YF-23 as the nation began its earnest search to develop their own 6th + aircraft. With the ever growing and immediate threat which China presents to the Asian countries specifically and the globe in general, one can certainly understand Japan’s desire to enact such measures and to once again pursue the buildup of Japan’s offensive military might. I am certainly looking forward to seeing the results of Japan’s military research and development. One would be foolish to ignore or underrate what Japan is capable of achieving.

    Drag decreases as flight speed increases after a certian Mach Value depending on aerodynamics... Heat reduces stealth and engine life because of turbo fans and all those turbine blades spinning with heat. The S ducts should alleiviate the air speed though making these high speeds possible. Any faster and youll need to bypass the turbines.

  • @shooter7a

    @shooter7a

    Жыл бұрын

    This is entirely correct. The DRAG COEFFICIENT decreases. Drag is (Drag Coeff x density x Area x Velocity Squared) / 2. So Drag is a function of the Coefficient times velocity squared times some constants. For actual drag to fall with increasing speed, the Coeff must drop rapidly enough to overcome velocity squared in the product. Example Data Set - Zero Lift Drag Coefficient Drag Coeff @Mach .90 = .185 Drag Coeff @Mach1.0 = .8 Drag Coeff @Mach 1.08 = 1.7 Drag Coeff @Mach 1.25 = .92 Drag Coeff @Mach 1.5 = .87 Drag Coeff @Mach 1.75 = .83 Drag Coeff @Mach 2.0 = .81 Drag Coeff @Mach 2.25 = .79 Drag Coeff @Mach 2.5 = .77 Drag Coeff @Mach 2.75 = .75 Drag Coeff @Mach 5.0 = .62 Drag Coeff @Mach 7.75 = .62 Drag Coeff @Mach 8.5 = .50 Drag Coeff @Mach 9.5 = .22 .92 x 1.25^2 = 1.44 .87*1.5^2 = 1.96 So in this range above Mach 1.25 the DRAG is actually increasing significantly because of the velocity squared rising faster than the Drag Coeff is falling. So, as you can see, the range that actual drag falls with speed is very very narrow...probably from Mach 1.08 to Mach 1.20 +/-. In that region, the drop in Coefficient is so steep that it overcomes velocity squared. Everywhere else, drag rises with speed, until you get to about Mach 7.75.

Someone at Lockheed-Martin was more clever regarding marketing and wanted to show some sizzle, so had the plane flown in excess of its demonstration requirements, wowing the Air Force generals. The YF-23 was never allowed to counter with a maximun capability demonstration of its own. Add to that the Air Force’s displeasure with Nortrup-Grumman’s management of the B1 project, the die was cast by that one demo.

    If the U.S. Airforce was smart they would push the 6th gen fighter and do an off-the-shelf part build of a modernized yf-23. Use the engines and DAS system from the f35, radar, ew suite, and landing gear from the f-15 eagle 2. Increase the size and fuel capacity to cover the larger engines and use the cock pit from the f-35 or f-15; if we built it with Japan and the UK, we could offer the F-22 s we're retiring as a stop-gap solution for them. This would take the f-22 off our books, make 2 allies stronger, and free up funds for the build that can be up and running quickly, thanks to an available design and off-the-shelf parts. With all our shortsightedness from fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan and all the trouble with the f-35, I'd rather see a SOLID gen 5.5 gen fighter than a struggling 6th gen fighter that bloats down the line.

By keeping the airframe and at the same time equipping it with today's avionics, engines and armament, we have an aircraft that, like the F-22 25 years ago, totally dominated the air to this day, will be unbeatable for the next 20-30 years. I agree ! This video has some good footage but you can't understand the yf-23 without discussing the Area-Rule. Between Mach 0.8 and Mach 1.3 is the transonic zone and wave-drag is created. The least amount of wave-drag is created with a shape like a elongated teardrop. If you sliced the plane up in sections, like balogna, the area (square inches) of each section should try to be close to equal. Where the wings are, the fuselage is wasp-waisted like the late century fighters or the F-5. The yf-23 conformed to the Area-Rule more than any other airframe. Top speed was limited to Mach 2 to preserve coatings but the acceleration to that speed must have been .... What if they made one with F-35 parts ?

    Let's take the best of both and upgrade what's left with new technology like airborne lasers from a pod or whatever and I believe that the crafts have to generate enough electricity to keep firing the laser at anything else in the air that could be coming in from the ground or another aircraft our weapons really need to engage from even further than they engage now in case we start running into other nations sixth generation aircrafts

    @@ealtar actually, the “grey ghost” variant had an equal payload. I would never count external stores on a stealth craft. It defeats the point. More importantly agility is unnecessary if you are stealthy enough to approach and kill your target before they even know a threat is present. This is where the greater range comes into play as well. Range creates options. Besides if you really do it right you kill the aircraft, airfields, and aviators on the ground. The best arguments are won before they ever occur.

    It should be noted that both YF-23 prototypes survived the flyoff. None of the YF-22 prototypes survived. I know why the YF-23 did not try to fly like the YF-22 pilots did. I don't think I should say it here though. Had nothing to do with the planes capability. It would have likely done as well with maneuverability as the '22 did if it weren't for this reason. The '23 beat the '22 to the flight line by 6 months. The USAF had to issue a formal 6 month delay in the program to give Lockheed a chance to catchup.

    It would be interesting to hear why you think the 23 pilots "did not try to fly like the YF-22 pilots did." From what I understand the flying portion was a technology demonstration to eliminate risks and to show the government the contractors could do what they claimed. It was not to 'wring' all the performance out of the prototype aircraft.
