Reborn in the USA RAAM 2019

Спорт

Race Across America is a 3000+ mile, non-stop, cycling race that starts in Oceanside California and ends in Annapolis, Maryland. In its 38 year history, less than 400 solo riders and their teams have made it to the finish line. Riders must survive the scorching heat of the Mojave and Arizona deserts and the altitude that comes with 175,000 ft of climbing over 3 mountain ranges.
Joe Barr is a 60 year old world endurance cyclist from Ireland. He has been racing bikes his whole life and is one of the few cyclists to successfully cross over from mainstream racing to endurance racing. He has won the 1450 mile, non-stop Race Around Ireland twice and numerous other World Cup events. He is a man composed of grit and no stranger to harsh terrain.
Joe and team have been to the Race Across America start line 3 times. In 2012 altitude sickness in the Colorado Rockies nearly cost him his life and he was forced to abandon the race. But Joe doesn't care much for unfinished business so he returned in 2014 to finish 2nd in his category and 10th overall.
In 2019 Joe arrived at the start line with an ambitious goal to finish in the top 5 only to find that the race had other plans.
This is an inspiring and heart wrenching watch as Joe and team have to dig deeper than ever before to try to reach the finish line of what is considered the toughest endurance cycling race in the world.
As well as capturing the 2019 RAAM experience, this documentary includes Joe's reflections 2 years later amidst plans to go return, once more, in 2022.

What this man has done at 60 inspires me at 41 to train harder and get better, that the performance and improvement I want *is* out there if I work for it. That effort, that race, that result, your achievement - astonishing. Keep it up Joe, you’re an inspiration.

Just watched this epic event Joe. Just fantastic ,your approach and the team you have really have your back. I'm one year older than you Joe and only compete in endurance rides in the UK ,I also play drums in a rock band , so how lucky are we to have been born at exactly the right time to push back barriers and show the young uns how to live life . All the best to you and " the missus" and all your amazing team. Always keep a tail wind Joe and roll them wheels forward.

Such an inspiration to this old fella, who sometimes thinks about his age and goes to a dark place. The mind says " nothing more to look forward to ". Joe then reminds me that life isn't over till it's done.

Just watched this twice over and you have inspired me to get back out ASAP. I have just got back from the RAAM with team Blesma. Day one saw us end our first shift only to find out our sleeping bus had broke a fuel line after a blowout. Handed over to our second 4 man team and 10 min later we were down to 7 riders as our captain was airlifted to hospital after breaking 4 ribs and perforating his lung. An 8 man all amputee team doomed from the word go. Problem after Problem and 7 hours between pulls as opposed to 30 min due to ferrying people from motel to motel and 2 hours ride to meet up and take over the pull meant we knew we were going to get a DNF. Saying that we cracked on and bypassed the mountain ranges and crossed the line in Maryland. Cycling with one leg took its toll and I also crashed out but like my colleagues we just made the most out of it. I was on a low after getting back home but watching your video has inspired me to get back out once my fractured collar bone has healed. I have the greatest admiration for you and your team and it has made me realise nothing is impossible even at 63. God bless you and thanks for the uplift. Kind regards John

I loved watching this level of toughness by a person that competes as much against himself as others. Some days your best may be not good enough to win. As long as it’s truly your best on that day you can be proud. You need these times to appreciate some more “successful” ones. Great job

You HAVE to stay under 200w in RAAM. Going over that you just going to pay for it with excess fatigue metabolites in such a long race. Looks like his gear ratios are not suited for the proper high cadence. @6:49 he has no power meter on his bike even. He is just pacing by feel and by the look of how dehydrated and flushed his face looks he is racing like he is in a 100mile road race hehe. He would CRUSH it if he was doing my protocols. Look how good I got Abdullah. He was not even owning cycling shorts or a proper helmet when I met him. He was riding a bike with no water bottle now holds the record for across Oz and USA in just a few short years.
