If you think you’ve seen everything with the experimental YF-23, you’re wrong. There was one more other design…
It was to be the Navy’s 5th gen multirole aircraft.
Stealthy, maneuverable, and ready to hit that highway to the danger zone.
But it would face political opposition, technical challanges, and even lockheed trying to steal the future jet crown for a 2nd time!
Join me today on a story of the aircraft that Maverick should’ve flown in the latest Top gun - and why we never got it!
This is incredible the NATF-23.
Without spoiling the Top Gun Mavrick for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie yet, Maverick and his band of elite navy pilots fly the Super Hornets in the latest Top gun sequel.
Seriously just go watch it - it has the official found and explained stamp of approval.
And for those of you who watched it already you might be asking yourself how it could’ve been better… well I have the answer.
Air force’s ATF or Advanced tactical fighter program was launched during late 80s to create America’s first 5th gen aircraft and YF-22 and YF-23 were the main competitors with the YF-22 taking the edge and becoming what we know today as F-22 Raptor.
I have a full video on the YF-23 right here on the channel which you can watch… but there was a footnote to this story.
Northrop wasn’t going to accept the loss and went over to the Navy with a proposal that could’ve changed everything.
Navy was looking for a 5th gen aircraft for themselves to replace the aging F-14 tomcats, and what could be the spearhead for the future of the naval air force.
But requirements for the naval aircraft are different than the regular air force’s jets so YF-23 in its original form wasn’t going to do the job.
Instead, several very significant modifications were to be done to the fuselage, almost creating a completely new aircraft, barely resembling its predecessor.
By 1990 the N-ATF program was launched with you’d probably guess it, lockheed also was in on the race. They presented the F-22N, the naval version of the Raptor which would be the competition for the NATF-23.
The showdown of the future navy jet was on!

Canards were a bad move. Would have been better to keep the original YF-23 design and give those large pivoting tail fins the ability to flatten out on take off to provide extra lift. This extra vector of movement would have also given the plane even more agility and manouverability and even allow for vertical alignment like the F-15 which I believe would allow for more stability during super cruise. No need to change anything from Air force to Navy. Give me the trillion dollar contract. I'll fix it.

Honestly I feel like if the budget wasn't an issue we could have had both the F-22 and F-23 in service with one eventually becoming the main craft. The YF-22 and YF-23 had their strengths, like much better maneuverability, slightly lower costs vs slightly better range, speed, and stealth, Raptor was the better plane and better for filled the goals for the ATF, but Black Widow was very much missed... probably would have been a better interceptor due to it losing the maneuverability battle to Raptor (all though still better than everything else) it was slightly faster, could fly slightly further, and was slightly more stealthy (smaller than the Raptor's marble/bumblebee sized RCS). YF-23, or the production F-23 makes sense as a extremely high performance fighter interceptor, where F-22 would be a extremely high performance air superiority fighter, complementing each other. Just my thoughts...

9:10 - this issue wasn't so easily "fixable" as one would suggest. The rotary carrier's jammability is inherent to the rotary design. In a dedicated bomber the stresses on the rotary's system would be marginal as bombers don't really pull heavy G loads. on a fighter the stresses can be significant. If there is a malfunction on the mechanics that can scrap the whole mission. There is a reason the system hasn't been put into actual combat use.

  • @quakethedoombringer

    @quakethedoombringer

Also doesn't the rotary system inherently increase weight because of the various complex parts, which is a decisive factor when it comes aircraft. Even if it is hypothetically 100% foolproof I doubt designers would still want to put them on smaller jets

I have heard so many stories about why the YF-23 never got picked over the YF-22 for USAF service. Northrop lacked the capacity to build both the B-2 and the YF-23. Lockheed was in better financial shape. The YF-22 was determined to have better maneuverability., but the YF-23 didn't get a fair chance to demonstrate its maneuverability for the Air Force brass, because the test pilot wasn't given instructions to push the YF-23 to its limits. but the Lockheed pilot was. And finally, the Air Force leadership just plain hated the team at Northrop. I have no idea which story is true.

Theres a few reasons, alot of weird little ones to, like having to replace those rear heat tiles, and just the overall look of it. But yeah the raptor launched a missile during one of its tests, wich it wasnt asked to do, and that for some reason had alot of people hyped. The way it looked was just to alien for out brass and out current doctrine at the time, they were probably confused by it. Yeah the rear tails gave it a 60 degree aoa. The manueverability thing isnt what i heard, what i heard is they did a missile test. But they probably did show off its vectoring to. If the yf-23 pilots would of done some tricks, wich they could of the smooth underside of the 23 was ahead of its time also, it could definitly have done some impressive aoa tricks if it wanted, and launched a missile. Its a shame they didnt, but rcs data has this plane alot better than the raptor, from what they say.

@@gtd9536 It probably definitly deserves to fly again, but the iteration we saw most likely not. Because they could tweak the airframe even more now probably and those heat tiles i dont think are much of an issue anymore, im pretty sure we could replace the entire sections with a single panel nowadays instead of having to go tile by tile. Also the paint, it used the same paint the raptor used wich got phased out, the f-35 uses panels wich are going into the new raptors, they would have to make the new yf-23s with these panels. But otherwise, technology and chips have only gotten smaller, so we could fit more inside that plane then we could in the 80s, way more, we have way more accurate methods of making materials, cutting metals. Idk about selling it to other countrys, i heard japan was interested. But if they took the plans and remade the same plane now, it would be way better, tighter tolerances, stronger parts, it would dominate even more. I think the f-35 is cool, but we dont really have an interceptor, the whole point of the yf-23 was to loiter high above and move really fast, its a mach 2.0+ fighter, it would be cool to see the us release a fleet of advanced yf-23s as some type of interceptor role.

Sorry, but the Russians always copy airplanes, the Russians did not create even 1 airplane themselves. CY57 radars are capable of 0.1 reading, F18 it is 0.1... The proportions were taken from the F23 engines. The CY27 is a copy of the (American) NA 335 AIRAFT design, with the fuselage as the main wing. The CY57 is not a 5th generation aircraft, it has an engine that is a French conversion, an engine that is a son of american engine motor used in the A-10 aircraft. These engines were bought by the of Superjet passenger planes and secretly put in their CY57s, these engines do not develop supersonic speed without afterburner!!!!! There are screw heads on the fuselage that the radar can see. This is 4++++ not more.

Both NATF designs were true naval fighters in the tradition of the F-8, F-4, and F-14. It is truly a shame there is so much corruption in the DOD. would like to point out that even if we got the NATF-23, Top Gun: Maverick would've still used the two seat F/A-18 so the film camera could be placed in the cockpit. That is why TG:M never really used the F-35B, only one seat note: im writing this at the start of the vid, so if he mentions this, then oh well

Exactly. It's obvious from the production. That's why for me, the first top gun cannot be topped. It was actually a plausible situation, whereas I have to turn off my aviation brain watching Maverick

They forgot f35s have laser targeting pot. They forgot about the b2s. They forgot growler could be suppressed enemy air defences once your tomahawk have alerted enemy to your presence. They most big mistake was the tomahawk that hit enemy air base with out getting intercepted could’ve also be programmed to hit the nuclear facility. If they insist on “the gps thing” stopping them using b2s or f35, they could have also used sf to paint the target.

The Super Hornet is just an unfortunate continuation of the trend at the time of trying to make a tactical fighter into a one-size-fits-all strike platform. It led to the loss of any light bomber platform in the force with the retirement of the F-117A in the early 2000's. This is ironic because the future of warfare looks to be favoring airframes more similar to light bombers than tactical fighters. The range requirements in the Pacific in particular are very challenging for today's tactical fighters.

There is in Google, a Swedish stealth fighter designs. One a single engine version and two engine version and at first it looks like the Rafale from the front but it has the canted tails like the YF-23. I just imagine a carrier based version of this design which has three internal bays and six wing stations.
