Rebel Moon: An Analysis of a Very Bad Movie

Фильм және анимация

Rebel Moon is a lot like a fine wine; doesn't matter who shills it, it still tastes bad.

Long time coming this one. Got bored with it, then it got caught in copyright limbo. Now it's out and so is the second Rebel Moon part. I haven't even watched that yet... That's going to be fun.

Jimmy says 'in myth' when talking about Princess Issa, which makes you think the princess was killed a long time ago, but Kora crashlanded on the moon after running away after helping her adopted dad kill the royal family, and she's been with the farmers for 2 seasons which should be 2 years, so...that's a short time to have a myth going around. Jimmy also says 'on the day of her coronation' is when Issa and her family were killed, but in Part 2 the royal family is killed in a furnace room on a new dreadnought. Something not adding up here.

Rebel Moon doesn't need a Director's Cut. It needs a theatrical cut where they hire a competent editor to rearrange the footage filmed for Part I and Part II into a 110 minute film. It wouldn't fix how uninspired the story is, but at least we might get a bland movie that's tolerable and somewhat entertaining. In its current form, Rebel Moon is unfit as entertainment.

This movie should come as no surprise to anyone. Zach Snyder has shown us many times that his movies LOOK good, but lack substance. Slow motion for no discernible reason. Sadly, his flair for visuals is exactly as good as his cinematographer and where he serves in this capacity himself (Army of the Dead, and Rebel Moon) the movie looks like sh*t smeared un screen (I found myself wiping my monitor several times). All of this bad 'storytelling' was evident from Suckerpunch. What this movie needs is Toshiro Mifune, but as he was in the ORIGINAL Seven Samurai, I doubt he would touch it if he was still alive.

That fight was boring because think about why the "good guys" won: they slow-motion walked down a hallway while firing and the bad guys just couldn't handle it. Nothing in any of his movies is visually interesting because none of it *means* anything. Mr "Themes are for book reports" doesn't have the first idea not only how to tell stories, but WHY we tell stories.

I didn't have high expectations going into either Rebel Moon films, but I was hoping it was more solid then a lot of the feedback it got. My impressions of the films were more or less similar. I think i am generally pretty forgiving too and would have given it more of a pass for being heavy on Star Wars and Sci-Fi tropes and inspiration if the characters or story were still interesting. I had trouble caring about the characters however, and some of the decisions of direction of the story confused me. I think the movies would have been a lot more serviceable if many things that were provided in exposition by monologs were shown or revealed over time. Like expose us to why the Imperium is bad and disliked through their actions throughout the movie, so as the movie goes on we see it for ourselves and better understand why so many characters are opposed to them. The amount of constant exposition through dialog feels like the writers either didn't trust their audience or didn't have much experience writing and didn't know how to effectively expose us to the world rather than tell us. Also when they 'show' things I feel like it's often not done well. Such as the Imperium doing evil things because they are evil - like the main antagonist in the second movie killing a technician because they didn't like that they mentioned that more tests should be ran after healing him. It was inconvenient for Noble so he just shoots him. In the second movie I actually started getting bored and felt like I might fell asleep, and that's not something I normally do with movies. When the characters are preparing for the battle or die in it I didn't feel invested enough in them to feel the tension or sadness of what happened. Being forgiving I think the movie had some interesting characters and world building potential there, but they did a poor job executing it. Better editing and decisions on how they told the story probably wouldn't have made it a great movie, but it would have been better.

Also now that I think about it, it seems like the Zach was trying to create a lot of lore at once but at the same time lost sight of the immediate story itself. As a Star Wars and Star Trek fan I really like lore and learning more about an expansive universe, but I think the lore here gets so much exposition in these movies that it takes away from the central plot. The first movie really should have been more focused. Make a great story that makes us want more lore, not a lot of lore that makes us want a great story. Also it doesn't seem like it's ever communicated well why the Imperium was so determined and desperate to get grain from this colony to the point of bleeding them dry. Maybe if they showed somehow that the Imperium was in a state of scarce resources I'd make more sense. The main motivation of the bad guys for the initial conflict seemed really underdeveloped.

    26 күн бұрын

@@RyanKarolak if i had to pin the problems of this movie down to one thing, i think it's because Zack went into it with this weird goal of forcing it to be his new forever franchise. He spends a lot of time force feeding you backstory of a universe he hopes you'll get excited for, but gives you very little reason to really give a damn The Star Wars comparisons are obvious, but also very useful. Lucas sets up the story with a few paragraphs of backstory, enough to give you an idea of what the immediate stakes are. Then that's all completely thrown to the side as the movie takes half an hour introducing you to a simply farm boy who dreams of more. He makes you care about this character in front of you and how the universe relates to him as the story moves forward. That's obviously not a ground breaking, revolutionary approach to story telling, but it works very well. You get people emotionally invested in what's happening NOW. Snyder gives us mouth pieces to monologue about shit that's either happening someplace else or happened years ago, accompanied by superficially neat visuals about a universe he frankly mostly stole from Warhammer 40K anyway, but without the satirical charm. Most of the audience does not care at this point because that's an abstraction. It's JUST neat visuals and a backstory, no emotional connection to any of it because what's happening in the now is made to feel largely irrelevant. Whether or not the Imperium gets the grain doesn't actually matter in the long term outside of the villagers, who are all backround characters who exist to dump exposition on. Zack, unfortunately, has his mind 5 movies down the line where the story arcs of all his main characters actually start reaching something like a conclusion, which he just assumes your dying to see. Unfortunately for these first two movies.... yeah, why do we actually care if these people live or die? This backwater skirmish has no real personal importance to any of them as far as we can tell.
