Just to add more context, the song was original written by Bobbie Gentry in the late 60s as a feminist statement. The story telling style is Southern Gothic. The mother has a terminal illness and she worked out a deal for the 18 year old Fancy to become an escort. Based on the first line of the Chorus people think she was forced, but the second line “if you want out, well, it’s up to you” is the option. Just like “The Night the Lights went out in Georgia”, Reba took an old hit and breathed new life into it. But sometimes it’s hard to put perspective into it based on the time it was written.

What I like about the song is the message a poor girl had to do what she had to do to survive. However she not only survived, she flourished and made it big. She went from doing what needed to be done to owning everything she dreamed of like a Georgia mansion and a New York flat. Also in the end she forgives for mother for what she had do but can now see why she did what she did to do right for her daughter.

you need to remember that this song was written in the 1960s by Bobbie Gentry. The same singer that wrote "Ode to Billy Joe"

Billy, a couple of things...this is Reba’s MOST popular song...why? It doesn’t matter where you came from; it matters how you treat people on the way up. It’s empowering! To fill out a little more of your Reba repertoire - check out “Is there Life Out There” - in THAT video her husband is played by Huey Lewis

Love your reactions Billy! You should react to Reba's video for Sunday Kind of Love. It has an old military theme to it I think you'll like and her voice is amazing on it! She also has several great live performances of Fancy you should check out. Fancy has became her signature fan favorite song that she always closes her tours with. The one from last year's CMA awards was great and Fancy from Reba Live '95 is also amazing! You'll see why she is the queen of country!

This song is sad.But her mom had to move her up town to get her out of poverty, her mom wanted fancy to have a shot at a good life and that is exactly what happened. If her mom didn't do that then fancy would have ended up on the streets because she had turned 18 and the system doesn't take in 18 year olds.A ball was happening at the governor's mansion and her mom set it up for fancy to go.Her mom said"this is your one chance Fancy, don't let me down" Fancy impressed those at the governor's mansion and that night Her life was changed forever.Fancy's mom saved her.

Billy you must understand the reality of the story is that Fancy's poor family had been left further impoverished by desertion of her dad and it only got worse once her mom got sick and the reality hit that she was dying. This left her mom with very little money and time to secure her children's future. She knew the baby would eventually have be taken by welfare and was young enough to be put into a new family so there was hope for it. Her real desperate concern was for of age Fancy who would have little to no opportunity out of her circumstances. Fancy was obviously quite beautiful and her mom knew that was her only card she had to play as her way out. It was a sad perfect storm that converged to give few options for Fancy other than to " Just be nice to the gentlemen" so they would be nice to her. Fancy's mom invested in her future by spending all of the money that was left in dolling her beautiful daughter up with the purpose of attracting the attention of men. None of this was done by the mother to benefit herself as she knew she was dying , it was only done out of love to benefit Fancy and hopefully secure her a better life. Her mother gave her the tools she needed , pointed her to where she should go and then let her grown daughter go to decide her future for herself . Fancy understood her mom's reasoning and the circumstances that really gave either of them few choices. This why she couldn't hate her mom for what she did or blame her for it as she did indeed get out and end up greatly better off.
